Can I just reply to the people who said Opeth?

Ok.

Opeth are FREAKING HUGE.
Opeth are so huge, people are actually starting to dislike them because they can't compete with their earlier stuff now... They're still pretty solid but their live performances are apparently not what they used to be because of certain new members.
I wasn't such a massive fan of the Watershed album. Still pretty good but when you compare it to say... Blackwater Park or Still Life... yeah.

Opeth is a band, if you are saying that they are not.

Lamb of God. They are fairly well known, but they are no where near as big as they should be.
I wasn't saying that. I was just saying that so people did not think I misspelled Opeth.

Where i live, Job For A Cowboy is HUGE!! I don't know if it is because i live in Southern USA but everyone who is a metalhead knows them.
Yeah that is why, because scince I live in Delaware not a lot of my friends would have heard of them.

Nightwish,
Definitely Nightwish, I'll also add Unearth, Kamelot, and Rhapsody of Fire.
Another vote for Kamelot here. They're my favorite band. Nightwish sounds good, but after seeing this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gg5_mlQOsUQ , it's hard to listen to any other Nightwish song without me breaking into uncontrollable laughter.

Dismal Euphonyabout it.

Can anyone recommend some good Gothic Metal bands, stuff like Lacuna Coil?
Sirenia and Charon come to mind. For My Pain... (those three periods are part of the name) isn't that bad either, I'd say they're a softer version of the already soft Charon.

Back on topic: I haven't heard many people talk about Sabaton, a great Power Metal band.

Almost no one knows about How Like a Winter. In the almost 15 years they exist they have only released 1 album, but that album happens to be the greatest album I've ever heard.
It holds the power to colour a hot summer day a sad grey hue. I really hope they're still together and will release at least one more album.
Try Dismal Euphony. Pretty good stuff.

TYR and Arkona are really great Pagan Metal bands. TYR being from the Farose islands off of Denmark sing about vikings and Arkona is from Russia. I'm not sure what they sing about.

*searches music collection so I can namedrop a really obscure band to show how cool and underground I am*

Ahh, nope, nothing...

Well, seeing as I've never heard them mentioned on this forum (they're not obscure I promise) I reckon I could consider them as under rated. So without futher ado, I present to you:

STRAPPING YOUNG LAD!

Check 'em out. They fucking rock.
There are a few SYL fans around here (like me), but yeah they're really underrated. Also Pain of Salvation, almost noone I know has heard of them and they are great. Pain of Salvation! Listen to them! Do it, now!

every single thread I've read on these forums pertaining to metal bands, no matter what the actual original topic was intended to be, just ends up as "these are my favorite bands!"

underrated =/= the bands you like

like 75% of the bands mentioned in this thread are very well known and liked...

this doesn't mean you have to find the most obscure band in your collection either, actually post some things you think are underrated, it's that simple. Chances are if half the other people in this thread have mentioned the band (cough Dream Theater, Opeth) they aren't generally underrated.

Don't see how this is hard to understand, but maybe it's just me.

Anyhow, on topic.

Quo Vadis (technical death, some of the best drumming I've ever heard from their now-former drummer Yanic Bercier)
Dark Lunacy (sort of melodic/doom? sounds a bit like Insomnium)
Novembre (I guess this would be doom, I find it very relaxing haha)
Made of Hate (very CoB-esque, I absolutely love the guitar solos)
Blackguard (formerly Profugus Mortis, this is kickass folk metal!)

if you're looking for metal in general... well I know an awesome Death metal band... Lamb Of God. if you don't know them then you aint into the harder end of metal...
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Death Metal? Lamb of God? Wash your mouth out with soap. While LoG sometimes gets labeled as such, I'd hardly consider their style that much aligned with traditional Death Metal like Morbid Angel and company. Influenced? Sure, but definitely not Death Metal.

Underrated in what sense? A7X have sold quite a few records, made it on a Guitar Hero tracklist, and generally partied like spoiled rockstars for the last 4 years or so. I hardly think they're underrated. Pretty talented players for the most part though.

I wouldn't say Nightwish is underated, those who have even heard of them know that they're huge in europe. Rhapsody and Kamelot definitely, but I'd like to add Hammerfall to your list along with Therion and maybe Chimaira. Although, Chimaira is about as known as Trivium and Trivium is fairly popular (at least where I live...) The last two I'll note are symphonic metal bands so they don't get nearly as much attention as the other types; they are Xandria and Epica.

(Please excuse me if I used bad punctuation.)
