Underrated in what sense? A7X have sold quite a few records, made it on a Guitar Hero tracklist, and generally partied like spoiled rockstars for the last 4 years or so. I hardly think they're underrated. Pretty talented players for the most part though.
Underrated in the sense that they're not as publicized as other bands, like Metallica and Cannibal Corpse, ever body thinks A7X is stupid and not metal but it is and they don't respect.

You actually have quite the valid point. If that's the case though, then people would only need to spout the names of really obscure artists that they need not even have listened to. At least with this method, we get slightly more known bands, but of higher quality, so we may find new favorites among them.

Back to the topic, I forgot to mention another symphonic metal band, Theatres Des Vampires.
This is true, but I'd assume that in a thread about underrated metal bands most of the people who are going to be reading or replying to this thread either listen to metal frequently, or enough that they are looking for new and interesting bands that they might not have heard of.

Now, I've youtubed and bookmarked quite a few of the bands posted so far from people who have actually stayed on topic, but overall this thread is polluted with people who apparently just see "metal" and "band" in the thread title and post the same bands page after page, just like every other similar thread like i mentioned in my last post.

Honestly, it'd be really nice for people to stop posting Blind Guardian/Dream Theater/Lamb of God/Opeth/Sonata Arctica/Kamelot (these seem to be especially high on the "this band is so great and I will post them regardless of the actual topic!" meter) and maybe actually make a worthwhile contribution...

Yes, I'm quite aware that I sound elitist about all this, I'm tired and felt like ranting a bit.
Ok sorry this got windy...

Do keep in mind that this forum is comprised of members from around the world. Even the United States has distinct regional differences wherein certain bands or subgenres are more popular or well known depending on where you live. (ex. What the hell is sludge metal?) Some of the bands mentioned as mainstream I've never heard of, so regardless of someone's opinion of their overrated/underratedness they would be new to me anyways. I do agree that some people are simply listing favourite or intentionally obscure bands, which while not a bad way to disseminate good (or bad) music to a new audience of people it is nevertheless not what the OP was about. However, underrated does not necessarily have to mean unheard of, but some examples simply do not stand i.e. Metallica. Really? This is not meant as an insult to people who genuinely enjoy them and feel they currently get a bad rap, but Metallica has been HUGE for over TWENTY YEARS. Yes they have faced criticism, and yes there are a lot of people out there who see them as having become a joke/parody/ghost of former glory/sell-outs, but I think you'd be hard pressed to say they're underrated when their latest album has sold an estimated 100 MILLION records world wide and they have sold 51,136,000 albums in the United States alone. (figures courtesy of Wikipedia if someone wants sources) It would be like me saying Iron Maiden is underrated because the idiots around here have only heard the highlights of the Number of the Beast album, or (non-metal I know) saying Pink Floyd is underrated because again around here only stoners seem to have actually listened to them while everyone else bought the tshirt cos it was neat. These bands are globally known and extremely well-regarded and while modestly successful bands can certainly be underrated there are just some groups that have moved beyond that classification.

So anyhow... *looks around*

Dethklok.

Seriously.

"But they're a made-up cartoon band. They're just a joke." or, conversely, "Omg everyone and their mom has seen Metalocalypse! That is SO last year!"

Hear me out.

Listen to the Dethalbum. It's not Jesus Christ reincarnate here to free us of our sins and make us all thin and attractive but it's a good solid metal album and has more listen and replay value then a lot of the utter screaming crap being churned out by the metal factories these days. Also, it has the balls to not only not take itself seriously but also poke fun at the metal genre overall, various specific subgenres and unrelated subjects that all often think themselves very serious and important indeed and fail to see the utter silliness that results (hell coming from a fashion background the Dethfashion episode was precious) and they do it all with a straight face. It's not perfect (hell sometimes it's not even particularly funny) but it never set out to be perfect or the final word on any one issue and for a simple premise it has developed nicely into a satire relevant and funny enough to be enjoyed by the actual fans it makes fun of. I feel, at least in my experience, that a lot of people dismiss them because they are not a "real" band. Therefore, in my experience, I feel Dethklok is underrated. Not the show (Metalocalypse) but the band itself. Feel free to disagree, I do realise I'm advocating a fictional band in a satirical cartoon, but in my defense it's quite late and I can hide behind exhaustion-induced delirium and throw bits of fruit at any earnest attackers if need be cos I just fixed a snack. ]:D
I'm gunna be honest i read only the Dethklok bit and I agree with what your saying and they have even had some big metal Names like Corpsegrinder or Cannibal Corpse and the metal community even the artists find the show generally amusing, they have Gene Hoglan play the drums on some tracks and he likes the show

Also, Dethklok's album is better than most albums released recently.

Hold on. A7X's 'City of Evil' has sold more copies than Cannibal Corpse's entire discography. Considering the number of albums Cannibal Corpse has produced that's saying something. I've seen the dudes from A7X on way more music magazine covers too. Cannibal Corpse just gets more sensational press coverage because they have songs about eating vaginal skin and stuff.

That said, they do alright for themselves outside the clogged arteries of mainstream entertainment.
Oh Meshuggah. It's like getting sandblasted in the eardrums, but they're so awesome.

Dream Theater

Too much praise IMO. Schizophrenic songwriting and albums combined with pretentious lyrics equals a big pile of technical shit.
Agreed with Dream Theater being pretentious wankery, but I enjoy most of Opeth's work (watershed was a bucket of shit IMO)

then again, mike akerfeldt is a conceited asshole..... (and he knows it)

I just have to put it right out there, I don't like 99% of metal. With that said, I love Motorhead and recently I've discovered Heaven & Hell, who are fantastic. Dig that sort of crazy-epic stuff. Are they underrated? I'm not sure.

Just thought I'd add my outsider perspective.

I've heard a lot of both bands and while I do get tired of their overlong exercises in noodling, I think they're much more successful at said wankery than a lot of other bands. Dillinger Escape Plan is super technical and complex, which I can appreciate, but I can't stand to listen to them for more than three minutes because it's so disjointed and generally just unappealing to me. Just listen to Dream Theater without the vocals, then things are better.

Opeth's best album is still Morningrise. Dream Theater's is Scenes from a Memory.

Firstly: It's silly to say "I'm the only person around here who has heard of them". I'm sure if you spoke to some other people at your school.work/university, etc, you'd find plenty of people who have heard of that band.

Opeth are no longer underrated, metal magazines seem to go gay for them ever since they signed their souls to roadrunner and became quite crap. Their new stuff is nothing compared to their older albums.

I've heard every single Opeth album, and I think Watershed is easily one of their best.

A few I did not mention earlier:

Anvil. Everyone needs to know Anvil.
Accept. There's more to them than Balls to the Wall.
Viking. Very old-school thrash, very awesome.

I'm a huge Metalocalypse fan, but I find the actual music from the show to be terribly boring and uninspired. Where's the speed? Isn't Dethklok supposed to be a death metal band? Where are the blast beats? What's with all the generic metalcore lead lines? The show nails metal culture but seems to be completely oblivious as to how metal actually sounds. Which is pretty weird, personally.

really? I only liked a few songs off the album. I felt it was a bit of a clusterfuck to be honest. the heavy/soft parts didn't really transition well in any of the songs. It was a decent album, but not what I'd expect from Opeth to be honest. I'll give them a break because half the band disbanded/is new, so they are still trying to get a feel for one another.

I'll agree with Nigh Invulnerable, Morningrise was their magnum opus, even though most people like BWP.

Hopefully, whenever they get around to it, their next album will be better.

Check out Carbomb. They're what would happen if Meshuggah and Dillinger Escape Plan had a baby and then it ate its parents and puked them out. Their music is that spew. That's right.

Only one mention for Gojira in 4 pages? Wow. Come on, people.

Also, I'd like to mention The Faceless. One of the better blast drummers out there, plus their music shreds, they should be more known.
