Stephen Tobolowsky.

Not the most conventional choice, but the guy is a seasoned character actor. Seriously, check out his IMDB credit list.

So yeah.

If nothing else, a role as a villain would appease my hunger for Tobolowsky on Dr Who.
Ned? Ned Ryerson? Bing!

That said, I think the Doctor should be convincingly - see also: actually - British. And, unfortunately, I don't know very many British actors - who weren't already Doctors or in the series - by heart (Don't feel bad, I'd hardly know any American actors at all if I didn't watch as much tv as I do...Imdb is my friend.). Realistically I just wanted to say the above line.

I thought you meant he really resigned, I was about to cry :|
I thought he had actually left once this coming series is done though?
I didn't hear anything like that, can't find anything online either.
It's hopefully just rumours, I think they should keep him for a while longer.

but let's pose this hypothesis:
Matt Smith has resigned (i know, shame)
I actually really dislike Matt Smith's doctor, so much so that I no longer watch the show. I miss Tennant :-(

I think bill bailey would make an awesome doctor.
Fuck yes!

Actually I think Simon Pegg would be quite good at it.
He already played a villain though, and I do believe he even died. A villain playing the doctor? Pffft!

OT: I do recall there being rumours of Eddie Izzard a while ago, but I don't love the idea. The guy who plays Sherlock Holmes in the recent Sherlock series would be pretty good, I think, especially if he played the characters similarly - the Doctor can be very Holmesian sometimes. Or Anthony Stewart Head, mainly because I love that man.
The movie or a tv series? Robert Downey Jr did play a good Sherlock in the movie, and he played a rather Doctor-esque Sherlock, but I think he'd be a bit hard to acquire. Iron Who? Doctor Man?

Sherlock. You know, the TV series that everyone everywhere kept raving about and saying it was the best thing on TV in years? I didn't watch it until my girlfriend talked me into it, and it turned out to be brilliant.

The movie wasn't bad either, though.

I thought one of two things from the title of this thread.

Matt Smith has resigned (I'd kill everything)
You don't like him (your opinion would be wrong!)

But if I had to cast his replacement, Cillian Murphy. Love that guy.

Really? Ok what about Nick Frost then?
Yeah, he was painted blue and he was the assistant to some alien overlord who...ran a TV network or a satellite or something. I think it was in the Eccleston era.

As for Nick Frost, he's a sidekick. He's very, very good at it, but he hasn't got the acting chops to take a leading role in my opinion. Especially not in sci-fi shows; for reference, see Hyperdrive!

Yes.
Wait...
What about Dylan Moran?
I know he's Irish, not British, and probably not suitable for the role anyway, but I just really like the idea of Bernard Black as the Doctor.
Bill Bailey would make a great companion too.
Yes... Black Books: Adventures Through Time And Space is a safe bet indeed.

Robert Pattinson. I know, I know, so sue me; but I really think he could pull it off if you added a few yeas to him.

I didn't know a new one existed. I'll have to try that out, thanks for that tip.

Oh HELL yes. I'd be all for this one!

Other than Murphy though I think I'd actually prefer an 'old' doctor again, I love the energy of the younger doctors, I just miss having a slightly off-kilter, wacky uncle. My only problem is I can't think of anyone in particular at the moment.

Stephen Fry would probably be amazing, but I just can't picture him as the Doctor. He's just so... Stephen Fry-ish to me.

Jack Black.
Think about it. ...Then realise, while I do love J.B, how terribly funny it would be. XD

Everyone I would honestly go for if I had to hire a new Doctor have been said (Pegg, Tennant back, Fry, Laurie) has been said so I'm gonna pick two who have yet to be mentioned and probably won't be.

Justin Lee Collins is one. No idea how this would work but it would be awesome to watch.
And the other is John C. McGinley. Because we all know a sarcastic, narcissist Doctor would be awesome, right? ...Right?

Well, there's one guy I'd automatically cast as the Doctor.

Sort of six foot two, good looking, white hair, tends to write a lot.
is it you, root?

Hugh Laurie I think would make a great doctor. Sticking with the UK for actors. Although I think he might get the OMG WHY IS HOUSE THE DOCTOR issue. Still he would be up to the job. He would have to stop playing house though.

AHHH House as the doctor a whole new level of being type cast.

JOHN SIMM!!!!

JOHNNNNNNNN SIMMMMMMMMMMMMM

He's British. He's awesome. He's Hunky ... and unlike the newer doctors he's not a mid 20's looking lanky git o.o

John Simm would inject a cool measure of calm and authority in the role. Laconic, restrained, and professional. He would also add a nice touch of 'darkness' to Dr. Who so you could take the show on a more science-gothic horror-y route for a change.

(Edit:) Damnit >.< I just noticed he's already been in the newer shows ;.;

Fine >.<

if I can't have John Simm I want Richard Albrecht.
