okay so since it's revamp we've seen Christopher Eccleston do a fine job of reviving everybody's favourite Timelord, Doctor who (incidentally i've always though it should be 'Doctor Whom' but that's just me being a grammar nazi)

after a measly one series we were gifted with the brilliant David Tennant who became so popular he was heralded the new Tom Baker
though i expect we'd all have a hard time deciding between the two, Tom might just clinch it

and despite the enormous success of Tennant or 'Ten-inch' as he has been called
Matt Smith still managed to keep the doctor fresh and interesting

but let's pose this hypothesis:
Matt Smith has resigned (i know, shame)
and you are in charge of casting the new doctor
who do you pick and why?
reasons are oh so important remember

EDIT: oh and i'm sure something like this has been done before, it just seems obvious
but i couldn't find any

I thought you meant he really resigned, I was about to cry :|

I don't know who I'd cast. Stephen Fry probably, that'd be hilarious.

I thought he had actually left once this coming series is done though?

Well, there's one guy I'd automatically cast as the Doctor.

Sort of six foot two, good looking, white hair, tends to write a lot.

Why? Apart from being one funny, if rather deadpan, guy, I think he's got it going for him. He's charming, dresses really interesting, is rather reserved and alot more focused on technology in comparison to his Top Gear co-hosts. I would like to see a little more mad scientist in my Doctor. The only thing that stops me? He doesn't run on camera.

Actually I think Simon Pegg would be quite good at it.

Jack Davenport, funny, excellant actor and he's worked for Stephen Moffat before
Oooh... I really like your thinking. Jack Davenport seems like a genuinely lovely guy. I'd love to see him as the Doctor. I was never really a fan of Matt Smith. He never reached the highs of the 10th.

P.S. Is your username anything to do with Shannara by any chance?

I actually really dislike Matt Smith's doctor, so much so that I no longer watch the show. I miss Tennant :-(

He already played a villain though, and I do believe he even died. A villain playing the doctor? Pffft!

OT: I do recall there being rumours of Eddie Izzard a while ago, but I don't love the idea. The guy who plays Sherlock Holmes in the recent Sherlock series would be pretty good, I think, especially if he played the characters similarly - the Doctor can be very Holmesian sometimes. Or Anthony Stewart Head, mainly because I love that man.

A woman!

Just so I could watch the shit storm caused on Gallifrey Base. (Although keeping that in mind, I can't think of any good reason why the Doc couldn't get a sex swap)

Therefore:
Hugh Laurie
Stephen Fry
Benedict Cumbernatch (well, he was good in Sherlock)
Keeley Hawes
Helen Mirren (again, great in Silent Witness)

I can't think of anyone else right now, my minds completely blank.

Although in all seriousness, I should totally be no.12.
