So it's 1999 and having recieved my brand spanking new Game Boy Color and Pokemon Blue I immediately set upon playing it. It wasn't long before i was completely addicted and became part of the Pokemon craze. 151 interesting creatures and Pokemon was in my opinion at it's best.

But today with the new Pearl and Diamond I feel disheartened to see the franchise seemingly ruined by all these new Pokemon of which i have no idea about, although i did play up until Pokemon Emerald. My willingness to keep up with it all has now died away.

The point i'm trying to make is that the younger generation today will never know how good it was or how important when there were just the old 151. But what do you all think? Are these new generations a good thing? Or should we stop it before they completely destroy the franchise?

Now i feel really old.

EDIT: I did enjoy Pokemon Silver

I've played every single game. My favourite were the old 251 in Gold.

Some of the new ones are cool, though. I'm specially fond of Empoleon. Woo.

I have played all of the older pokemon games, and ended after finishing FR/LG.
I saw a newer game some time ago, and atm they are inventing new pokemon without any creativity at all, just to be able to make new games and to make more money.
I like the old games, blue most of all as they are nostalgic and were very nice when they were just released. I've played blue over and over again, but I doubt that the younger generation will know about the first pokemon there were, and how epic the first games were.

My opinion: if anyone wants to play a new pokemon game, they first have to proof that they have played the older games. That way everyone will know how great they were, and that they may never be forgotten.

God damn it. I'm 18 and I'm sick of having to defend to new generation's greatness. The original 151 are tainted by feelings of nostalgia. The new games are just as good, each game improving on the basics in new ways. The gameplay keeps getting deeper and deeper, with more layers of strategy ever game, while at the same time containing the playability of being able to beat the story using your favorite. Everyone I know pretty much just used a Zapdos and Mewtwo in the original, but now they can make nearly any pokemon serve a purpose. Just look at the way each pokemon gets a page: http://www.smogon.com/dp/pokemon/

And G/S/C was my favorite, with R/B/Y being my least favorite.

151 were fine enough for me. I don't get the dudes in the new ones (or the television/film series)...

I think that it's just the nostalgia of the first game. I have kept up with the series for several reasons, including the fact that it serves as a better time-sink than MMO's, so I know where you are coming from.

The first generation of Pokemon was new and cool, but they just kept adding more. I actually did get all 150 (and used a Gameshark for Mew), and that was a really exciting day for me. The value of the newer games depends on just how much you like the additions and how many people you can compete with because it really is meant to be a multiplayer game.

If you have people that you can battle then it becomes less of a matter of grinding and you can actually explore various battling strategies as opposed to simply matching types. The other kind of people who like it are the collection freaks (me) who need to get all the stuff in the game to enjoy the single player. Other than these two kinds of people though, the game is cool when it's new, but just a rehash for each new generation.

It's sort of like FF: Crystal Chronicles, awesome with other people, but otherwise is a serviceable game while not being extraordinary.

I've played Gold, Silver, Ruby, Sapphire, Diamond and Pearl. But I've only completed Gold and Ruby. I agree though now there are just too many Pokémon to keep track of, and they keep adding ones and removing them which seems pointless.

I'll admit it. I own Pokemon Pearl. It makes me feel like im nine again and playing red version. I do enjoy some of the new pokemon like Magnezone, but for every cool one there are two stupid ones like bidoof. If the start to go quality over quanity I will support the franchise.

Also, it is the show that has degraded so much in quality that it is now what I believe to be the absolute worst show in existence. I'd rather play the E.T. game than watch that...and every generation of pokemon had its "Bidoof".

I would have a problem with all the dumb new pokemon if it weren't for a fantastic creation called "Spoink".
Best. Pokemon. Evar.

You mean "Baidoof"?

Also, the worst has to be the new ledgendaries.

If they're so rare, why are there fourteen new ones in D/P/Pt?

The games per ce is improved there is no question about that, the first ones is liked only because of nostalgia, and even though i haven't finished any game since the r/b/y generation i have tried them and seen a lot of strategic upgrades.

BUT...

The franchise however is... excuse my vocabulary, raped by a greedy billiondollar company.
The first 151 were strategically enough to build a balance and 251 created a bigger diversity but srsly are they over like what? 1000 now?

Now they're just massproduced, and it hurts the 8 year old in me who went to the game store and bought the awesome looking game with a red cartridge and a cool red dragon on it, to see it.
(Yet somehow i played Squirtle on the first go... weird :S)

In america its changed to Bidoof for some reason. Also agree with the statement about legendaries.

P.S. Snorlaxes are the best. They have been my favorite since Red version.

They're not all really "legendaries". Just one-of-a-kind. Now, you wanna know a true legendary? A pokemon that's one of a kind and able to be effectively used in-game with little or no knowledge of the games deeper mechanics. In other words, the stuff little kids are likely to use.

No, I just say "Bidoof" in a Texan accent.

I have to agree with the majority in that G/S was the best generation (that I played). It was a franchise at it's top refining almost every bit of it's predecessor. R/S seemed to either not advance as much or even taking a few steps backwards (removing a few of the Pokémon and both old regions).

That said, I don't have anything against the new ones although I haven't played them. As long as a new generation (or slightly younger kids in this case) gets to experience the same joy out of something as we did, even though to us -90s "vets" (god I feel ridiculous saying that) maybe don't think they're as good.
