Ugh.

The dashboard - especially the themed ones - look great. But the Xiis? Really, MS. If you make them less Mii-ish and more toward a realistic feel, then I'd be all for them.

Don't take me wrong, I'm not one of those angsty 13 year olds who lock into fetal position if they are seen playing a cartoony game. But wouldn't it make sense if the style and feel of your console interface stays true to the vibe of the majority of your games? So instead of forcing these bubbly monstrosities on us as we wait for our Gears 2 and Fallout 3 to load, give us something that looks more like a person.

What I do like with the Xiis is the idea to take clothing and equipment from the games you play. *That* is a fantastic idea, and instead of making it a small bonus, center the idea around it.

These things have huge potential to expand the gamer picture idea. You could make yourself into a tribute to your favourite games, and show just how good you are with the stuff you're wearing. Don't give us these Xiis, MS, because if people want the Wii experience, they'd buy it. It's cheaper anyways.

I'm also hopping that the in-game 360 menu remains a blade, but that's just a preference.
I think that one of the reasons they're changing it is so they can make everything available without having to quit the game. You'd hit the guide button, the game would get darker (like it does now), and the whole dash would pop up on top over the game.

It would certainly make changing music playlists or sending PM's work a lot better.

Wow, these themed dashboards actually look awesome.
I am currently sporting the same Gears of War theme on my dash, and the new implementation looks WAY better!

EDIT:
Look at this leaked picture from some time ago,

Notice the boxer, bunny suit, Incredibles outfit, samurai and tuxedo's.

Seems like there will be a lot more to customise with, perhaps by completing certain games.

I honestly started laughing my ass off when I saw the demonstration during the Microsoft press conference or whatever it was.
It looks like the developers hired their children to design a new "interface" for the 360, the only thing I liked about it was the fact that they announced that it would be "more accessible" and would have most if not everything at your fingertips.

Just my 2 cents

I only have two words to say to the new dashboard: "Hate It."

Nuff said, I'm freaking glad I don't bother with XBox Live because if your XBox automatically downloads this crap I'm throwing it through a Window at our local Microsoft Office.

Love the new interface, more so after those Major Nelson shots. The Halo one is quite cool.

There will still be gamerpics, dont worry. I don't see them ditching that if you want to keep it. There will prob be just another option level... friend pic, gamer pic, avatar. So stop whining, ok?

One reason I'm happy about the Avatars is that I want some cool accessory to be 50MS points so I can GET RID OF THOSE POINTS JUST DANGLING THERE... TAUNTING ME!

They are clearly just trying to yank the Xbox firmly out of the sweaty, unscently undies of greater malehood and into the domain of ....... girls. It's all about the "cute factor" lads so just grin and bear it for the sake of humanity.

So Major Nelson posted some screenshots [http://www.flickr.com/photos/majornelson/sets/72157606205914939/] of 'themed' dashboards.

I think these are a much better style for themes than what they have on the current interface.

That actually ain't so bad. I could get used to it.

Thought I'd resurrect this thread as a retrospective, since we've all had to live with the new dashboard for a few months now.

How are people coping with it? Do you think it's an overall improvement?

To start the ball rolling.. I think it's harder to navigate to things I commonly want to use (e.g. the 'my games' menu, since for some stupid reason you need to go there to play installed games), and I still don't like the retarded avatars, but the game/film preview strips look cool.

i think that it could be improved in some areas, for instance, put the Active downloads access in the marketplace channels, and an "add points button" as well, instead of hiding it on the downloads' page.

i hate the standard appearance on the NXE, but i have the Fable NXE theme, so it's made bareable, but overall i like it. i still don't see the point of Avatars though, they're just a rip-off of Miis, but at least they have real clothes. although even mii's can be used in some games, avatars currently have no purpose

The NXE is uglier and slower than the old dashboard. I didn't need the Xiis either. If it had been a choice, I definitely would have stuck with the old layout. Unfortunately we did not get to choose.

It is an improvement the old blades were ugly i think things are easier to find now. Also you do not have to go to my games to play installed games you just have to put them in and start it like any other game. it spins for a second and then plays it from the hard drive

The NXE has more information readily available once you navigate to a games' page however, the navigation is the problem.

I prefer the overlook of the new dashboard yet it does have a bit too much going on. I find it difficult to navigate to the areas I want and some of the tabs seem thoroughly redundant. I have particular difficulty trying to find my Arcade games, mind you I'm not buying them any more, offline games where you have to be online to play are ridiculous.

Me? I like it. The Xii's are a cool little addon, but if needs be you could always just set it to boot straight to game so you don't have to look at it and/or whine about it.

I like the dashboard, actually. It's easier to find stuff with this one than the blades were, and it's nice to have a visual representation of your friends in their parties instead of just a list of names with pictures you can barely see.

The biggest improvement for me was being able to check on download status without having to quit your game completely and return to the dashboard. Yes, I'm a simple man to please, but that was kind of a pain before.
