The title states it clearly to what we are going to gab about. The lose your powers mission/chapter. Do you hate it or love it? Personally I detest it as it always feels like a stall tactic for a challenge but we aren't here to talk about my whining. I want your thoughts and opinions.

Also, my brain is a bit hazy this evening as I can only think of Prototype as an example of having this gimmick. *still loves the game though*

So, my fine friends, what are your thoughts and names of games with this gimmick?

I quite liked that part of Prototype actually. It made me appreciate the basic punching and kicking style more than I lost them (When I had mostly been using claws/whip) which in turn made me realise how freaking awesome the musclemass power can be.

And personally? I'm fine with it. Bioshock did it well where they varied your powers and even gave you some that you might not have had before. I thought it worked quite well.

Sometimes they're okay. Most times not though. If a key point to the story required it to happen to push the narrative, them I'm all for it. Usually, it's just like you said, a stall tactic, or just a way to tack on an extra hour to the play time.

X-Men Origins Wolverine did this, and it felt like a cheap way to throw in some environmental puzzles.

Whatever, just wash your hands.
in prototype at least it made sense, since the gov would totaly do something to eff with your powers, in assassins creed.... well it was mostly there to give you a bit of play with all your stuff then give you things to collect and over all Id say it worked.
But then again I love metroid and legend of zelda games and you never keep your powers between thoes games so whatever

ohhh ho hohohoho....... metroid..............
at the begining of every game you lose all your previous powers.
i know its the start of a new game but, i hate backtracking!!!
though on metroid zero mission you lose all your powers and are reduced to zero suite samus toword the end of the game

I wanted to punch the elderly when I got hit with it in Prototype. I was already using all of the powers... I did like the reward I got and it didn't last long if you were quick with the missions.

So far, Bioshock, God of War, and Assassin's Creed though in Assassin's Creed's defense, it made sense because it was at the beginning and thus you really didn't lose anything but a preview of what was to come.

This happens in some form in every game in the Metroid series. There is also a quest in Guild Wars: Nightfall where you drink an "elixer of strength" with prevents you from attacking and using any type of skill.

yeah, prototype, those few missions force you to run, it gets really annoying and the game had the nerve to time me on my mission, HALF AN HOUR to complete one mission, all because the only thing I had was my fists, which swiftly become useless at that point during the game.

The "lose all of your items/weapons etc." is a popular variation on this theme that probably qualifies a lot more games for this, and is completely based around the same concept.
Think at least one level in each Thief game.
Or nearly every FPS with a storyline.

I always hate those. The only game that ever did it right was Panzer Dragoon Orta when the dragon was critically injured and for 85% percent of the level the dragon was running on the ground

That game was one of my all time favorites

it's more interesting in a story like a novel or a film, but incorporating it into gameplay is lame and feels like all your efforts were wasted, even if you are without them for just a short while

The really long "break your mom out of prison" level in Fable I did this. In this instance, I think they pulled it off well. It's probably one of my favorite quests in that game.

In Fable II this happens when you go to the Spire. And in all honesty, it's really the only time I ever came close to dying in the game; a fact which speaks volumes about its lack of overall difficulty -.-

Now that I think about it, it also happens in the Pitt in Fallout 3. This would have been more of an actual challenge had there not been like 30 stimpacks lying around the area.

I hated the Spire, if only because my beautiful, busty Pirate-Mage ended up bald.

Generally they annoy me if they're in the middle of the game, progresswise (i.e. halfway, two thirds of the way, etc). Assassin's Creed didn't bother me when it did it, since you got to do one mission and then lost them. A short mission at that, very short.

Gears of War 2 "boss" battle, but ofcourse, you only really need the lancer anyways, if u didnt have it u'd be screwed

Half-Life 2 the chamber thing that vaporizes all of your standard weapons (but then again, the super Gravity Gun is better than all of those other ones anyways)

assassins creed had to be the most annoying cause you lost things like how to grab onto a ledges in mid air what did they do something to his brain. seriousy. and god of war 2 was bad for it imagine what will happen in god of war 3. He'll probably die again for the third time
