I am currently working on a anime/manga project and would like to get some feedback. What would you as the viewer like to see in an anime for you to think its perfect, or near as possible.

For example: At the end the hero get really rich and famous, or has a really cool sword, etc

What archtypes and stereotypical elements would you keep, get rid of, what change is needed?

Guy stumbles on a gun of the future, an unlimited ammo fully automatic rifle.

Have him yell Leeroy Jenkins, and run forward for 30 episodes shooting people.

*edit
I mean for this to be in like the 13th century or some crap. Before guns howabout that.

Don't make anime stereotypes and integral part of the story. Its okay to have nods and references, but doing away with stereotypes is the first thing to do if you want your project to stand out.

That sounds highly entertaining actually

Everyone's demands are probably going to be extremely specific. Myself, for example, has always wanted to see an anime where the protagonist is practically non-existant to the rest of the world, and walks in a seperate kind of dimension, while still being on earth, in a place where nobody else can see him. Also, people may be pretty vague, like in my example, I don't know what the disequilibrium would be, I just have a concept.

For starters though, I'd probably try and avoid all of the erotic things in regards anime and manga, and if you have a love-interest, make her have personality, not some Silent Bob or a girl who is groped every five minutes by every passing antagonist.

EDIT: If you're having some form of magical elements, don't have 30ft wide power blasts and such. I like animes where people use guns, and people bleed, not get scorched by a Kamehameha.

This ( http://www.hulu.com/le-chevalier-deon )is seriously the only anime that makes me not want to spoon my brains into a toilet. I am hardcore anti-anime, but more stuff like that would certainly grab my attention.

I guess that means I'm looking for stuff in interesting settings that aren't pandering to the anime stereotypes with a strong narrative and absolute lack of the bursty, tentacley, rapey, hypter-violent, giant hair, big glove tropes I usually associate with anime.

Thats exactly what I was thinking. My female lead will be a badass babe almost on the level of the hero in terms of fighting skill(if not physically) she might even save the hero more than once. and I'll have female soliders along side male ones

What about mixing mystical martial arts powers with guns and swords in a futuristic setting?

Make a character turn themselves into a multistage rocket which flies up into space with their body parts containing the fuel. Whenever a body part runs out of fuel it's dropped like a space rocket. At the end with only the head remaining it explodes in a nuclear blasts scorching the moon with the image of the character's face forever.

On a more serious note: I got nothin'.

Well, since I'm assuming this will be geared to a western audience, I request an "actual" ending. I've not really researched this, other than by watching some anime, but it's rare that a series has a satisfying end for me. I can understand leaving it open to interpretation, or it might be a cultural thing?

The Word 'Perfect' is completely subjective so you won't really get the perfect anime. Also, if you'll make a story, say "Fuck it" to any establish trope, and make your own.

In my opinion though, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya.

So many times in anime I see a bad character explaining how his/her power works to a good character in the middle of a fight. Never ever include that.

That's if you are writing a Dragonball/Naruto/Bleach type anime though.

My favorite anime is Ghost in the shell (the 2 series)it isnt perfect but i love it.

But on topic; Get rid of things/avoid in an anime? A bit of a rant on my part too.

Take the "grand list of RPG game cliches" as a list of things to avoid if possible.

Avoid Mary Sues/ GAry Sues

Avoid Gratuitious boobies and butts, seriously.

Mechas, avoid all of them if they are expected to be central to the story.

Underage primary character with god-like powers and skills... when it doesnt make sense.

While characters need to be flawed to be interesting, stay away from dysfunctionnal emos. Especially when they are expected to save the world.

Ridiculous, unpratical hairstyles. YOu can characterize a charater with some other trait than anti-gravity hairs.

Avoid Idiocy/stupidity in all characters, they can make mistakes, but not obviously stupid ones.

super-power-that-take-ages-to-activate

Villains who gloat, and monologue.. and the hero stop and listen (and him and his allies trust every word for some pointless internal tension and mistrust when the true ennemy is right in font of them..) The hero and his allies should just shoot the bad guy and talk about it after the battle is over, or just shoot him and take his words as complete lies.

Allies who betray you for stupid reasons.

Stupid villians. No respect for them.

Stupid villians. Seriously, make them really smart and ressourcefull.

Bad guys who cant aim and cant use tactics. Make the average trained bad guys at least appear reasonably competent and alert.

Stupid villians with superpowers for an explosive finale. (IMHO; i prefer the conniving political masterminds that outsmart you at every turn, but isnt that great in that final fight, his trusted generals/warmasters are the ones who are good at battle)

Imcompetent NPCs (aka redshirts) that get killed in masses by the bad guy (just to show how EEEeeeevil he is) and cant get things done. Its not a crime to take the spotlight away from the hero from time to time.

The lone ninja rule; avoid when it makes sense.

Anciant artifacts and lost tech and whatever made by the ancients should (if it make sense) NOT be the best thing out there, maybe the current techniques are more refined so the old stuff is brittle, heavy, primitive (but valuable to collectors and museums) in comparison.

Did i mention to avoid stupid villians?

I like explosions. Because I'm a simple man and so are a lot of people. I do however hate explosions that don't make any sense or aren't realistic. That is in fact a pet peeve of mine.

I actually don't want to hear the author's viewpoints on things in the story nor do I want to hear or see the characters reacting on the author's whims... I want them to act on their own. I want them to be breathing, living and not breaking character. Don't make the saint suddenly go on a killing spree for no apparent reason... if it happens I want it to be revealed no more than a season later and I want it to add up. Not just because, not to be a plot mover... if this scene happens show why.

Don't get preachy, I hate shows that get preachy about something that shouldn't even freaking matter. If you're hunting a demon I don't want to hear about Global Warming. Maybe make a crack that it's the demon's fault, but don't go off on a tangent about it.

There's probably more, but I've been up for some twenty four hours and can't think of any.

seriously I agree with a lot of this, lame crap needs to get 10ft pole marks all over it

don't be afraid to kill heroes (not talking about "redshirts"), show that they ARE mortal, and CAN die so that when it gets close, it's not a matter of what trick will the hero pull out of his tailpipe to win, but will they win and at what cost?

Make the villain, who was exiled and shunned for his bushy eye brows, want to burn the eye brows of all humans.
Preferably with the help of his nostrils.
