Acolyte watched in silence as Nikolai made the leader of the pirates even uglier than he already was, and then talk to this Christa woman.

Acolyte had never seen Nikolai afraid, but he looked close to it, now. If it was not fear, then the man at least looked profoundly disturbed.

"It would seem the debts we owe you are already piling up. Also, as I understand it, you are looking for somewhere to stay? Well, if you could bring yourself to leave all of those weapons behind, we should have room for all of you. Life may be simple here, but it is also more comfortable than I expect you're used to. Rest assured, staying here places no obligation on you unless you wish it to. We are the ones in your debt, and to me, that makes you honoured guests for some time yet."

Nikolai hesitated here. He turned and looked to the group, looking quite unsure. Acolyte wasn't surprised. He didn't think there had ever been a time when he had seen the big guy not bristling with weapons. But he was also aware of the fact that most of the Free Men, himself and Nikolai in particular, could do just fine without weapons when push came to shove.

Stepping forward to break the silence, he said, "I don't know about everyone else, but I'm fine with that." Removing the clip from his pistol and working the slide to eject the last remaining bullet, he held the unloaded gun at his side. "Is there somewhere you'd keep them, or should we find somewhere else to hide our weapons until we want to leave?"

"... once our business here is concluded, what they will have been made privy to is a loose end I'd rather not leave hanging."

Nahla grinned. "I don't know why I ever doubted you," she told Talon. Looking in Huresh's direction, the rebel shrugged. "Still, it would've been more fun to light these fuckers up. It's been way too long since I've exercised my trigger finger." She laughed. "I hope you have some use for it in the near future."

"It would seem the debts we owe you are already piling up. Also, as I understand it, you are looking for somewhere to stay? Lucia was right there alongside the woman until the part about leaving their weapons behind. A condescending, almost disappointed grin spread across her face. Leave her weapons behind in a place like this? Was this woman crazy?!

That was asking for death.

Then Nikolai turned to look at the group. There was something... unsure in the way he looked at his men. Was he seriously considering their offer? There was no way. Nikolai was the most pragmatic man she'd ever met. What this woman was asking was... it was asinine!

"I don't know about everyone else, but I'm fine with that."

"What?" Lucia blurted. She found herself staring in awe at the monk. Acolyte too?! Had they all forgotten the hell they'd been through to get where they were? Could they not see that this was not the end of their journey? They weren't safe yet, not truly.

She looked around at the other Freemen. Was this really happening?

Scowling, Lucia stepped forward and stood between Nikolai and Acolyte. Her gaze was set on Christa. "Are you fucking kidding me?" she asked bluntly. "Those assholes only left your merry band of civilians alone because we showed up with guns. What's going to happen the next time a group like that comes around? I'm sorry, but I'm not so stupid that I'd needlessly risk my life on some meaningless sentiment. I'm keeping my gun." She ignored Acolyte completely and looked only to Nikolai. "You can't seriously be considering this."

"And if we don't leave, the fuck you gonna do?" the inmate in charge of a small group was asking, grinning at them insolently. Korovitch couldn't believe the man's idiocy. It was like he didn't fucking see the guns they were carrying. He was about to respond when one of the inmates at the back of the crowd piped up, "hey, doesn't that asshole look familiar to you guys?"

"Hey yeah, ain't that that psycho Russian warden?"

"Korovitch is here?"

"That asshole broke both of Stevie's arms!"

Korovitch rolled his eyes as he and Fiona raised their rifles in unison. They were supposed to be clearing these scumbags out, and yet here they were, getting ready to throw themselves on his sword.

A man separated from the group, charging at him with a lead pipe, screaming like an Apache. Korovitch swung his rifle, catching his attacker in the jaw with the stock so hard that it sounded like he'd slammed a baseball out of the park. The inmate fell sprawling, with trickles of blood and shards of teeth beginning to ooze out of his mouth. Slinging his rifle over his back, Korovitch advanced on the onlooking crowd, glaring. As he walked forward, he trod on the face of the man he'd just concussed, punctuating his footsteps with a grisly crunch as the inmate's nose broke under his boot. A couple of the men recoiled, shrinking back as far as the inmates behind them would allow.

"Listen to me, you insolent little shits," he said in a low voice that still carried in the silence. "You might not realize it, but I'm trying to help you here. I'm trying to save your lives. But honestly? You worthless fucks are the worst humanity has to offer. You fucking murdered my squad, and yet here I am saving you. But if you won't go... you won't even have to wait around. You'll be in hell long before you have to deal with what's coming."

The crowd watched in stunned silence.

"MOVE!" he bellowed right into the face of the nearest man. As one, the inmates scattered.

"Still got it, huh boss?" came a voice from the shadows. Three men stood cast in darkness. Up until now, they'd been hidden by the press of inmates. The voice was familiar.

"Tanner?"

"Sir."

"Come out where I can see you," said Korovitch. His heart was racing.

Three men stepped into the dim light. Tanner, Hayes and Wickers. It was incredible. Providential, even, that somehow his three most loyal soldiers had survived the sky falling in on their heads. They looked like hammered shit, though. Sleep deprived, battered, bruised and scarred. He noted immediately the angular black patch on Wickers' left eye, and his complete absence of sleeves.

Korovitch was about to speak when suddenly Fiona bolted past him. "Oh god, James!" she yelled, running into Tanner's arms. He swept her up in a fierce embrace and buried his face in her hair. The other three men collectively looked away. Korovitch wasn't sure when that had happened.

When finally the couple apparent separated, Wickers asked, "so just how the sweet and salty shit did ya survive, sir? I dinnae how it's possible!"

"Me neither," replied Korovitch. "I just remember waking up at the bottom of a pile of corpses."

"Is there anybody else?" asked Hayes.

"Yes," said Korovitch. "But... we are the last of Iron Squad. Anyone who didn't die in combat was executed. Fiona was the only one I managed to save."

"We know, sir. Word travels fast."

There was a solemn silence. Eventually Korovitch broke it. "We need to be moving. We'll regroup with the others at a safe location."

"So what are you even doing here, sir?"

"Clearing out inmates so they don't get suffocated or blown up when the others take out the pipelines."

"Why are you taking out the pipelines?" asked Tanner.

"Long story," said Fiona, flashing him a smile.

"Wait, so why'd they give you this job?" asked Hayes.

"What do you mean?"

"I mean like... oh, we need to evacuate these assholes. Let's send the most widely recognized and universally despised guy we have to talk 'em down."

Fiona laughed. "Well when you say it like that!"

"Stow the chatter," said Korovitch. "I want us at that rendezvous five minutes ago."

Rubble and dust was let loose from the ceiling as he explosions rocked above them. Lewis was just about done counting how many rounds he had and how much food he was carrying. Aggie made sure they had all the medical supplies she could carry before the blasts rumbled through the facility like an earthquake. Both of them had remained silent but strengthened in their resolve to get the hell out of there. Aggie felt an odd sense of glee rise from cold exterior as she heard the explosions go off. There was something about the blasts that made her feel alive again, like she was rejuvenated by a sudden surge of a new power. Lewis might have called it hope.

"Let's kick things off, shall we." Aggie said as she hoisted the back on her shoulders, Lewis gave a simple nod and followed the group as they went towards their objective.

"I hope you have some use for it in the near future."

"Naturally." The Talon replied with an amused smile "However, the true beauty of The Dawn is that no-one commands or cajoles it to rise. We have come so far already only thanks to the world of greed and paranoia that we live in today, only held in any kind of balance by fragile webs of corrupt and shallow alliances. The machine of human civilisation, what's left of it, needed no help from us to get into such a sorry state; and, when the time comes, the most warped and rusted of the cogs will be only too eager to tear themselves apart, as they've been prepared to do since long before our song began. The proof of the righteousness of our cause will be in just how little input is required from us to make it a reality. This course was set a long time ago, in accordance with The One Truth, and those who stand above us had plenty of room, and plenty of time, to see what's coming, if only they'd had the sense to look ahead."

Inside the compound, The Talon took her highest ranking operatives (judged in nothing more or less than her own personal estimation, rather than and kind of ridged hierarchy of stars and chevrons) up to the rooms that had been designated as her personal apartments. She sat them all down cross-legged on the floor with her, Nahla at her left, Dietrich at her right, and Riley, along with a dozen others, sat in an arc across from them. The look in her dark eyes was deadly serious.

"You are all hear because you have served our cause with distinction..." she began "Some with unshakeable loyalty, some with invaluable guile, some with ferocity in battle, and many by all three. You are my best and brightest, the conduits through which all our hopes and dreams will be fulfilled. Through years of struggle, you have each earned my utmost confidence. This is for the best, as the least you are owed from me in return, is a chance to prepare yourselves for what will be happening this day. As cruel and narrow-minded as they are, the militants of LTIP will be far from the worst dogs that we must rub shoulders with today; and for many of you, today will stir up the very hatreds that drove you to join me on this mission..."

=========================================================================================================================

"Is there somewhere you'd keep them, or should we find somewhere else to hide our weapons until we want to leave?"

"Should you only wish to stay with us temporarily, I would consider it my no small measure of responsibility to keep your weapons safely under lock and key." Christa replied with a kind smile. "Simply leave them here upon entry, and I'll take care of the rest."

Not everyone though, was as happy with the arrangement...

"You can't seriously be considering this."

"Please!" Christa held her hands up in a neutral gesture, though her tone was commanding all the same. "I hope you can understand, our 'sentiment' is far from meaningless. In such a violent world, the only way that we have discovered for even a few of us to maintain tranquillity, is to live apart from all such fears and temptations. Many of the people who found there way here, just like you, came from violent lives. If just one of you were seen to be carrying a gun in our midst, they would be compelled to be threatened by you, and therefore to be hostile and reactionary. Your presence would be a constant reminder of places and memories that they have worked extremely hard to leave behind, and the stability that we provide for them would be undone..."

Nikolai listened, in two minds. It was very hard for him to envision a world where things he valued wouldn't be taken from him unless he was equipped to defend them, and so Lucia's argument, automatically, made sense to him. On the other hand, it was Lucia who was always telling him that the outside world was different, that things didn't have to be this way, no matter how many time they ended up being just that. Maybe she was more right than she knew? Maybe, this time, it was Lucia who was too scared to let go of something to realise that she didn't need it?

He felt a weight on his shoulder. Natalia, silent as always, had left her vantage point in the trees, and come to join the others. Nikolai now turned to her, hoping to see a deciding vote in her eyes.

"As for the men you drove away..." Christa continued "Who's to say what they would have ended up doing. They were drunk, and greedy, a dangerous combination to be sure. However, for all their bluster, they were also afraid of reprisal from the stronger criminal bands who enjoy certain trades with us. If they had not been afraid, you would have arrived far too late to make a difference, I can assure you. In either case, I've seen enough of the world to know what would have happened had I come out to meet them carrying a loaded gun. Using weapons to defend yourselves only convinces the people with more weapons than you that you have something worth taking, maybe said something being the weapons themselves? We are not ignorant of the dangers outside, but the people here are as tired of running as they are of fighting. All they want is too live in peace, for as long as peace can possibly last."

"Lucia..." Nikolai spoke up, turning to face her. There was turmoil in his eyes; but, with one hand joined with Natalia's for support, he began to disarm himself with the other, dropping his guns, one by one, onto the grass on front of him.

"I still don't know how far I can change." he said, struggling more with his words as he always did when he was thinking about something very hard. "I don't know if I'll ever stop looking at a man, and first seeing how I would kill him if we fought. I don't know if I'll ever stop dreaming of fire; but, there are some things I know. I know I don't want to go back to that barn to sleep. I know I don't want to go back on a ship, hoping that maybe we can stop at the next place, or the next, or the next. I want to try and live in peace, and here, for the first time, people want us to. You are Free Man. You can make your own choice, but..." The last weapon to leave Nikolai's person, his hammer, fell with a wet thud onto the ground. "I want to stay."

"I want to stay."

Acolyte clapped his friend on the shoulder. "Good for you, Nikolai."

Looking down at the huge pile of weapons, Acolyte glanced back at the other Free Men. He imagined at least a couple of them would follow their leader down this path. Natalia, for instance. Turning to Christa, he laughed and said, "we'll help carry all of this, obviously."

This was fucking crazy. Neil's mission required that he stick to the shadows and parctice extreme discretion, and yet here he was, sitting in an aluminum box, setting off explosives. He was quite literally rocking the Pit to its core.

Neil had been fidgeting nervously as the countless blasts echoed all throughout the facility. He had barely even registered Chen and Felix's arrival when they eventually found their way back to him.

No words were exchanged between the three men as they remained still, listening the the carnage unfold around them. Some time passed, and the expression on Chen's face told the sniper that something was wrong. "Where's Luka?" Neil asked.

***********************************************************************************************************************************************************

Nahla sat patiently and listened to Talon's words. The way she was talking made it sound like they were much closer to their goal than Nahla had originally thought. It all seemed so... final.

"... As cruel and narrow-minded as they are, the militants of LTIP will be far from the worst dogs that we must rub shoulders with today; and for many of you, today will stir up the very hatreds that drove you to join me on this mission..."

"No grudge is worth the trouble," Nahla promised her. "We will stand by you til the end."

***********************************************************************************************************************************************************

You are one idiotic *****.

Before Lucia could spit venom at the pacifist, Nikolai chimed in.

"I want to stay."

Lucia was speechless. It had been Nikolai's own logic that drove her argument, and now here he was, denying his own ideology. Had he really changed so much? Was this Lucia's doing?

As proud of him as she wanted to be, should couldn't find it within herself to accept his decision. It was simply too stupid. Too irresponsible.

Sure, she wanted to believe in others like she used to. She wanted to believe she could feel safe again. The world she had described to Nikolai in their talks was one of reason, community and empathy. But now, after everything she had been through, could she really afford to be so naive?

Lucia's dumbfounded expression eventually warped into one of frustration. "Fine," she hissed. "If you want to play pretend with a bunch of disillusion hippies that's fine, but count me out. You're blind if you think that disarming yourself will bring you peace. All you're really doing is putting a fucking sign on your back that says, 'Kill Me'!" Her eyes darted between Nikolai, Acolyte and Natalia before finally finding her own feet. A knot was forming in her throat. "Fuck this shit." She croaked before starting towards the barn once more.

Despite what she claimed to believe, Lucia didn't trust anyone but herself. That much was clear now.

"Fuck this shit."

"Lucia..." Nikolai called after her. This made no sense. He understood her trepidations, but in putting his weapons down, he thought he was being who she'd wanted him to be for all this time. He had thought she would be proud of him.

Nikolai had meant what he said, he couldn't walk away from this chance, not after having gone through so much to reach a place like this. However, for each step Lucia took away from him, the promise he had made to her last guardian seemed to stretch further and further to breaking point. Not to mention, the memories of everything they had shared since then. Nikolai had so few memories as it was, good ones at least, he couldn't let the memories of Lucia turn sour. Weapons or no weapons, she wouldn't last a week on her own.

All the other things he might have said stalled on the tip of his tongue. Should he plead with her, order her to come back? Before he could do either, however, Natalia's grip on his hand tightened, and he turned to face her.

"I will go talk to her." Natalia said. "Someone needs to go and get the rest of our things anyway."

Nikolai appeared deep in thought for a second, before he nodded.

"Acolyte." He said, finding the other man with his gaze. "Go with her."

=========================================================================================================================

"Where's Luka?"

"Hell if I know." replied Chen, tense, as he tried to figure out their next move. A part of him was sincerely tempted to just leave Luka and Fiona alone, and hope they would figure out a way to catch up with Chen later. His priority was still protecting the Kill Switch after all, and any number of things could go wrong by wading back into the thick of it. On the other hand, losing two soldiers of their calibre would be a huge loss, and it was very early days yet.

Wherever they went, however, they couldn't stay here for long, in the mess of vents and exhaust flues that snaked in between the different levels of the complex, providing The Pit with life support. As systems started to overload thanks to the damage they just did down below, these maintenance areas would soon become hell on earth.

"Right, here's the plan." Chen said tot the others, making up his mind. "I reckon we've got maybe five minutes before the Mid-Levels are crawling with a whole company of hostiles, maybe more. Before that happens, we're going to go and find Luka, and Fiona, and then we're gonna go and lose ourselves in the Lower Levels. Let's move out!"

=========================================================================================================================

"What the hell is happening down there!" Hammond roared, as he burst into the forward command centre that the Songbirds had set up in the Upper Levels. With most of the buildings on the surface having been rendered derelict, it was the only place left that offered appropriate shelter and tactical feedback.

"General." one of Hammond's officers began. " A few minutes ago we detected a large spike on the facility's telemetry data, indicating that the main refinery in the Industrial Complex had been reactivated and increased to peak activity. We sent a team to investigate, but before they could report back there were several explosions across the refinery. I appears several safety junctions have been targeted..."

"You're telling me this was no accident?!" Hammond somewhat stated the obvious.

"Yes General. Someone has sabotaged the facility. With the refinery now producing steam and exhaust fumes at such a rate, and the valves failing, the potential damage to the facility if we can't..."

Hammond cut him off with an inarticulate snarl. This was Lee's doing, or rather, his minions that were still operating under Hammond's nose. It may even have been the same group Barrow's had encountered before.

"I want are engineers down in that refinery five minutes ago!" he ordered. "Find a way to shut it down, I don't care if they have to dismantle the damn thing!"

Hammond didn't care about RACDI-Alpha's resources, or even collateral damage, but he couldn't hold a facility that was collapsing around them, with an entire population in panic.

"Bravo and Echo companies will escort them. They have orders to kill anyone who does not return to their cells. As for everyone else, they are to lock down The Pit. No one moves an inch down there until we've stabilized the situation and rooted out those responsible, understand? No one leaves!"

As his officers went to work, Hammond looked down at the files that he still had clutched in his hand.

"And somebody find me Barrows!" he yelled to no-one in particular.

"Go with her."

"Right," Acolyte replied, dumping his unloaded pistol on Nikolai's mound of weapons. Turning on his heel, he strode off, back towards the barn.

Still fuming, Lucia threw the barn doors open and marched back towards her bedroll. She stood there, staring at it for awhile, and then looked at all the others. Soon they would be gone and only hers would remain.

Better off that way...

Plopping down onto the ground, she rested her back against of the wooden support beams. "Fuck," she whispered with a sigh.

This is all fucked up...

They'd kept there distance as the followed Lucia back down the winding path. Now, Natalia and Acolyte walked up to the doors, still wide open, and saw the girl hunched up alone inside.

"Lucia..." Natalia began in her heavily accented voice, leaning against the door. "Let's talk."

Lucia plopped the back of her head against the beam and let out another exaggerated sigh. "Sure," she relented. "Talk."

Acolyte sat down next to her, a couple of feet away to give her her space. He forced a chuckle. "You ever thought you'd see the day when Nikolai would be the one asking for peace, and you'd be the one clinging to your weapons?"

Lucia shrugged and kept her eyes on her feet. "After everything we've been through it would be stupid to give them up," she told him. "I've seen what happens to people who can't defend themselves. I've been there before and I don't want to go back."

"Who said anything about not defending ourselves?" Natalia replied, moving closer and squatting down beside Lucia. "We've all seen the same things; and what I've seen, is that people with guns die just as quickly as people without guns, if they're stupid, if they're arrogant... or if they're alone. It hasn't been guns and knives keeping us alive all this time. We're still here because we've taken care of each-other."

She lifted Lucia's chin and look right into her eyes. Natalia had the sharp gaze of a sniper, but there was warmth there too.

"Do you really think Nikolai will ever stop protecting us?" She asked "Hammer or no hammer?"

Lucia gave the sniper a pained look. "Of course not," she whimpered, averting her gaze reflexively. "It's just that... who the fuck are those people? Who are they to tell us what to do? I thought we were 'Freemen'. I thought we were done being controlled." The trembling greek girl met Natalia's gaze once more. "We don't need them. We don't! We were fine the way we were."

Acolyte sighed, and shuffled closer. Taking Lucia's hand, he dropped something into it. It was the bullet that had been chambered in his pistol, that he'd had to eject manually.

"This whole journey has been because we weren't fine the way we were," he said. "You've seen how it made Nikolai, being caught between two worlds. I think going all the way is probably the only way he'll ever get closure. That bullet might seem like the most important thing in the world to you right now, but it's not gonna keep you warm at night."

Lucia's bottom lip began to quiver as she stared down at the bullet in her hand. "'Keep me warm at night?'" she croaked, tears now standing in her eyes. "You think, after everything that has happened, I could ever feel safe again? For every moment of peace we know, we come closer and closer to losing it all. I-I-I don't want to lose you or Nikolai or anyone else! I can't lose anyone else! Don't you understand?!" Tears streaming down her face now, Lucia was hysterical.

As Lucia began to cry, Natalia leaned forward, and embraced her.

"It's okay." She whispered, cradling the back of the younger woman's head. "I'm scared too. We all are, and we all still remember what it felt like to lose people we cared about, but... maybe we need to try living a different life, before we can feel safe in living? Maybe they'll always be trouble for us wherever we go, as long as we arrive looking like we're going to start some? Maybe part of feeling safe is just not caring about the risks. I can give you a lot of maybe's, but all I know, is that if it's a choice between sleeping well tonight and dying tomorrow, or living a few weeks or months more, always sleeping with one eye open, I know what choice I'll make."

She pulled away from Lucia a little, and smiled as her eyes searched her face again.

"All these people are asking, is that we don't come into their homes carrying enough weapons to kill them all. For now, I don't think that's too much of them to ask. Let's try it; and if it doesn't work for us, then we can keep moving."

"O-okay," Lucia muttered without really thinking about it. Despite marching off, she really didn't want to be alone. These people were all she had left. They were her family now. She would have to trust their judgement.

She nodded and swallowed hard. "Okay," she repeated more firmly. "I'll give it a try at least." She offered her friend a half-hearted grin as she began wiping away her tears.

Producing a handkerchief from the pocket of his shirt, Acolyte offered it to her before turning to Natalia.

"You mind giving us a minute?"

Natalia nodded and got up to vacate the barn.

Lucia used the hankerchief to wipe away her remaining tears. "Am I in trouble?" she asked the monk with a nervous smile.

Acolyte laughed. "Yeah, I'm totally gonna ground you for this," he replied.

Taking a moment to marshal his thoughts, he said, "you know, when I first got sent down, I was a pacifist."

"To the Pit, you mean?" she inquired. She chuckled sadly. "I was too, actually."

"Yeah," he said, smiling ruefully. "I mean it was a mark of our order. You know, they taught us all this martial arts stuff, the human anatomy and how best to exploit it, although admittedly that was more for healing... the combat was meant to be meditative, we weren't ever supposed to actually use it. I think I made it maybe three months before a bunch of Crips jumped me outside my cell."

"What did you do?" Lucia asked. "I mean, I am sure you hesitated at least a little." She looked at her feet and frowned. "It's hard to unlearn important things like that."

Acolyte nodded. "Got this for my troubles," he said, lifting his shirt. Just above his belly button was a small puckered scar. "One of 'em had, I shit you not, rolled up a piece of paper so tight he could shiv me with it."

Lucia cocked an eyebrow. "Are you fucking serious? That's insane," she said.

He nodded again. "Necessity is the mother of invention, I guess. Anyway, when I actually started fighting back... I'm not gonna lie, it felt like there was a big weight off my shoulders. But at the same time, I kinda felt sad. I still miss it, like something's been broken and I can't put it back together."

"I was never trained in pacifism like you were, but I grew up surrounded by conflict," Lucia told him. "I saw what war did to innocent lives and I couldn't help but condemn it. I took up medicine because I wanted to help people. I guess you could say I wanted to fight against violence itself." She shrugged. "Now I'm like you. I don't think I could ever go back to being that way."

And now, they were closing in on the point of it all.

"I'm glad you agreed to at least try it their way. The point of telling you all that is that I get how you feel. How scary it is. It's just... there's a real possibility that even if it doesn't work for you, and you can't live like that anymore, the others might not feel the same way. Nikolai might not want to leave, even if you can't bear another second of it."

Scratching the fresh stubble on his jawline, he looked at her, his eyes locking on hers. "If you can't do it, if a week or a month from now, you wake up and you have to get out... I'll go. If it's what you want, we'll get our guns and head out. We can go to Holland, or Greece, or wherever you want. But just be sure it's what you want. Be sure it's worth leaving the others behind."

"No, Acolyte," she said defiantly, "I can't let you do that. If you want to leave them behind, that's fine, but I can't make that decision for you. We're Freemen, remember? We all make our own decisions. I appreciate it, but I won't drag you down with me if I choose to do something stupid."

Acolyte laughed. "Don't worry about me," he said. "I'm sure where I'd rather be, and the wholesome village community doesn't really play into it."

Lucia smiled. "As long as it's what you want," she reiterated. "Thanks for... well, you know. I guess I need to be smacked upside the head sometimes."

Acolyte laughed again and gave her a slow, exaggerated mock-slap across the back of the head, before getting to his feet and offering her his hand.

"Come on," he said. "I bet they have nice food in that village we're missing out on, so bad."

Lucia hopped to her feet and gathered her things. "Lead the way," she chirped.

'What the fuck was that?!'

Judah lay awake staring wide eyed at the ceiling of Manayara's living room. She may have hated the *****, but her place was dope as fuck- plus she didn't have any kids, which made it one of the only places where Judah could get a full night's sleep, or it usually was....

The young girl lay perfectly still, listening intently for any other sounds. All she could hear were deep inarticulate rumblings, like a distant storm or shore. Whatever was happening wasn't anywhere near here, or within the walls of the commune for that matter. She snuggled down deeper into her bedding, digging both of her shoulders deeper into her thin bed roll, stopping right before she hit the hard unforgiving floor. Today was going to be a big day, and she preferred to catch another hour of sleep before Manyara came ambling into the room with her sour attitude and vile tongue.

As she lay there, she grew progressively more aggravated. Every time she felt sleep take her, another neighbor would creak open their door, leaving their homes to mutter at one another under the starry sky. Something important was going on and it was clear that none of the other villagers were going to shut the fuck up about it. Judah sat up on her bed roll, leaning back on her arms as she willed herself to get out of bed.

'No, never mind me! No hassle at all. Just talk right outside the window. Twats.'

Muttering under her breath, she got out of bed and went for the door, "Fuckin' goddamn fucks."

Judah opened the door to find Micheal and Verra whispering to each other directly under her window and Min standing on her tiptoes, peering into the house. They were clearly looking for her.

'What the hell do they want'

"Pieces of shit! You know I only sleep here cause I get to sleep in." Judah hissed, in a low growly whisper, "So what the fuck guys?"

"Did you hear it?! Jude, did you hear that boom?" Micheal asked, his excitement hardly contained. Before Judah could think to reply, Verra cut in, getting directly to the point, "It was a gunshot Jude. Someone shot off a man's arm- took the thing clean off." Min glanced down at two crouched forms with a dissatisfied grunt, "Don't be stupid. It wasn't the whole arm- just his hand."

"You should'a seen it though Judy. It was insane-" she said, as she stumbled toward Judah, giggling madly. As the giggly mess toppled past Judah, she scrambled to grab her, catching both shoulders and a stray whiff whiskey from off her breath. They must have been drinking up on the wall when they saw whatever it was they were trying to explain.

Judah held onto Min's shoulders, speaking in a hushed tone as she steadied the girl, "You guys need to head to home before anyone sees you like this." Locking with Judah's dark eyes the young girl interrupted, "-But Jude. We just wanted to tell you- "

"No Min, listen. I don't want you to get in trouble and I sure as hell don't want you getting me in trouble," She said tightening her grip on the girls arms as she looked towards the door nervously. Even if Manyara was a deep sleeper all this noise would wake her eventually, it was just a matter of time really.

"-But- the man with the robot leg was there! S'all I wanted to tell you!" Min exclaimed, her voice cracking as it broke above a whisper.

Judah spun around to face the drunk girl, her voice breaking "Nickolai? W-Was he hurt?"

Micheal pipped in, "I dunno, but some people got fucked up. They're in the commune, putting all of their shit in the... fuck what's the words?" Judah let go of Min's arms and stared at the dopey boy who seemed perplexed by his own thoughts. Christ, they were really fucked up.

'Idiots.'

"Store houses!" Verra practically yelled, finishing Micheal's sentence. Judah pressed her fingers against her forehead. Did they have to be so loud?

After a short pause, Judah thanked them hastily before turning and running for the storehouses. She had to be there for Lucia and the others, if they did something stupid someone would have to vouch for them, and Subira and Manyara sure as hell weren't going to do it.

There was little more left to say as Yu and the others made their way, quietly, deeper and deeper through the Lower levels. Chen and the other group had certainly fulfilled their end of the plan, the place was in chaos! Explosions still rumbled overhead, and Inmates that had retreated further down to get away from the fires and fumes above ran in all different directions, in search of a burrow that didn't look like it might cave in if things got any worse. With purpose, they picked their path through and around the frightened masses until they were in the deepest caves, where Lee's Back Door awaited them.

"Come on." Yu told the others, as he took point through the secret entrance. "We don't have much time."

===========================================================================================================================

A faint, rhythmic knocking came up from below the concrete, which Selena recognised as the signal. She nodded to Abigail, who quickly moved the crates off the section of floor, while Selena punched in the code. One by one, Yu, Lewis, Aggie, and Clementina all emerged from underground. As soon at they were through, the hatch was closed and the crates moved back, as if nothing at all had happened.

"Whatever the other's did down there is working." Selena informed them. "The bulk of Hammond's forces are going underground to control the situation. He's so concerned with keeping things contained inside The Pit, that he's taken his eyes off the facility above ground. We've got a chance to breach the perimeter if we move quickly."

"How do we do that?" Yu asked. "Thanks to the Kill Switch, all radar is knocked out. We can't leave by air, and there's nothing outside but hundreds of square miles of permafrost."

"Not quite." Selena told him. "I'll explain on the way."

They had no time to lose, but still, before they all left, Selena turned back to Abi.

"I know we're not soldiers..." she said to the other woman "But you can consider this an order. Keep surviving, no matter what happens to us. Thank you."

Chen stuck his arm out to bar Neil's way, and pushed the both of them back two paces, as a pipe running above their heads ruptured, belching a jet of white hot steam right down two where they would have been standing. Looking back, he nodded for the others to follow, before slowly edging his way around the jet and off down the hallway once more. Rounding a corner onto a walkway above one of the production lines, they ran into an Inmate packing a .45 calibre SMG. The fact that we was armed marked him as a collaborator with Hammond's forces, and as the man turned round to face them, Chen didn't hesitate, lashing out with a kick that knocked the weapons out of his opponent's hands, and set it spinning over the side rail. After a finger strike to the throat and a crunching collision between his face and the opposite wall, the Inmate soon followed.

From below, Chen caught the sound of barked orders, followed by gunfire and a few screams. Hammond's men had arrived, and it seemed they had orders to shoot anything that moved until they had the situation back under control.

'Shit! How the fuck do we find Iron Squad in all this?!'

"Quickly!" he yelled over his shoulder to Neil and Felix, as they picked up the pace across the balcony, to the other side and out of sight.

As Iron Squad moved through the chaos, gunfire began to sound up ahead like a tuneless drumbeat.

"Looks like they're starting without us, Captain," said Hayes.

"Then we make up for lost time," replied Korovitch, signalling them to sprint before racing into the frey.

Neil's eyes darted around frantically as he followed closely behind Chen. "What's the plan?" he asked. "We're not really going to cut our way through all those inmates, are we?"

"Not any more than we have to..." Chen replied as they ran "But, if we go where there's trouble, sooner or later we're likely to find Iron Squad in the middle of it."

It was as sound a strategy as they had right now.

Neil grunted, but otherwise did not reply. He had to place his trust in this man's judgement, even if every part of him was screaming at him not to.

"There!" Chen called out eventually, as he spotted Luka's image leading some others through the throng of chaos down below. Who were they all? They moved like soldiers. More than that, they moved like a close knit unit, with Korovich at its head.

'It can't be...'

Chen was about to call out over the noise, when another explosion rocked overhead. A gout of flame was followed by shattered metal and chunks of concrete falling from the ceiling. Chen hit the deck to the screech of metal supports failing, and the walkway they were on tipped over. The fall was a little over fourteen feet, before they were all spilled out onto the level below.

"Everyone okay?!" He called out, wincing as his injuries flared up again. Ignoring the pain, only letting it remind him that he was still in good shape, Chen looked around through the dust and smoke. Iron squad had left down a corridor to their right. If they hurried, they could catch them here.

"Don't mean to break your flow, Captain, but I reckon we passed some lads shooting at each other. That your lot?" asked Wickers as he barged through the crowd.

"Most likely. We hold here, and keep the way out open. If we head back, they'll all swarm in behind us." Korovitch punctuated this statement by mowing down a group of gun toting inmates attempting to flank them.

"We're fine," Neil barked as he helped Felix to his feet. "Was that Iron Squad?"

"I hope so." Chen replied. "If we're gonna have special forces squad's down here, I'd prefer it if they were on our side."

It didn't take them long to find Iron Squad. Unfortunately, an advance team of Hammond's forces found them at the same time, holding down a position in the East Wing of the Industrial Complex.

"Friendlies coming out right!" Chen bellowed, as they closed the gap towards Luka's position, laying down fire down the wide access tunnel as they did so.

"If I'd known you couldn't count to ten minutes by yourself, I'd have found you a watch." Chen said, as he dropped into cover beside Luka. "What the hell happened?!"

"What happened was that you sent me to evacuate people that by and large want to see me swinging by my neck," replied Korovitch, as he reloaded. "As for this lot, the quickest way to move them was to bring them with me. Besides, we need the extra man power."

Neil scowled as he set his sights on a footsoldier near the front of the enemy's position and opened fire.

Great, more liabilities to contend with.

"Oh I'm so sorry!" Chen retorted sarcastically "I didn't realise crowd control was too much for the legendary Captain Korovich to handle. Whatever. Introductions will wait. If we stay here, we're dead!"

Chen broke from cover, both pistols drawn and dropped two men who had burst through the door of a side-access tunnel.

"Neil, you go first!" He shouted. "Everyone else, suppressing fire!"

After emptying his clip and reloading his sidearm, Neil crouched down low. "You dumb fucks are gonna get us all killed," he muttered before popping out of cover, firing a few shots and leaping towards the access tunnel.

Rising in unison, Korovitch, Fiona and Tanner took aim at the crowd and emptied their clips, driving the swell of inmates back behind what cover they could find. Wickers and Hayes waited to take their place when they needed to reload.

"Felix!" Korovitch barked. "You next!"

One by one, their organised retreat gradually morphed into a full flight, the last remnants of the troops who had picked up their tail in pursuit. It might have been a chase that carried on until one side or another ran out of steam. Luckily, the years he'd spent down in The Pit had given Chen a few aces still up his sleeve.

"This is it." He announced to the others, as he led them down a supposed dead end at the end of cell block B8, before turning to face a small stretch of wall with a miniscule snakehead insignia carved into the middle. With no time for finesse, Chen lased out at the sign with the heel of his hand, and his arm sank through the plaster up to the elbow. He tore the rest of it away to reveal where a gap had been mined through the concrete to a maintenance tunnel on the other side.

"Through here. Go, go, go!" He barked, keeping his weapons trained down the hallway.

Neil shrugged and followed along. He'd known the Pit's inner-workings like the back of his hand, but this was one route he'd never seen.

Bringing up the rear, Iron Squad were the last through the impromptu escape route. Korovitch wondered where they would end up.

The maintenance tunnels were like a maze. While their entrance was not exactly subtle, from there, it was no easy feat to follow Neil and the rest anywhere. He took them through and under gaps where pipes were now hissing with pressure and heat, the circulatory system of the Pit that most didn't even get to see. Eventually, before they became in danger of passing out, Chen shimmied round a corner, the others following, until they were all standing on a narrow concrete ledge, a blank wall ahead of them, and a gap only just wide enough for a person to fit through below, the drop continuing sheer into darkness.

Carefully, Chen leaned forward, planting one foot and one hand on the opposite wall, before easing himself down into the gap, holding himself up with his legs and back, before motioning the others to follow.

"Please keep you arms and legs inside the ride and all times..." he joked "and try not to bite off your tongue."

Then he relaxed, and slip rapidly downwards, being swallowed up in a second by the darkness.

"Fuck my life," Neil muttered before following after Chen. 'Fun' wasn't really in the sniper's vocabulary, and even if it was, this wouldn't qualify.

Finally, it was Iron Squad's turn to take the plunge. All of them looked at the drop indifferently, except for Wickers who grinned like a mad man before jumping down.

The fall was likely not even ten seconds, but in plunging through the whistling darkness it seemed a lot longer, until finally the wall around them flew way, black turned to a surrounding of strange, gleaming navy blue. Lastly, the shock of the icy water enveloping them made the whole group fight not to expel all the air from their lungs. Even Chen, who'd made this drop more than once before, Had to shut his eyes and will his consciousness back into existence, as it seemed to want to float away to be replaced only by freezing cold, before he could kick to the surface.

They were in the Lower Levels now, the Northern Quarter, in an artificial lake caused by the run-off of the years long excavation through the underground glacier. It made a handy fast track out of trouble, even if it was just as uncomfortable, in it's own way, as the searing heat above.

"Follow me." Chen gasped, as he swam towards the shore. By degrees, the emerged back on solid ground, sodden and shivering.

"I think it's time this lot were briefed." Chen said to Luka, once he'd got his breath back.

Manyara woke up, there something about store houses?

She groaned and stretched and thumped her way downstairs. Manyara winced as she turned the light on and noticed an absence of annoying, bratty, teenager. The woman almost smacked herself in the forehead, what trouble was Judah getting into now?

Manyara scratched her head, why did the little shit even stay in her house? There were plenty of other options in the commune, it was probably just to annoy the woman even more. Judah seemed to like doing that.

Manyara sighed as she rushed upstairs and got herself in something presentable, then she thundered back down and rushed into possibly one of the dumbest people in the commune: Micheal.

"Do you know where she went?" Manyara asked.

The boy's mind whirred for a bit until he replied with, "Errr... who?"

"Judah." She stated, holding all of her anger back, "Tell me where she went."

"She went off to the... er... toilet." Micheal said.

Manyara clicked her tongue and stared into his eyes, boring into them, "Don't play dumb."

It took all the willpower in the world not to add something about the boy's lack of intelligence.

"Okay! Okay!" He yelped, "She ran off... that aways."

He pointed towards the store houses. So that was what the store houses remark was able, shame the boy couldn't explain the other noises. Well, she had her answer. But she spotted a glass bottle that hadn't been there before. 'Damn delinquents.'

Manyara picked it up and dangled it in front of Micheal's face and asked, "Where's the others?"

"O-others?" He trembled, "They're gone, I'm only here because, er, well, I needed to take a leak."

She dropped the bottle and slapped the boy before walking away. "Fuck sake."

The walk soon turned into a run as Manyara bolted for the store houses, just what the fuck was going on?

"Everything is sorted." Christa announced, as the hinges whined on the steel door behind them, as the cellar was closed and locked. Nikolai merely grunted in affirmation, the longer they had winded their way through the camp, the more hanger's on they had picked up. Wide-eyed old women and excitable young children fussed around the new arrivals, looking at them with a mixture of awe and apprehension. It made Nikolai feel a little uncomfortable. He was not used to being crowded by people who did not mean violence upon him.

Also, Lucia, Acolyte and Natalia had yet to return.

Once Judah crested the steep hill on the south side of the small community the storehouse came into sight. She took a second to look over the scene, taking note of all the villagers and 'Free Men' who had gathered.

She scanned the crowd until her eyes fell on the scarred Russian fellow who had saved her life. Taking a sharp deep breath she yelled his name before bolting down the side of the hill. Stopping suddenly by Nikolai side side grabbed his hand and inspected it, "Looks alright to me." she gasped as she fought to catch her breath.

"Judah!" Nikolai called out, smiling as the young girl arrived at his side. Crouching down, he gently reached out and inspected her head. She wasn't wearing bandages any more, but she had several stitches.

"You are better yes?" he asked her.

Manyara soon followed Judah, only stopping to catch her breath. No wonder there had been so many bumps in the night, nearly all of the commune was there by the storehouse like the circus had come to town or something. A shout from the scarred giant revealed why, or at least partly why: he'd must've stumbled in and created a racket, causing the commune to investigate and find the one-man freak show. To top it all off, Judah was there beside him. Manyara could deal with the little ***** later, at least she knew where she had run off to. Manyara needed details. She walked up and approached Christa.

"Why is he here?" Manyara asked.

"Oh, yeah. 'Course I am." She said absent mindedly as she looked around at those who had gathered.

She squeezed his hand tightly, "Where's Lucia and the other guy? They alright?"

Nikolai faltered, unsure of what to say to her.

"They... will be here soon." he answered. Was he trying to convince the girl, or himself? In either case, Nikolai hoped he was right.

Meanwhile, Christa turned to Manyara with a sweet smile, that neutralised the bitter woman's permanent accusing scowl effortlessly.

"Nikolai and his companions arrived here just in time to help repel a band of drunk fiends from down at the coast." She announced, which cause intakes of breath and a flurry of murmurings among the crowd. "Don't be alarmed." she continued calmly "They are gone now. They won't be coming back, and I doubt any more citizens of the port will be eager to copy their mistake." before turning back to Manyara.

"In accordance with the debts we owe them, for both this morning and yesterday, I offered them our hospitality for as long as they feel they require it." she said, silently daring Manyara to have a problem with it.

"Well, we do accept all types." Manyara muttered. Christa was indeed the mistress of the sickly sweet smile, and the way she went on about Nikolai's group, like they were saints or something. Manyara folded her arms and twisted her head around to stare at the giant. "Seeing as they're getting along so swimmingly, I suppose they can look after Judah as well." She added.

Judah looked at the man curiously, trying to figure out what he was keeping from her.

"Well what's holding them up?"

"They had to go back for the rest of our supplies." Nikolai grumbled awkwardly. "They will not take long."

"If that arrangement suits everyone." Christa said in answer to Manyara's suggestion, before turning back to Nikolai and the others. "We are a small community, but we have ample space. It shouldn't be a problem to find you all somewhere warm and dry to bed down. First, however, you must be hungry..."

He wan't being very forward, but Judah wasn't about to press a man she barely knew. Instead she pulled his arm into a gentle hug, "Well, I'm glad you're alright." Grinning stupidly, she added "Now, let's get us some food." Pulling Nikolai by the hand she started back up the hill towards the centre of the community, "I'm sure they'll catch up with us in a little bit."

Some time later...

It wasn't until Nikolai had seen the bountiful supply of food the commune had to offer, that he realised just how hungry he was. He's wasn't even sure he could remember the last time he had felt truly satisfied after a meal. Maybe he never had. The Arctic Wolves, after Nikolai's value as a human weapon had been proven to them, always made sure that he maintained a high calorie intake, to keep his strength up. However, the food down in The Pit had been tasteless at the best of times, and there was always something about being fed like a farmer feeds a Pig that sucked what little enjoyment there would have been out of the experience.

Now though, as he scarfed down slice after slice of ham, he was wearing perhaps the broadest, most genuine smile anyone had ever seen on him. With Judah sitting on one side, and Niklaus on the other, the usually gruff, dour Nikolai was seemingly absent.

At the end of the long table, far away from their attention, Christa watched the new group, and Nikolai in particular, with interest. She was no longer smiling. In fact, there was little visible emotion on her face at all, until the door at the end of the timber hall once again swung open.

"Something smells fucking delicious," Lucia announced as she stepped through the door. She had cheered up considerably since her outburst in front of the commune. Even still, she avoided making eye contact with Christa when she took a seat at the table across from Nikolai and Judah. "Haven't seen food like this in... I don't even know how long!"

"You think it's been a while for you, try five years," Acolyte said, sitting down next to Judah. "In fact, the temple pretty much just fed me rice the whole time I was there, so it's more like eight years since I've had a really decent meal!" He gave Christa a dazzling smile. "I think I'll have to reset that counter now, though."

Nikolai had been too focussed on gorging himself to notice the doors open, and it wasn't until Lucia spoke up, opposite him like nothing in the world had ever happened outside, that he even knew she was there. The heel of bread he had been holding fell back onto the plate, and he just stared at her in silence for a few seconds, crumbs dropping periodically out of his beard.

Then he lunged at her, vaulting right over the table to the gasps of many around, rather than make the lengthy trip around it. Once on the other side, he swept the younger girl of her feet and spun her around. Laughing, actually laughing, as he embraced her.

"I thought you were angry at me..." He said, incredulously, once he had eventually set her down. "I'm sorry. I made you feel alone out there. I didn't mean to!"

Christa had raised her eyebrows at Nikolai's display of affection, before turning her gaze back to answer Acolyte's compliment.

"You are too kind." she said. "Although, we are simply fortunate. The land here is fertile, and yet unclaimed. The boundaries of our community are far larger than they might appear on the outside, once you account for the forested parts. We have plenty of space left over for crops and livestock. I like to think all live comfortable, bountiful lives here, even the non-human residents."

"You have nothing to apologize for!" Lucia scolded, still reeling from her sudden vertigo. She could not have anticipated Nikolai's reaction in a million years. He really had changed. Hugging him tight, she nuzzled her head against his enormous chest. "I'm sorry, I won't do that to you ever again. I promise."

Acolyte smiled as he watched Nikolai's display of affection. Raising his drink at the other man, he said, "careful there, Nikolai. You'll make Natalia jealous!"

"Come on!" Nikolai responded, his enthusiasm undiminished. "I know you doubted before, but the food here is so good!" Spying Natalia standing behind the pair of them, smiling at their reunion, Nikolai got to his feet.

"Natalia!" he cried, unabashed; and then, in some kind of fit of ham-induced madness, took her in his arms and kissed her full on the mouth.

Natalia's eyes went wide with shock at first. She hadn't even known for sure that Nikolai knew how to kiss! However, after a second or two, she sunk into it, closing her eyes, and wrapping her long, toned arms around his neck.

It was then several more seconds before they broke apart.

"Come! You must try the eggs!" Nikolai continued after they had broken away, as he led her around the table with an arm wrapped around her waist, while she blushed scarlet and looked at him with the eyes of a doe.

Lucia giggled like a school girl as she watched Nikolai escort his woman around the table. "I didn't know Nikolai had it in him," she told Acolyte. "Next time Natalia needs to get laid I guess I'll just run off again."

"If this is the result, I'll even fake an argument with you," Acolyte replied. Leaning in close, he grinned and said quietly, "but if those two are gonna start getting laid, I think I wanna run as far as I can."

"I've already heard the way he roars when he breaks a man's spine with his bare hands," Lucia whispered quietly. "I can only imagine what he sounds like when he's doing the same with his pelvis."

Acolyte tried to respond to Lucia, but only succeeded in sniggering around a mouthful of mashed potato.

Judah sat back and watched the reunion unfold, stunned to silence by Nikolai's fierce display of affection and the entire group's candid conversation.

'They do know I'm right here. Right?'

Sex wasn't necessarily a topic that made her feel uncomfortable, it was more the context that made her uneasy. She'd never heard adults speak so freely about killing and fucking. Did they not realize they were in a room full of other people?

She blushed slightly as Acolyte snickered at her side.

'Perfect.'

As if she didn't feel awkward enough. Gaze fixed on her plate she tried to keep her focus on the conversation. Although listening to their exchange felt unbearable it was proving to be insightful. She wanted to know more about this eccentric group and right now they seemed comfortable chatting about anything and everything.

Not to be distracted by the gossip of the others, Nikolai escorted Natalia back round the table to where he had been sitting. Niklaus subtly, but swiftly, made space for her to sit down by his side, and breakfast resumed in earnest. It wasn't long before Nikolai was even feeding her morsels of food off his plate; and Natalia, for her part, was eager to repeat the kissing at any moment when they didn't already have their mouths full.

When the tables were empty, and Nikolai and the others had sated their month's long hunger, Christa rose from the end of the table to address them all.

"Now you have regained your strength," she began "feel free to explore our grounds. We may end up needing to raise another cabin for you, but in the mean time, feel free to lay your bed-rolls wherever you like. We have a doctor to tend to any wounds or ailments you may have picked up; a barber if any of you would like a shave; and even hot springs, further up into the hills where you might bathe. For as long as you wish it to, you may consider this place your home."

"I know we're not soldiers..." Selena said as she turned to face Abigail and Zach. "But you can consider this an order. Keep surviving, no matter what happens to us. Thank you."

Abigail couldn't help but shed a tear after hearing, and decided to salute those that were about to leave.

"We'll do just that Selena, and I'll say it's been an honour serving with you, all of you in fact." Abigail proceeded to walk up to Selena and give her a hug. After a few moments, she regrettably decided to let go.

"Rest assured, there'll be a drink and a warm reception waiting for the lot of you when you return, if you return that is." Abigail said with a smile.

The halls of the pit rumbled and shook like the throat of some bastard of a concrete monster, dust fluttered from its resting place and fell down onto Barrows' head. The alarms were kicking up a fuss and songbirds were scrambling all over the place. No doubt they all had proper jobs that thy were doing but when crowds started getting crazy like this Barrows couldn't help but think that most were just running and shouting as they tried to look busy, all the while just hoping that things would work themselves out. Past experience had taught Barrows that it usually fell to him to make sure that happened. Or at least get the ball rolling.

It took him a little while to get his sense of direction back. Maybe the prison made sense back when it was clean and in shape but after the buggering they gave it the place felt more like a distopian rabbit warren. He got there in the end though. It helped when a passing solider called out to him. "Hammond wants to see you!" He didn't bother breaking stride.

"I am so surprised by that!" Barrows turned to yell at him as the squad passed by, turning the snark up to eleven. He'd have to compose himself though, odds were the boss man would be stressing out enough as it was.

Soon enough he found the makeshift forward command post where Hammond was trying to pull things together. Barrows sauntered up and lit himself a fag.

"This is going to be a tough one, but if I get some lads who can aim their guns right this time, maybe handle a knife and a sexy but stoic Asian bird who I can use as a wild card, then I think I can make this work." There was a pause. "Doesn't matter what kind of Asian." He tilted his head a little, just to make clear that he didn't want to place any undue pressure on his commander.

Yes it was an unprofessional way of going about things but it was in his nature to deal with stressful situations with humor. It was the one shield that had never failed him. Besides, all the other special teams had at least one inexplicably sexy / hyper-competent woman on staff. That just wasn't fair.

The pair followed Yu and Clem to the meeting point where they met with a very sobered-up Selena although Aggie could tell the situation did all the sobering up for them. More explosions could be heard behind them as they clambered their way to the meeting point but none at any time did they meet any resistance which gave a sigh of relief from Lewis but both of them knew this would only be temporary.

After Selena said a few words to Yu then to Abigail, it their turn to say goodbyes to the kind bartender.

"You've got a lot more to you than meets the eyes. When we see each other again, you know I'm paying for your drink." Aggie said patting Abigail on the shoulder before getting ready to go. Lewis on the other hand, was a bit less jovial.

"Thank you so much for everything you've done." Lewis said softly, giving all the gratitude he could through his eyes. "I do hope I see you again and like with Aggie, let me buy you drink wherever we meet again."

"Rest assured, there'll be a drink and a warm reception waiting for the lot of you when you return, if you return that is."

"Forget that!" Selena scoffed, managing to laugh in spite of everything. "When this all blows over and we come back, You're coming back with me to Seville and to some of the best bars I know. I'm buying."

"I do hope I see you again and like with Aggie, let me buy you drink wherever we meet again."

"Let's keep moving." Yu interrupted sternly. Still, as the others filed out, he nodded back to Abi, and snapped off a quick salute.

After that, they were gone.

Five minutes later...

They made their way, cover to cover, ruined building to ruined building, from the Ops Centre down towards the Motor Pool. The chaos on the surface didn't quite match up to the havoc Chen and the others had wreaked down below, but it came close. Between the earthquakes happening beneath their feet, the usual blizzard above them, and the constant roar of infantry vehicles racing around to where their orders had sent them, there were plenty of distractions that allowed the group to move across open ground unseen, provided they did it slowly. Chen grit his teeth, and fought hard against the cold. It had been a long time since fresh air had last whipped around his face. It might had been appreciated, had it's bite not been so icy.

Like lions, padding carefully through long grass, they were in sight of their target. Taking cover in the shell of one of the many vehicle hangars, Chen looked out under the sea of tarpaulins that sheltered the asphalt outside. The vehicle bays were emptier than usual, with so many of Hammond's forces scrambling. However, before Yu could quite finish the thought, a swarm of high-pitched engines won over the ambient noise, and a troop of military quad-bikes squealed to a halt, about a hundred yards from their position.

Yu ducked back into cover, as the voices of the soldiers outside barked command to each-other. They were speaking English, though it was clear that many did not speak it as a first language, merely one that they all shared. He looked over at Selena with an incredulous expression.

'You're kidding, right?'

The look Selena was wearing back suggested that she was not kidding in the slightest. Yu had to concede it was their best option. The Songbirds hadn't brought much in the way of Heavy Armour with them. Their plan had been to utilize speed, surprise, and air-superiority to overwhelm RACDI-Alpha. Their was nothing in either side's arsenal that Yu could use to out-gun the occupiers. They certainly weren't fighting their way out. Their only option was to out-run them, and the bikes would be faster than anything else in these conditions.

Checking again, Yu saw that most of the hostile troop had moved out towards The Atrium, away from their position. Three remained to guard their vehicles. Ducking back down again, Yu turned to the others.

"Three infantry." Yu whispered. "We need to take them out quickly and quietly. Lewis, you've got the left. Clem, the right. I'll take the middle."

Carefully, the three of them picked their spots, and took aim, checking their firing lanes were clear.

"Wait for my mark..." Yu informed them.

Another explosion from below heralded a deep rumble, raising the level of ambient noise just enough.

"Mark!" Yu ordered, as he squeezed the trigger on his rifle.

"This is going to be a tough one, but if I get some lads who can aim their guns right this time, maybe handle a knife and a sexy but stoic Asian bird who I can use as a wild card, then I think I can make this work."

"No need." Hammond cut him off, not appreciated the sarcasm in the slightest. "Based on yours and The Dragon's debriefings I have compiled a list of targets..." He threw the dossiers in front of Barrows. "Can you confirm that the men who attacked you are in these files?"

Nikolai fidgeted uncomfortably in his chair, prompting a scolding from the old woman attending him. It wasn't his fault! He couldn't help squirming when a blade was at his throat. If he'd know what the process actually entailed when it had been offered to him, he might have thought twice.

Searching for distraction, his eyes scanned the door as two very welcome faces walked through.

"Lucia! Judah!" Nikolai cried out happily, half of his face still smothered in white lather. "Come. Sit, talk... I am being 'shaved'" he added, grumbling, shooting a dirty look at the other women in the room. "I have to sit here and do nothing, but they said it would not take long. They lied."

Over on a different part of the camp, Christa leaned against a doorway as she watched Acolyte meditating, alone in the room apart from Manyara, who was pretending to fuss around some shelves near the back while she spied on him (not that Christa could judge). She thought it best not to disturb him, but it wasn't long before one eye flicked open, and peered in her direction.

"Something troubling you?" she asked.

"We will stand by you til the end."

"I thank you, Nahla." The Talon replied "And I hope you can stand by those words."

She took a deep breath as she turned back to address the rest.

"Today we will have a combined audience with dignitaries from both The Arab Protectorate, and the energy giant Helios International. While they are here, you will extend to them every courtesy, and take every opportunity to affirm their assumed superiority over us. You shall not, under any circumstances, provoke any member of their respective entourages. If there is conflict between any of you, you will bring it straight before me before any further action is taken. Tonight, we exercise diplomacy with two groups that represent untold suffering in the world, suffering that has brought almost all of you, directly or indirectly, to me. Your performances will not falter in the face of any percieved slight or injustice on their part. However..." her tone became somewhat stronger. "keep this one though clear in your minds, behind your smiles. They are our enemies."

Faintly, on the edge of her hearing, The Talon heard the dull, rapid beat of helicopter blades cutting through the air.

"That would be them now."

"You've got a lot more to you than meets the eyes. When we see each other again, you know I'm paying for your drink." Remarked Aggie as she went up to pat Abigail on the shoulder, earning a smile from the bartender in response.

"I do hope I see you again and like with Aggie, let me buy you drink wherever we meet again." Said Lewis following on from Aggie, Abigail noticing the warmth of his words through those fiery green eyes of his.

"Thank you, the pair of you. It's so good to see family who were once separated back together again." Abigail then when silent for a few moments, thinking on when would she see her parents again; perhaps never if things went wrong here, but it was something to hold onto.

"Forget that!" Selena scoffed, even managing to eke out a small laugh. "When this all blows over and we come back, You're coming back with me to Seville and to some of the best bars I know. I'm buying."

"That's sounds like a tempting offer, I'll consider it at the very least; another thing to look forward too I guess. Though I would like to see my family first before any wild parties happen." Abigail remarked with a smirk. Roughly five minutes later they were gone, leaving Abigail and Zach in the coldness of the secret area.

"Come on Zach, let's head back upstairs before suspicions arise."

"Something troubling you?"

Acolyte grunted in acknowledgement and closed his eyes again.

"More than usual," he replied. "Keeping secrets is... lonely."

"That would be them now."

"Want me to send Odin away?" Riley asked, gesturing to the huge wolf sat stoically by him. His ears perked up and swiveled at the mention of his name. Riley smiled. "People always get so nervous around him. I'll never understand why."

"I think it's time this lot were briefed."

"Agreed," Korovitch replied. "I haven't had time to fill them in. But I do know they picked through that ammo cache after Fiona and I were done with it. They've stored it in one of the derelict shafts from years back. It should be safe until we need it."
