I'm glad this has happened. The PS2 is the anchor of consoles. I loved the PS2, I still use one to this day and use it regularly I might add. Congratulations PS2, the console of the last age, has laid waste to a console of this modern world.

Well I'm going to just concede that my idea of Sony selling a sister model of the PS3 minus blu-ray would not work.
Apparently the PS3 absolutely requires this technology to be successful, and perhaps the several people who pointed out that no Playstation fan would buy a PS3 without Blu-ray may be correct. Maybe it will last 10 years and somehow dominate it's competition. Current business trends dont support that at all, but maybe things will change.
Either way, the PS3 is a phenomenal console and worth owning if you are a gamer. In it's way, the xbox 360 is also a great gaming console and worth owning.
So I will sum it up as this... The PS3 is a great machine that you should buy if you can afford it sometime in the next 10 years.
if you CANT afford it, The PS2 is something you should buy right NOW.
Either way, you cant really go wrong.

If this isn't the best reason for Sony to cut the price on the PS3, nothing is. They need to learn that people aren't going to pay that much for their console. Maybe hardcore gamers, but not the casual buyers and as the Wii has shown, the casual market is where the money is at and isn't running an electronics company all about the money?
I find it likely that by the time the PS3 produces these "amazing" games that will utilise the technology to the full, Microsoft will have already released there next gen console which will be on par with the PS3, but cheaper and so people will just but that instead. In the long run the PS3 seems to be a good investment but who the hell looks at things in the long run in today's consumer driven "I want it NOW." culture.

.Everyone seems to be saying that you cant fit MGS4 on a dvd which is actually wrong. You can easily fit much more than just 8 gigs onto a dvd using clever compression tricks. Thats currently the only positive in favour of dvds as compression technology is more advanced than bluray. Soon though they'll be putting much more info on a bluray than 40 gig
Think about it when you put a dvd into ur pc and install a game you often have to install way more than 8 gig. Ive installed massive amount of data from two disks when installing video software to my pc.
The onli pay off would be that to play mgs4 on your xbox 360 you'd probably get 2 discs one that you use to install maybe 10gig before you can play and then you'd just need to use disc 1 every subsequent time.
Of course microsoft shot themself in the foot by not puttting hard drives on all the consoles and promising not to have hard drive requiring games but they probably bust this rule for mgs4.
Plus eveyone who is saying that putting it on multiple discs would suck WTF i still swap disks when playing FF7 and games like that it's totally not a problem!
