Sure, being the only one there is unrealistic, but
an alien marker that was made by man that turns people insane, and into hulking undead monsters
isn't. It's a game, have a little willful suspension of disbelief.

Edit: Also, the necromorphs stop being scary after the 10th time I shot it's limbs off.
To be fair he was the only engineer left, and he was originally sent to actually help fix the ship in the first place.

Valid complaints and I agree for the most part. The only character I could respect and actually see ass-kicking an entire alien race is Duke Nukem. Nobody can deny his one-liners are his actual way of slaying those fiends!

"Damn, why do always take the hot ones!?"
Doom says otherwise.

There were no aliens in Doom. They're demons that came through a gate to hell they found on Mars.

As much as the Doom Guy is a Martian Earthling.
well... depends on the canon

I think the Doom 64 guy did decided to stay in Mars Hell for the rest of eternity and shit

but I'm not really sure about that

still, I just wanted to try if I could do image tags =P

The one man in this situation happens to be the only known man...
...with the knowledge on how to spread the Necromorphs across the galaxy. As mentioned at the ending of 2, the Marker itself says that they need to 'absorb' Issac to aqquire the knowledge of biulding more Markers {related to 'Make Us Whole Again'). The Markers emit a signal that causes the morphed flesh to work. And apparently it has limited range, because in a sequel bait its mentioned theres no less than 11 other Markers out there.

The Black Marker in this game was apparently evil, unlike the Red Marker in 1, and is the actual final boss.
EDIT: Forgot to mention the high death rate. Heres another...
The afore mentioned signal that the Markers emit (1st spoiler) cause insanity, homicidal and suicidal behavior. Once theyre mad theyll be too disorganised to fight of a zerg rush of Necros. Once theyre dead, in comes Mr. Infector and his 10-inch probcois. How Isacc got over this is up to you to figure out.
Speculation indicates that his drive to find Nicole kept him sane.

The main problem with the entire series is the lack of human contact. Sure, it's supposed to cast an air of dread, as if there is no escape off the completely alien filled catacombs of the Ishimura (And the Sprawl in DS 2).
Issac is more talkative in DS2 than in the first game that's for sure and you also get to meet a variety of interesting people (Daina, Stross, Elie). I'll admit I like games like Vanquish, Gears 2 and all those other shooters cause you're backed up by an entire army but in Dead Space the atmosphere has to be established and therefore throws reinforcements out the window. If you're looking for almost no human contact then play DS1 and you'll get the shit scared off you.

Also, you're not the only survivor in the end:

Elie survives too.

ITT: OP can't differentiate video games from reality.

Time to go outside and do something not in front of a screen for a while.

That doesn't mean I have to go by myself. I just don't like it when games send you off by yourself by NPCs somewhere in the general area that refuses to do anything helpful.

Most people play games to get away from reality so why would we want realism in games?

Ah! I knew there was a reason, but I never really thought about it until now.

In Bioshock, there are other survivors. Bat-shit insane suvivors, or survivors who intend to manipulate/use you to their own ends (often insane), but survivors none the less. Bioshock comes most alive when various characters call you up on your radio to chat, berate you, or otherwise interact.

Dead Space lacks that. Sure it has radio-logs, but those aren't real interaction. I think that is one of the reasons why I never enjoyed Dead Space, but I really liked Bioshock.

Everybody knows it's because engineers are the most awesome people on the planet. Hence, he doesn't NEED the weapons or marksmanship training. Duh.

(Yes I know I'm completely missing the point)

Thank you, someone who remembers what the entertainment medium was for.

To answer that: A large proportion of people who got into making entertainment didnt actually have any ideas. So it usually degenerates in two ways.
1) Like X but with bits of Y with a dash of Z.
2) Based on a true story.

Atleast they gave reasonable excuses where the NPCs are either incompacitated or stuck behind some locked door. Its not like they would be of any help anyway with all the obstacles and necromorphs you'd have to get past, any time a character was with you would become an escort mission, and noone wants that.

okay then, so you would be happier walking around those corridors with 20 other men ploughing through each level...

It is a game! It doesn't have to be super realistic!

Probably because coding friendly AI that doesn't suck is difficult. Also, I suppose they were going for the whole "horror" aspect, they wanted you to be alone to make it scarier, but I don't find it scary. It's kind of like what Yahtzee explains in his review of Amnesia: the inclusion of heavy weaponry and perfectly rendered monsters takes the edge off considerably. Dead Space is really more of a gore-filled gross-out action game.

i DO take your point
tha it's completely unrealistic for Isaac to survive where hundreds have died
but with all due respect
who cares?
it's quite a fun game
and given that the game is based around space travel and a non existant scientology religion
realism probably isnt the games unique selling point
perhaps i havent made my point particularly well
but it doesn't matter to me that the premise is silly
it only matters to me that the game itself is fun to play
which it really really is
