Really, I don't know what else to say.

It has always been pronounced "Sky Rim". And why would you think the "y" is silent? Also, there is no reason to put a space or dash between the two syllables. Should "Mexico" be "Mex Ico"? Or "America" be "Amer Ica"? I hate to break this to you, dude, but it is just you.

Also, I hate to think of what this guy is going to do when he sees the name "Hammerfell".
I am sorry, but those are really stupid examples. And i can say right away, Hammerfell sound a lot better than Skyrim.
Hammerfell makes less sense than Skyrim. It's called Skyrim because of the huge mountains that touch the RIM of the SKY. Rim of the sky. Skyrim. Makes sense.

What sense does "Hammerfell" make? That sounds like the name of a blacksmith convention. Or like what someone whose natural language isn't English saying that a hammer fell off a table.

Its Skyrim, and its perfectly correct to have that be all one word.

lol This series is a bit notorious for strange pronunciations.

take "Morrowind" for example. It's not pronounced "(tom)morrowind", it's "more-oh-wind"
I've never heard anyone pronounce it like that; its the first one.
Thank goodness I thought I was being dumb for a second there....omg I just quoted Woodsey.
Take a deep breath, I find its always a big, often soul-penetrating moment for people.

To everyone who says that there should be a space in the middle; skyrim is a compound word. A compound word are two words that are joined together. Thumbtack and newspaper are compound words. there is no space between them. Skyrim is called Skyrim because like others said the mountains make it the rim of the sky.Oh and Snake, it is Fallout not Fall out.

I don't mind the misinterpretation... but to think that "Skirim" (like Ski rim) sounds better then Sky rim?
Well "Skirim" is at least somewhat understandable, given that some people do confuse Y and I in pronounciation, but "Scrim" really is weird ...
I am not really awake, but ... do we actually have *any* word with a silent Y?
Could be skirim. And the letter "y" can be used to make an "i" sound. E.g. cynical

Sweden* -Sorry... But Scrimmage? I am from Sweden aswell and well-versed in our great religion but I have never heard that word been associated with vikings before... The only known use I know for scrimmage is in the english as in a great struggle and now after I looked it up again, a football term.

Would you kindly elaborate on this? :O I am fairly interested in knowing more.
Could the word be skirmish, perhaps?

>> Picture is of Satan.

And I think it's the very common situation of a word sounding exactly how it's spelled. Enjoy this new found knowledge that Skyrim follows the rules of the English Language.

How could anyone possibly think it's said any other way? What justification is there for the silent Y? It just wouldn't make sense.
My sentiments exactly.
The OP just blew my mind.

Tell you what: If the 'y' was supposed to be silent, do you know what they'd do?
They'd not write a 'y' there.

I've never even heard of a word in which a vowel that is both preceded and followed by a consonant is silent.

yeah, that's a little... um... I mean, unless you haven't heard the following:

Sky is a word, rim is a word. Skyrim is a made up compound word.

Skyrim is not a stupid name it is a mountainous region that nearly touches the sky and forms the rim of the sky like a bowel if you really need a reason for it. Other than that it is called Skyrim in games for quite sometime I really do not see how this has come up at all.

Initially I thought it was pronounced Ski-rim for some reason unknown to me but after watching a number of videos, replaying Oblivion for the 50000th time and actually listening to people in the game I realised that I'd been a bit silly and started saying Sky-rim which then made a lot more sense considering there are very tall mountains there which could be considered the 'Rim' of the sky.

This is perfectly reasonable, and youre all dicks. You cant say you've known how to pronounce every word ever.

Yes i makes perfect sense for it to be sky-rim, but youre assuming peoples heads make perfect sense out of perfect sense.
sometimes things just fit into brains different.
like "melee". I KNOW its May-lay, but i still think Mee-lee, and i will forever.

It also took me 10 years to find out the witch's name in FF1 was Matoya, instead of the Mayota i first read, and never looked closely at again.

Another one, Skies Of Arcadia. evil country is called "Valua" is that Val-wa or Val-oo-ah?
This is a bit different as they actually pronounce the name of the place in the game. This is not like reading Ultimecia wrong or something like that. So yes forgive people by being a little baffled by this.

I love Jackie Chan... and as someone else above posted. Y can sound like an I.

I thought Skirrim at first too, but then I remembered every TES before it.
Dagger-fall. Red-guard. Morrow-wind. Blood-moon.
The exceptions being the games that had a single word for their name, or the two that Bethesda found the space key for.

Edit: Damn I guess I passed right over the OP. I felt stupid for the minute that I thought Skirrim, and that was almost excusable i.e. cynic or lyric. But scrim? Like the fabric? Why would omitting the y change the k?

'Sky' and 'rim' are words though, so it does make some sense.

Still, mashing two vaguely poetic words together is standard fantasy fare and everyone should be used to it by now.
tolkien said it best dude

"Supposing you say some quite ordinary words to me - 'cellar door', say. From that, I might think of a name, 'Selador', and from that a character, a situation begins to grow."

should poe also change the refrain from the raven to never more?
