I kept skimming over the word and read it as "Skrim" in my head until I kept looking at it. Mind you, "Skrim" has stuck a bit for me though I definitely am sure that it's "Sky-rim".

Don't worry; I get ye as well.

No, I've never thought of it as anything other than "Sky-Rim."
And it fits... you know... REALLY FUCKING TALL MOUNTAINS. Touch the sky?

I don't even...

How could anyone possibly think it's said any other way? What justification is there for the silent Y? It just wouldn't make sense.
My sentiments exactly.
The OP just blew my mind.

Tell you what: If the 'y' was supposed to be silent, do you know what they'd do?
They'd not write a 'y' there.

I've never even heard of a word in which a vowel that is both preceeded and followed by a consonant is silent.
I love Jackie Chan... and as someone else above posted. Y can sound like an I.
It can sound like an 'i', yes. If that's the mistake you're making you end up with "Skirim" though.
Which isn't all that different from how I'd pronounce it if it was a Norwegian word for the record.
I still don't see how anyone would assume it was pronounced "Scrim".

A...A Silent 'Y'? I'm torn between posting a "LOLWUT?" picture, a "I don't want to live on this planet anymore" picture or just standing up from my desk and flipping it the fuck over.

Why would it be Sky Rim as two words? Does the concept of multiple syllables confuse you?

Hello sounds like Hell O, why do they put them together? Why not just type it hell o? I kept mistaking it for being pronounced 'Hay Low'.

That is your entire argument right there.

It's just Sky rim, although I kind of get what the OP means.
I've been pronouncing the word 'reagent' like 'reegent' for ages, until some British bloke told me it's actually pronounced as 're agent'. Weird how you can mispronounce words for years and not find out about it for a loooong time:)

I thought it would be "Skirrim" but then I heard "Sky-rim" and thought it was kind of dumb.
This guy gets me. There may not be indication why, but at the same time sky-rim sound completely out of place and stupid to me.
I dunno, it's not any more fantasy-sounding than, say, "Neverwinter" or "Amn".

Skyrim isn't on Earth, and it's populated with people that have only thematic connections with our own Norse. I don't think we're in any position to judge of the quality of a fictitious world's chosen nomenclature.

Captcha: "Réjoue Cet"
Liberal translation from French: "Replay this."

Okay, replay what, exactly? Work on your sentence structure, Inglip!

lol This series is a bit notorious for strange pronunciations.

take "Morrowind" for example. It's not pronounced "(tom)morrowind", it's "more-oh-wind"

...it's (tom)Morrowind.

it's hard to hear her pronunciation in this. In fact it's difficult to hear it most of the game. I used to always call it "(tom)morrowind" myself, until I heard "more oh wind" in game (in either Oblivion or Morrowind)

Wtf? Ya.. i am not bad at spelling and pronunciation. Grammar might be a bit different. But this word skyrim just aggravates me, it sounds dumb. I probably been pronouncing it wrong because i was giving it too much thought. THe name sucks.. IMO
Really? Because if I were you I would have questioned how dumb I must have sounded thinking it was ''Scrim'' (really dude, how the fuck did you came to that dumbass conclusion) when it is obvious that it's Sky-Rim.

The funniest thing about it is that you actually opened a Thread seemingly assuming that everyone else is just as clueless. And really? You gave it ''too much thought''? What the hell is there to think about here? Do you say Tack-Oh aswell? Or perhaps Buh-ed?
Well, there is a few here that share my initial confusion. So i guess we are all oh so inferior to your intellect. And wtf is Buh-ed supposed to represent. And i will also let you all know, I never played all the previous titles thoroughly, thus, i never heard them use skyrim in dialog. And skyrim meaning mountains touching the sky and creating a barrier is VERY loose analogy.

Also good example, i used to do this as well. I hate you elitist basically claiming you never pronounced anything incorrectly in this messed up language known as English.

I've always pronounced it like (tom)Morrowind myself, and it's pronounced that way a lot in-game, too, but some of the voice actors say it "more-oh-wind". In my experience the morrowind/oblivion voice actors aren't very consistent on pronunciations.

(Todd Howard pronounces it "more-oh-wind" though)
