Hmm... Wonder if I'm too late to the party? Anyway, here's my application.
Any input is welcome, even though it might be too late to change anything.
Name: Karl Granville Mandelbaum
Nickname: Doctor (Sc. D.)
Age: 33
Appearance: Karl stands at about 5'9" feet tall and weighs around 140 lbs with pale white skin and a rather skinny and sinewy frame. His short brown hair is slightly unruly and looks like little care has been taken to brush it or make it look more presentable, and his blue eyes have a mild murky quality to them making them appear a bit blue-grey. Since he has a tendency to not care too much about his appearance his chin almost constantly has a five a clock shadow on it which he only shaves when he's prodded by his superiors.
Clothing: Karl prefers to dress in comfortable and practical attire, loathing such things as formal attire. His usual attire consists of a pair of black jeans held up by a simple leather belt, a blue button-up shirt that has the top button undone and hangs outside his pants, and a pair of well-worn brown leather shoes. On top of this he will most likely be found wearing a white lab coat with several small chemical stains on the front and a few blotches of ink at the bottom of the breast pocket, and (when he's not forgotten it somewhere) his name tag stating his title, name and department. When he's preforming tests he's also required to wear a breathing mask covering his mouth and nose that protects against most chemical fumes and gases.
Weapons: Karl carries no items designed to be weapons, but his most notable piece of equipment has to be a prototype of what researchers in his world call a 'miniaturized atomic forge'. In it's usual inactive state it could simply be mistaken for an oddly shaped metallic backpack of sorts, with many rings and straps attached to two metal handles running the length of each side of the pack. But in it's active state all the metallic bands and straps are applied to the wearers arms and stretch a series of wires and jointed tubes over his shoulders and down his arms to the back of his hands, at the same time the numerous air intakes along the sides of the device become apparent, along with the many yellow danger stickers. The device allows for theoretically unlimited fission and fusion of atoms to construct any material needed at any time from the usual molecules and atoms found in air, the newly constructed atoms are then sent to the users hands and fused into larger chunks of material there, held in place by a strong localized magnetic field. Due to the limit of the devices intake mechanism it will not be able to construct vast amounts of materials, but as a piece of science equipment it was never intended to be used that way.
Powers: None besides what is granted to him by the atomic forge. Even though he has the knowledge to possibly utilize it in a variety of situations.
Strengths: Karl excels in using a 'mind-over-matter' approach, using his knowledge of chemistry and physics to adapt and gain the upper hand in a situation, this leads to a great deal of opportunism from his side, but he's not exactly worried about fighting dirty. The atomic forge supplements his knowledge well, and with it he has the potential to turn a disadvantageous battlefield into one where he's calling the shots. He's also been told that he's a good runner, something that will surely help his odds of survival.
Weaknesses: Karl is a coward, and will keep away from anything he deems to dangerous, be that opponents, terrain or anything else. However, he is also very reckless, and will sometimes disregard immediate safety if he personally deems it 'rather likely' that he won't die or be grievously harmed. The atomic forge also has it's limits when it comes to creating large amounts of materials, and it is also an item to be used with the utmost care, as evident by one of the yellow warning stickers reading 'WARNING! Unshielded reactor core. Please use adequate personal protection.'
Personality: Karl believes himself to be an educated and intellectual individual, but sometimes seems to be less in touch with what most people would call common sense. He doesn't believe in any real concept of honor, seeing that as a quick way to handicap oneself, and also doesn't care much for the opinions of others unless it is presented in an academic fashion. Being an atheist he denounces all forms of afterlife as lies by those who cannot come to grips with the fact that they will die one day, but is likewise very protective of his own life, not wanting his ideas and knowledge to be lost to the world, and the world be lost to him.
Fear: Bodily harm, wasting diseases, Alzheimer's disease, and very tight spaces (mild claustrophobia). He is also notorious for his arachnophobia, he can't stand being close to spiders and gets a very compelling urge to squash any who cross his path, unless their size is an issue, in which case he will avoid them like the plague. He is often bothered by intense crawling sensations upon his skin in the immediate aftermath of encountering an arachnid, as well as a mild form of paranoia.
Suit: Diamonds (Or Spades)
Bio: Karl grew up the only child of the headmaster of his nations most prestigious univeristy, and as such had many expectations placed upon his shoulders from a young age. His family wanted him to become an excellent academic, focusing on the fine arts and literature like his famous father, and hired private tutors to help groom him. As a result of this Karl grew distant from his own family, spending most of the time at school or being taught by the tutors back home. However, despite this (or perhaps because of this) Karl found himself being draw more towards the clear and defined subjects such as physics, chemistry, and biology, much to his family's annoyance. Soon he started becoming fixated on facts and scientific evidence, deciding to cast aside subjects he no longer saw important in the grand scheme of things, like theology, poetry, and literature.
When it became obvious that he wasn't going to become a 'true' academic of the arts like his father, Karl was sent away to the neighbouring country to study at the univeristy there at his father's 'request'. In reality Karl had at this point been given the choice to either shape up and follow his fathers directions, or leave with enough money to get him though university, but also be disowned. Having chosen the latter option, Karl wasn't surprised in the least when he found his family adopting a promising student from his fathers university to serve as his 'heir', but neither did he hold it against them, as they had hardly felt like a family at all to him.
Embracing this 'exile' he had been sent in, Karl fullfilled his dream of following the path of the sciences, and after many years at the university graduated as a Doctor of the sciences with flying colors. Shortly after he got hired as one of the lead researchers on a government founded project to miniaturize and test the groundbreaking 'atomic forge', as even though it was a truly awe inspiring achievement, it still didn't have any real practical applications.

"So this time we've managed to solve the input problem? Is that what this eye HUD thing is, Eric?" Dr. Karl asked as he fastened the straps of the new and presumably improved atomic forge around his right arm, having already strapped the rest of the machine in place moments earlier.
"Indeed, it helps with the element selection I'm told, and also helps immensely when it comes to constructing more complicated molecules. Like, you know when Henry had trouble making copper alloys and had to lump up atoms of each type into each of the fields and then combine them by bringing them together? Yeah, no longer. Now we can manage that straight off the bat." His colleague, Dr. Eric explained to him while he looked over the check list of the device, making sure it would operate as intended, or more or less as intended given that it was still very much a prototype.
"Sounds intriguing. By the way, speaking of Henry, why is he absent from this test?"
"Ah, well... He fainted due to inhaling toxic fumes while he was experimenting with the fields ability to contain certain molecules, he'll be alright I'm told. Just the legal department kicking up a fuzz about it all... Which reminds me." Eric checked off another point on the clipboard in his hands as he handed a breathing mask to Karl. "We have to wear these whenever conducting any testing from now on, otherwise we won't get any medical benefits, oh, and they'll probably mess with our funding if we don't."
Taking the breathing mask from Eric, Karl sighed as he pulled the straps over his head and fasted it in place. "Next they'll have us wearing hazard suits... Does everything check out?"
"Yes, it's ready. I need to head over to Geoffrey's to see how the numbers are adding up so I'll turn on the warning light and close the door on my way out. See you around lunch time, alright?"
"Right, see you then." Karl heard the clipboard being placed down on the table next to him and shortly thereafter Eric left the room and sealed the doors leading into the lab. 'Alright, time to get started here. What is first on the list for today?' Karl had only just picked up his notebook and started flipping through it when he heard the sound of footsteps behind him.
"Hey, Eric. You know I can't start the test with two people in here, didn't yo..." His words trailed off as he turned around to stand face to face with a researcher he hadn't seen before, he wore a standard lab coat but instead of the usual name tag he only had the sign of diamonds pinned on his chest.
Momentarily lost for words at this unknown and unexpected visitor Karl soon got to his senses again. "I don't know who you are, but this lab is currently off limits, hence the yellow light outside and the locked doors. So I'm afraid you'll have to exit the way you came."
"Afraid not, Karl Granville Mandelbaum. We have need of your services and as such we will not be leaving this room without you." The man spoke with no change in his expression, as if it was just normal for him to barge into a restricted area and make demands, truth be told it made Karl feel more than just a little uneasy.
"Uhm... Alright... What exactly could you need me specifically for?" Hopefully this would be some kind of misunderstanding or prank, but this person seemed a bit too serious for that. Anyway, getting him off his back and out of this room seemed like the best course of action. "Because, you know, you could just go speak to the department chief. He'll find someone to help you, I'm sure. Because I'm... Kinda busy, like."
"A reasonable response. At least, under normal circumstances." Karl started stepping backwards, he refused to believe in such things as the supernatural, and yet, it was a distinct supernatural sort of feeling this person was giving off right now. "But these are not normal circumstances, and I don't have the time to be leisurely explaining something you seem reluctant to believe. As such..." A pair of hands shot out from behind him and caught him under his arms, holding him firmly in a lock of some kind. Karl tried to struggle against it, his heart feeling like it was almost literally in his throat as panic flooded his brain. "... You will be coming with us whether you like it or not." The straps to his mask loosened as a piece of wet cloth was shoved between the mask and his face, his brain managing to vaguely identify the chemical it was laced with as his own panicked gasps became his undoing.

Any input is welcome, even though it might be too late to change anything.
