The RMS Titanic 100th Anniversary

On the 14th-15th April, 1912, between the hours of about 11:40pm and 2:00am the RMS Titanic sank. She was built in Belfast, Ireland (now Northern Ireland) and began her maiden voyage on the 10th April, four days before her collision with an iceberg in the Atlantic Ocean; the cause of the sinking of the ship and, consequently, approximately 1500 deaths.

And I am ruddy sick of hearing about it. I was born and grew up in Belfast and, unfortunately, still live here. Because it is the 100th anniversary, we have been bombarded with Titanic this, Titanic that, 'we are so proud', 'let's re-release the film... in 3D!', etc., etc., etc.

It subsequently took them 100 years to build a museum about the Titanic because they were too busy investing on putting up a broken slinky in the middle of town 'modern art'. I plan on going there once the tickets drop in price (students and unemployed folks get a discount! Woo!) to make snarky remarks on tour amongst all the American tourists visiting their roots.

I'm really sorry, guys. I'll stop being negative now. Feel free to discuss the ship; why you love it; why you share the same opinion as me in that they're celebrating a tragedy; or feel free to say whatever you want about it.

Sigh, I feel so much better now.

I know where your coming from, the TV, news, BBC news website and practically every form of media has been going on about the Titanic disaster. My brother's always been interested in the Titanic, so i'm hearing an awful lot about it, probably more than most other people.

I think it's quite understandable why the Titanic is getting so much attention though, it was a huge disaster- and it's one of those disasters that can easily grip ones imagination. The whole event was Hollywood movie material from the moment it sank.

Still, RIP all those who died, and all those who have faced a horrid death drowning at sea. It's not a way i would like to go.

You think you have it bad? I live near Southampton, so the Titanic stuff has been even worse here, I reckon.

It's funny, really. As a child, I was fascinated with disasters, both natural and man-made (I even made a mock-up newspaper called 'The Daily Disaster'. Why did my parents not take me to a child psychologist when they saw this?!) The Titanic was one of my biggest interests, though. My grandad even made a 2-foot long model of it as a surprise present for Christmas when I was 6, and it's awesome.

I really don't know why the Titanic, though. I guess a combination of coming from the port city where it set off and the fact it was one of the most notorious maritime disasters for a number of reasons, not least sinking on its maiden voyage, and having only enough lifeboat capacity for half its crew and passengers at best. It's really a fascinating story, but it's a shame everyone has gone so overboard for the 100th anniversary. It's kinda cheapened the whole thing, the same way the annual round of 9/11 documentaries has.

You do realise that it's a boat, right? They aren't used to being on the land. :D

Well, some say it only took them 100 years to build the museum because it was built with parts of the ship herself, so there's always splashing your money on one of the absurdly priced tickets. ;)

Oh, definitely. It's just that, from living in Belfast, I've seen so many banners and such declaring how it's 'our year', balloon versions of the Titanic hanging in Victoria Square in town, etc. It just feels like they're celebrating a tragedy to me. Not to mention the fact it seems like we forgot about it entirely, then only making a huge deal out of it 100 years later. I'm not saying that I don't care that the people died, it's just that people make it out to be this big amazing thing. Heh. I guess that's what happens when you let people from Ulster build a ship then let the English steer it (zing!). Either that or the ship really didn't want to go to New York.

Also, your captcha, even though you're talking about mustard, reminded me of this:

Ahaha, good point. Though I still wanna stress the blinkin' museum. 100 years for that to come out! Why not 50 years ago? 100 years later, they do not shut up about it; how it's 'our year'. Then again, us Northern Irish like to celebrate things that we really probably shouldn't be proud of. ...Well, to some degree (phew).

It certainly has cheapened it, I agree; quite a lot I think. As I may have said, it feels like they just forgot about it for years and suddenly it's bigger than the Olympics, you know? Then again, I'm just bitter about my home country, haha.

I've been comparing it a lot to 9/11 when discussing it with my friend, actually. We have a minute silence for that; partying for the Titanic? I suppose one wasn't that long ago but... still.

*You should have seen the things I drew and wrote about when I was ickle! A horror novella about a killer Humpty Dumpty springs to mind when I was eight.

In the future I'd like to be able to walk the wreck.

Though that's if technology is better then >_>

This brings me back to 5th or 6th grade when I was super obsessed with the Titanic, and I read into every book my school's library had on the sinking.

And just for a wee speck of comedy, have a nosey:

At the appropriate parts, of course. Someone ought to make that into a music video. Ah, while on the topic of the film; it's kinda obvious that she didn't mean physically let go... and she never did; see the ghosts at the very end of the film? Ever been told to 'just let go' of something? Sheesh.

It is interesting like; I won't lie :) It's just all this sudden hype about it! Argh! Anyroad, there's nothing wrong with visiting the museum here, haha. I'm sure it would be interesting enough.

Exactly! All the re-release of the Titanic film (in 3D, yeah!) is a huge money gimmick. If anything, it's a bit disgusting.

Also, no disrespect to the people who died, but seriously death is everywhere and if we kicked up this kind of uproar over every 1514 people died we wouldn't have enough time to eat or sleep; hell, the time it took you to read this thread over 1500 people have died, quick fetch the camera crew, this is front page news right here, I'll start work on the museum.

If anything making their death a cult hit and a media bandwagon is less respectful than just forgetting about them (or giving a small 1 minute silence, if you really must)
Oh good God, thank you. The museum comment also cracked me up a wee bit, haha. It really is just celebrating a disaster, not the passengers' lives at all. I mean, as I've said previously, we don't celebrate 9/11, do we? No, we have a minute silence. We have never once, not in my life time anyroad, had a minute silence for the people who died at the sinking of the Titanic all those 100 years ago.

Well i live near Liverpool and even here you get a lot about the Titanic (not just at the centenary)- i've been to plenty of exhibits in Liverpool's museums displaying Titanic stuff so Liverpool's always liked to jump onto the Titanic band-wagon because the Titanic was registered in Liverpool and a lot of the crew were scousers. (Aw mate, look that big fuckin' iceberg lad!) Still, i dare say if the ship had been piloted by the Irish things would have been much better :p

... Party down? I didn't realize anyone besides the die hard movie fans cared about Titanic. Then again the public is weird about remembering historical events, I wouldn't be surprised at a total lack of interest when we hit that other anniversary two years from now that has defined the world since.

Checking the news...

"Syrian army bombards holms in violation of truce"
"Breivik hearings to start"

Nothing about Titanic in my skimming.

On a different note, for those of you using BBC, I started the year by boycotting it because I didn't want to hear about royals or the Olympics this year, have I been an idiot thus far or is it a good choice?

I honestly can't say that I blame you. There was so much hype about Kate's dress and then 'oh, how pretty it is!' ...I thought it was hideous. But no, no; I don't blame you at all. They need to set their priorities right.

Ooh, Wales! I went there once; loved it. I can also pronounce tha name of 'the village with the really long name'; you know, Llan... er, it's one thing to say it, a whole new thing to spell it, haha P:

Huh? Does the film have ANYTHING to do with the Titanic other than being used as a plot device to kill the main character and some fancy expensive visuals?
Also, people DIED in the CONSTRUCTION of the ship. there wasn't any effort to protect the safety of the builders, and it was all just so they could build a big boat. The Titanic was a disaster long before it hit the iceberg.
Nope! Not in the slightest wee bit. Why do you seem so confused at my comment? Haha.

Aye, I know. Which better fuels my argument as to why it should not be celebrated, but sure.

Haha! I imagined that being said in a Belfast accent as well; fits either perfectly, though I'm sure a Liverpool one would be much easier on the ear! :p Though, depending on how broad, it might go more like (and emphasise the 'R's!), ''Ere wee lawd, duhrs an eecebuhrg o'er err!'

What! You best be joking! The Irish (down South, specifically) are known for their drunken shenanigans; the same goes for up north but a bit more violent apparently! Mind you, we find it rather funny; I've heard some people say how, 'down South, you have the drunks; up here, you have the murderers'. The amount of bomb scares we have is ridiculous to the point where we would just casually walk down the street as if there was nothing to worry about, ahaha.

I haven't the foggiest as to how I moved onto bomb scares, but anyroad! The point of the matter is, I can't say I have much faith in our lot piloting anything, haha! What are they like in Liverpool? Are you guys having any ceremonies as well? I wasn't in town long enough today to see anything but I guess I should be relieved!
