Seems like there's some old war film that featured a scots regiment that concluded with a bagpipe lament but I can't for the life of me remember which. I don't think it was Gunga Din, although that version of "Will ye no come back again" was very good. I remember some song about the battle of Culloden from somewhere as well.

"the little boy santa claus forgot" it's so fucking depressing, it's almost evil that someone would write it.

"Mad World" by Gary Jules.
second
third. I've heard a lot of songs/music/tune that filled my soul with such emotions, but none were able to do it as perfectly as "Mad World". Almost felt like watching my hamsters jumping off my balcony in an Indian queue.
4th.That song is so beautiful and sad. Great though.

If We Hold On Together by Diana Ross - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jMD5nzSSOMU

This seriously makes me cry everytime I hear it. Hell the whole movie does.

And for the saddest videogame song for me is Other Side of the Mountain from FFVII - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MQR6oko6YkE&feature=PlayList&p=09548A6939F32C05&playnext=1&playnext_from=PL&index=35

Tool - Wings for Marie (parts 1 and 2)

The song is a eulogy for the singer's mother, a devout Christian, who was paralysed by a stroke and died 27 years later (the title of Part 2 of the song is 10,000 Days, which is roughly the length of time she was paralysed). The singer didn't share her beliefs.

Part One [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rl4Jav58n48]

Lyrics:
A passionate spirit, uncompromised
Boundless and open, a light in your eyes
Then immobilised.

Broken
Fell at the hands of those movements that I wouldn't see.
Yet it was you who prayed for me.
So what have I done to be a son to an angel?
What have I done to be worthy?

I only pray Heaven knows when to lift you out.
Ten thousand days in the fire is long enough;
You're going home.

You're the only one who can hold your head up high,
Shake your fists at the gates saying: "I've come home now!
Fetch me the spirit, the son, and the father.
Tell them their pillar of faith has ascended.
It's time now! My time now! Give me my wings!"

Set as I am in my ways and my arrogance,
(With the) burden of proof tossed upon the believers,
You were my witness, my eyes, my evidence,
Judith Marie, unconditional one.

For me right now, it's Gollum's Song from the Lord of the Ring's soundtrack, sung by Emiliana Torrini. You can likely find it on youtube, if interested.

These tears we cry
Are falling rain
For all the lies you told us
The hurt, the blame!
And we will weep to be so alone
We are lost
We can never go home..

No one has said Moonlight Sonata yet? Wow!

Here it is, the one, the only, the legendary Piano Sonata No. 14 by Beethoven, or as it's better know; Moonlight Sonata. Probably Beethoven's most simple and yet poignant song. If all of humanity were destroyed tomorrow and one song were to remain to represent all of mankind into the future and into the cosmos, this is the one I'd pick.

as much as i hate to say it, hallelujah.

yes mock me, it is deserved.
Thats a great song it gets me all the time.
What's sadder is it has now been permanently marred by being an X-Factor winner's single (Think american idol) and, as Charlie Brooker put it, is now only going to be remember as the one "ruined forever as a song destined to be played at thick people's funerals".

Damn I hate Simon Cowell more with every passing day. I am just fortunate I don't like much popular stuff so he can't spray his own brand of tepid sewage over things I care about. What happened to Hallelujah was sadder than the actual song tho.

NIN's 'Hurt' and Radiohead's 'Creep' are pretty obvious choices, but the first two that came to mind. On 'Hurt', I think Johnny Cash's version is excellent and heartfelt, but it kinda bugs me how much people slammed the NIN version when Cash released his, I don't feel it's 'better' just a different style, I enjoy both.

Personally I like the NIN verison, it has hell of a lot more emotion in it. Johnny Cash's verison, is more familiar to people though with its solely acoustic guitar.

That said, to throw in some rap/hip-hop

Hailies Song - Eminem and Stan - Eminem

And back to rock, Hurricane - Bob Dylan
