127:So, mister Parker, you left the ASIO/E-NA in two thousand and nine. (cough) you cited the procedure for euthanizing Victors and the conflict that that left you with as your reason. If you could, please tell me what you know about Victors and just why killing them and not hosts or movers or sliders bothered you.
A:Twenty four hours. That?s the window that you have after they feed. The rest of the time, they look just like you or me. They have jobs, homes, wives, kids. They can sunbake and go to church on Sundays. Hell, a couple of the lads in the box think that they only know what they are in those twenty four hours after they feed.
I remember this one time, back in two thousand six, we tracked this bastard to a hotel in Sydney. Not those big hotels you see on the telly mind, but a seedy place near the edge of the suburbs. The coppers heard reports of a murder and looked inside. All they could see was this bloke, who turned out to be a banker by the way, surrounded by a pile of bodies. They cordoned off the area, asked around. Turns out, those bodies were a sizeable proportion of the local prostitutes. Thirty in all. Then they heard the screams. You can listen to the recordings yourself if you want to, but I wouldn?t advise it. Drove one bloke I know up in records to the drink. The cops called in a SOG team to get the girls out. Thank Christ we managed to intercept the request and send in some our lads instead.
We went in with just thirty minutes before the deadline, better that way, you know, the corpse gets back to normal before the locals can see what they had next door. We had six blokes, Me, Danno, Ken...uh Mick, Joe and some other bloke who?s name I can?t quite... Andy! That?s it. So we kicked in the door, went in, rifles raised, torches on. Then the lights came on. Jesus, sorry, just... he must have found a bucket or or something and he, he had been painting the floor with the blood, wall to wall. We were trained to expect that sort of thing from Victors, so we kept going through to the foyer. The carpet just kept squishing beneath our feet, but we kept going.
We made it to the elevator without much trouble. Now, with a host or mover, never use the elevator, because all they care about is killing, so they?ll just bring down the box with you in it, but a Victor, he wants to feed, so he?ll start walking towards the noise.
The top floor was more of the same; blood and not much else. Until we get to the ?wedding suite? and we find one of the girls. She was alive, thank Christ, but bleeding real bad. We had Danno take he down in the elevator to the ambos. I would say that was our first mistake. See Danno was the kid of the group, just twenty three. He had gotten married six months before and as he picked up the hooker he just kept whispering,
?she looks like Sara? over and over again.
I think he was crying and the blood was on his vest and there were these meat hooks hanging from the roof and, yeah. Exactly what you think. I think that?s how he got the blood in the buckets anyway. We spent about a minute clearing the wedding suite before we lost contact with Danno. I should have seen it. Victors head toward the noise of an elevator, he shouldn?t have gone alone. It was just there was the blood and those hooks and I couldn?t think. We called Danno about four or five times before we gave up hoping that he just hadn?t heard us yet. When we got to the elevator, the hooker was gone and Danno was hanging off the wall by a wooden stake. Then the screams started again, only this time, we were close enough to hear just who it was and what they were saying. It was the vamp and he was just screeching, like a bloody banshee,
?STOP ME! STOP ME!" At the top of his lungs, over and fucking over.
Then, he, I mean, it came out of nowhere and it was on top of Mick and it started at his throat. We had Kevlar on around our throats, I mean, we?re not stupid, but it just tore through it. I put two rounds in the pricks chest and it didn?t even blink, then we all started on it, just firing and firing and firing. Eventually it just sort of collapsed, still on top of Mick. Then some of the vamp?s blood went into Mick?s wounds.
The movies, they lie. Vampirism, unlike just about everything else on the organisations charter, is a real disease, spread through blood on blood contact. When they feed, they tend to use a knife to cut the victim before drinking, so they don?t have a rival five minutes down the track. That?s why we have such a high rate of psychological recovery amongst victims, they are never exposed to the disease and for all they know, it was just another psychopath. Mick though, the blood was in his system and so before we could reload, he went after Andy. Andy went down, but he gave us enough time to put disable Mick with more sustained fire. We put a round in Mick?s head, then Andy?s but the vamp who killed all those women, we sat around and waited for him to bleed out. It sounds cruel, but what he did to those poor girls, with the knives and the hooks, we wanted justice. Justice should be something that the bad guy doesn?t want.
Unfortunately, out twenty four hours ran out before his life did, so he went back to the banker in front of our eyes. And that?s why I packed it in. I can handle hosts and movers and sliders because they don?t look into your eyes and beg as they die,
?It was just a bad dream, why did I wake up, why couldn?t it stay a dream??
I mean, he was fucking crying when he said it.
We found the prostitute on the bed in the wedding suite when we finished our sweep after the banker was dead. So much fucking blood that we couldn?t see her at first. But here?s the kicker, it wasn?t a prostitute, it was his wife. See, Mr and Mrs. Banker had come out here to get away from the job for a while. Then, judging from what happened, the hunger hit and he attacked her, feeding, but not lethally. Mr. Banker wakes the next day to find out what he?s done, tries to end his own life. Fails. The hunger comes again and he instead kills a prostitute, still himself enough to not want to hurt Mrs banker. The same thing happens the next day and the next day and the next. Until somebody notices the blood on the front step of the hotel and calls the cops. The wife ended up living, but I?m not going to say where she is now or what she?s doing. The poor women deserves some peace.
So yes, I did end up wondering about the morality of killing the Victors after the banker, I?ve seen more subtle Victors both before and after that and the only explanation is that he couldn?t stop himself and so tried to get somebody else do it for him. Beneath the Victor, he was a good man, but the monster was still on top. So we kept on doing it, going into nests and putting an end to the sprees. We had another five nests after that before we found the outbreak's patient zero and put a stop to him. By the end of it, we were wishing that they were all as easy as that hotel. On all of my reports afterwards, I listed vamps as euthanized, not terminated, but thinking I was helping the good person underneath wasn?t enough and I could always see the banker?s face as we waited for him to die. I could still feel the blood in the carpet under my boots and I still hear the sobs of the wife and the shit we had to put her through to find zero. And through all of it I felt dirty, like I was the one infected. So I fucked off .Because even if those things have to die, I?ll be fucked if I?m gonna spend me life doing it.
And yes, you can put that on your stupid fucking report. Let the kids who grew up on the x-files and dracula know exactly the kind of shit you're gonna drop'em in.
