Do you dislike snipers, or campers? They are not always the same thing.

Example: I use a sniper in MewTwo more often than not, however I move from location to location, killing the enemy as they attack where I was. I use ambush tactics, forks with a FAL on hardcore.

Is that any better or worse than running toward the enemy spawn?

Your friend is a crybaby. Watch, I can do it too.

It's called "The Medic Principle."
1. The odds of having fun in multiplayer is inversely proportional to the number of medics on the map.
2. If a medic can ruin a good match he will make every attempt to do so.
3. Any class given a LMG, health packs, and defibrilators shouldn't be called the "Medic" class. Just rename it the "Jesus" class and be done with it (since you can raise people from the dead).

See?
nono ur medic principle is spot on :p i hate those fukers!!!

TF2.

I rest my case.
I always wondered why snipers were in TF2.

I mean, it is TEAM fortress.
That's why pyros (ahem) can light the sniper's arrows on fire for terrible, terrible damage.

And they can throw pee onto people to lower their defense. And to reveal spies to the rest of your team.

GO TEAM.

Well, if you're aiming for a realistic warfare fps (BC2), then why is he moaning about balanced gameplay?

It depends on the game. CoD2 I had little problem with snipers, since I used a bolt action rifle like a sniper, but sans scope, and I am decent at anti-camping.
Gears of War however...sniping is annoying. However that is due to its high melee ability and active downing.

For the most part, sniping is not over powered...you just suck. But then again, I practically specialize in taking out persistant campers. (or atleast am a stubborn fool)

In my opinion, a good game doesn't have overpowered or underpowered sniping mechanics. The sniper roll is to get a few kills, but mainly to suppress the enemy (this is my opinion). In Socom let's say, a sniper makes call outs to enemy locations, makes the enemy use less of the map than they'd like to, take out enemy snipers, and watch key points if possible. They don't dominate the map and get 18 kills and 2 deaths, but they also don't get rocked. They'll usually end with a 1:1 KDR but the overall advantage they give the team is what they're for.

Well, it depends what game were talking about to be honest. I recently dusted off two of my old favorites.

For instance, in CS:Source, I prefer to use the shotgun or the Ak-47/M4 (depends on which side I'm on) because frankly, I tend to suck big time in long range gunfights for the same reason that I excel in short range gunfights. My reflexes are hyperactive when playing fast paced shooters.

On the other hand, I also played BF2 a short while ago and in that game, a sniper is probably my favorite class. It's probably because the Sniper system in BF2 is just so weird that pretty much everyone sucks with a sniper. Opposite of CS:Source which can make anyone packing a AWP a fckin monster.

I find snipers make a nice crunch when I drive over hills.

Seriously though, the bane of any sniper is a vehicle.

Rifle?

No damage.

Mortar?

Good luck.

Grenade?

Yeah, right.

Even a jeep in the hands of somebody who isn't retarded can take out a single sniper without too much trouble.

Each role has it's strengths and weaknesses.

Sniper is Anti-Infantry.

Rock, paper, scissors.

Snipers are only fun for the sniper, not the person getting shot at from across the other side of the map.

Other weapons result in a nice firefight, enjoyed by everyone, before one person goes down.
More like an intense firefight enjoyed by the victor after one person goes down and rages. Dying pretty much sucks any way you slice it.

Really the source of most of the sniper rage here is from "realistic" shooters like BFBC2 and COD, where it makes sense in the game's underlying narrative for a sniper rifle to be a one shot kill.

From the perspective of this being a video game it makes less sense, however there's not much you can do. Really if you can't escape snipers in BFBC2 then go play a game that doesn't pander to the immature need to play a game with real guns. I.e. TF2. Snipers there can still be annoying when they camp and bodyshot however really those kind of snipers aren't much of an issue. As for the pro ones... well they ARE annoying but the game is never boring for it.

If on the other hand you stick to your convictions and actually enjoy the realism of games like BFBC2 then I suggest you change your play style. Just because you have an automatic weapon doesn't mean you should play on automatic, running around in a sniper's FOV trying to find a guy to kill at point blank range in a manly "firefight". Move from cover to cover, keep your eyes peeled and flank.

I played a lot of Battlefield 2142 and I can safely say that at least in that "realistic" game the recons behaved more like what I'd think real infantrymen would while the "assault" classes played like what I think real idiots would look like. The best assault guys I saw played like snipers, staying hidden even while capping and actually clearing the area before they sat down next to a missile silo. Rather than just taking a quick look around and then squatting down confident their big gun would be able to deal with anything that came their way.

Of course pro recons would also stealth into the middle of a base and go to town RDX hopping so it's not like snipers have it all their own way in terms of intelligence.

It depends on the Game really how much Fun i would have with a Sniper.

For example, this little game called Black Hawk Down, which is basicly another Delta Force Installment from Novalogic had a great Way to actually be a sniper, although it was challenging to try. You had basicly two Options, either you camp on a Roof, snipe down into the Streets but risk being either "backstabbed" or simply shot down, because your Range is still within their Range as well. Of course changing Position to another is fairly easy and you have Cover most of the Time.

The Second Option is, going very far out, and i mean, like 800 Meters or more from the Center of the Map. Depending on the Map this is good and bad. You cant snipe into the "Town" for example if there are alot of Buildings, so you are forced to pick off anyone you can see from whereever you sat down. Changing Positions takes time, indeed even getting that far out, on foot i might add, takes at least about 5-8 Minutes from the start of the Game. a Round has a limit of 30 Minutes. So moving from one side of the "Town" to the other takes about 10 Minutes again, because you have to Circle a lot of Distance. On the plus Side, if you are good with your Sniper, you manage to hit a moving Target 800 Meters and more away from you with one Shot, you have to factor in that the Bullet needs to travel to them, so just "pointing" on the Enemy makes you miss unless they stand perfectly still from the Moment you pull the Trigger and the Bullet hits the Target, which is about 1-3 Seconds. Therefore when they are moving you have to "hold ahead" their Way to hit them in which they can also simply change Direction by a few Steps, making you miss. It is however interesting in terms of Sniper vs Sniper, when you basicly looking at every Hill and such for that black little Spot, which is the Head of another Sniper. Usually also at least 500 Meters away from whereever you are.

In Combat Arms though it is also Fun, though mainly i play No-Scope. I can Quick-scope, i can also Scope and Wait for a good Shot, but when it comes to close Combat, which especially in Sniper Only Games is fun, then No-Scoping the other Guy is incredibly fun, especially since you have no Cross Hair at all telling you how much your next shot might spread.

So yes, depends on the Game and to a degree the Player, but a Camper will always camp, no matter which Weapon he has. And a sniper rifle is for me a prefered Method opposed to using a Grenade or Rocket Launcher.

There are 2 kinds of snipers I hate:
Really good snipers that never miss a headshot, and snipers that only care about KD ratio and ignore the objective.
When they combine, it makes me rage!

A good sniper is actually something quite terrifying, just as in real life. Much like a good tank (player/character type, not vehicle, in this particular case). But snipers don't usually get epic kill counts because either A) they're hiding, like genuinely hiding and picking people off where they can't easily be found, or B) they get an awesome vantage point and can see the whole field, but that means the whole field can see them and that's not so great.

Besides, it's the same argument for guerilla warfare- instead of two armies lining up to march at each other head-on, it's whatever works the best. Anyone can pick up a sniper rifle and make life hard for the other team. Including you/your team. And besides, if someone's good with a sniper, I guess that means you better learn how to adapt. Or maybe they're just beast, like the people who get perfect games anyways.

I very much disagree. Sniping isn't as easy in tf2, and that's good. That being said, in small games (4v4 - 8v8), the difference can be seen between sniper and non. I still can't think of a game that's better because of snipers.

Insert promo for Urban Terror. Where the guy standing still gets killed. Instantly. I'm serious, the game is mostly CQC maps where the idea is to keep moving. Try to camp and you will be flanked very quickly. For those of us who like snipeing there are maps desinged for this, however it is immossible to dominata a game like this. Even if you snap everyone you see with a headshot you will only get a maximum of 20 kills (40 if you forgo secondary weapons and 'nades and take extra ammo) before you run out of bullets and will have to loot corpses or respawn.

{relises he has written extremly biased article)

(doesn't care)
