I'd say the only game that did snipers well was TF2. The problem with snipers is that they just break flow. What's the point of charging out and taking down scores of enemies only to be headshotted by someone way beyond killing range? It doesn't help that your typical sniper is a smug, self-satisfied asshole taking potshots.
TF2 snipers could have easily been countered by other snipers, or better yet, the spies. Additionally, they were absolutely no good when the enemies have already made their advance, prompting the use of the Huntsman, which allowed them to fight it out on the front lines. The aforementioned smug, self-satisfied asshole may accumulate kills by hiding cowardly behind the big guns, but they won't help shit with making an advance on the enemy unless they really take the initiative as a sniper. I'd say it's much more intuitive than the stupid competitive point-and-click adventureless games where your survivability is based on luck.
