"What is it you want to talk about mom?" Garrus asked as he was led behind the APC. Major Crime and Patriot gave each other a worried look, both men moving away from the APC.
Camille didn't speak initially, giving herself some time to figure out what she was going to say. "Son," she started, "There are many things I haven't told you or your brother. And I knew I should have told you sooner, but I kept pushing it back saying the both of you weren't ready...and now for all I know I might not get the chance to tell it to my youngest."
Garrus waited for his mother to continue, kicking some rocks that were by his feet.
"What do you remember about your father?" she asked him, confusing him with the question.
"Uh his name was Roman Arreos. He was a doctor for a long time. Err, was older than you. Was very nice to me. Spoiled us," Garrus replied.
Camille nodded, before telling her son everything. "Your father was Dr. Kismet. Roman and I met at the Battle of St. Peter's Bridge. Major Crime had called upon him to help when the Society was about to defeat Major; the two of them were best friends way before Major ever became a bad guy. Roman used a powerful spell, killed every single hero who was there...except me. He told me that he felt connected to me after he took care of me whilst I healed, and that he didn't want to see me pass at such a young age.
We fell for each other. I didn't tell anyone in the Society about us. I simply left it once I learned I was pregnant with you. But...one day Collin and I had lunch together, just two old friends chatting... and I told him who I was with. I told him not to tell anyone, and I trusted he wouldn't," she paused before stating, "I should have never trusted him. He told Chief Justice who was the leader at the time. You see back then and even now relationships like that are greatly frowned upon, and so Chief Justice decided to make an example of it."
"If Leland hadn't have been in the hospital for that flu, and if I wouldn't have taken you with me to check up on him I would have lost everything that day. I didn't know who had killed your father and sister, but I knew who did. I interrogated Collin on it until he gave me names, and once I got those I hunted down each and every single one of my own comrades. They all said the same thing before the end, that it was my fault.
And you know what happened after that. And now you know why I was so apprehensive about you joining them. Things have changed since then, and I know you love being a member of the Society. Just...you needed to know this and I needed to tell you," she finished wiping her eyes and putting a hand Garrus' shoulder. He was completely stunned, and couldn't muster up any words. He took a seat against the APC, a shocked look still on his face as he stared at the ground.
"I'll give you some time alone," Camille told him, wiping her eyes once more before leaving him to sit and think.
