In Jet Set Willy you could get stuck in 'infinite death loops', whereby you'd respawn above a deadly pit or somesuch.
And is what made it really hard? (As opposed to being just hard) It just sounds like crappy respawn systems. That's not a qualification for difficulty in my book, it's a qualification for the developers to receive a kick.

LoL at all the people who have never played Metal Gear Solid on the highest difficulty setting.

Super Ghost and Ghouls actually isn't that hard, it kills you because it makes you think you have to double jump all the time to avoid enemies or obstacles, where in fact you do not and the double jump just gets you killed.

I would've thought that list would've been populated entirely by NES games.

I would've put the Ninja Turtles game for the NES on that list instead...
Second! The respawn rate of enemies in that game was insane. As soon as their position scrolled off screen and then back on screen, the enemy would respawn.

Dante must die was the one where everything died in a single hit, right? I found that easier than the regular game, to be honest. People panic too much with that difficulty and make stupid mistakes, then getting angry at the game for putting that pressure on them.
No, no, that was Heaven or Hell. On DMD, demons have Devil Trigger, they 4 times as hard to kill and have special moves that are not available in lower difficulties. Like the reaper, being able to transport up to 5 times in a row (basically, in DMD, that's ALL he does whenever you meet him).

Something harder than that would be DMC 4 Hell and Hell mode. You can guess what that was.

Ninja Gaiden isn't that bad. It's just a really bad shock when the first few bosses (or all of them) kick your ass over and over again the first few times. After a while, your skills (hopefully) amp up considerably and the upgraded weapons help a lot. This applies much less so for the higher difficulties though, which stay difficult throughout. Same goes for Devil May Cry 3. DMD mode is less freakishly hard than Ninja Gaiden Master Ninja, probably because Dante is more powerful in relation to the enemies (and has worthwhile guns). They're probably okay to be on the list, but Ninja Gaiden doesn't deserve top spot.

IWBTG deserves a spot.

Ikaruga is probably justified (I've only played the demo though). I'd assume the polarity thing is mind bending in later levels. It probably isn't as bad as Mushihime-sama though. That one just seems 10 times more mind bending in a brute force kind of way. It's not as pretty though.

Why is MGS up there? It doesn't belong. Does this list assume you're playing on max difficulty? That would give more credibility to several of the examples.

I think gametrailers.com made a little bit more accurate list. Just my opinion though.

Well, i've not played any of those, so I truly have no idea as to how difficult any of them might actually be.

None of these are as hard as 'You have to burn the rope', most frustratingly hard game anyone has ever played.

Try it yourself, and be humbled.

Metal Gear on Extreme to get No Alerts, That IS difficult. In fact on normal, I found the game challenging, and I played it recently! And having Demons Souls there just makes me want it more! IT'S A DAMN CHALLENGE TO MY GAMING PROFILE!

Calumon: What about Mushihimesama?

the second phase of that fight is 3 times worse, look it up.

-I find it insulting that they placed Ikaruga right next to DMC 3 on a difficulty list.
Given, Dante Must Die mode was a challenge, I spent a lot less time running through there than I did clearing Ikaruga without using the infinite credits option. (And don't even get me started on beating it without dieing even once)

-If whoever wrote that list decided that Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts for the SNES was hard, he obviously never played Ghosts 'n Goblins, or the arcade version of said SNES game. Not to mention Ultimate Ghosts 'n Goblins.

-While everyone's top 10 will look a bit different and complaining about someone else's opionin is a bit silly, there's plenty of games I'm missing.

Metal Slug 3 anyone?

What are the condition for this?

Is it hardest over all or hardest with selectable difficulty?

It would really count if it was easy on everything except super hard modes.

Also from what I remember DMC3 I think was broken by them making the wrong difficulties in the US/PAL versions they where one higher than they should have been making normal hard and hard extra hard ect, so its should be disqualified by being broken by the guys translating it fucking up.

No, Battletoads should be on top, if you throw in a enemy that you cant get away from and you die from him every time in the first 2 minutes, thats a hard fucking game.

And dont even start about level 2.

For "developers" you really mean "some guy in his bedroom". The game pre-dates the videogame industrial complex.

I might be wrong about this, but I think said bedroom-coder actually admitted that JSW is in fact impossible to complete, so really it should be at the top of the list.

No Crystal Quest? Fuck that list. It's a list of "10 Hardest Games Besides Crystal Quest Because We're Too Lazy To Do Our Research And Find Crystal Quest".

No one has ever beaten the original Crystal Quest, OK? Like Pacman, it has 255 levels. Like Pacman, they increase in difficulty, although the increase is exponential. I've heard of people supposedly reaching 150, but anything over 120 hasn't been confirmed.
