It's happened to all of us. We're going through a high quality game that we really enjoy and then, out of nowhere, BLAM we socked across the face with an incongruous boos fight, seemingly tossed out like so much wet refuse. Two titles of recent that immediately come to mind are Mass Effect 2 and Batman Arkham Asylum. Why does this happen and in what games has it happened to you? Are end bosses really necessary? What do you think would make a better boss fight or what makes a good boss fight? Tell us what you think.

As I've said before, Ganondorf in Ocarina of Time

He's made out to be the biggest and baddest mother fucker of all time who was able to conquer the land of Hyrule while the knights of the castle fell beneath his awesome power and you are the only hope left.

Then I beat him without getting hit once. Yeah, so scary. Either everyone in Hyrule is a fucking pussy or Ganon lost his touch in the 7 years Link was away.

Hell, half of the bosses were more difficult than him.

How did you not see the AA boss fight coming? there was fireworks for petes sake.

Anyway i'd say lost planet 2. Throughout the whole game its building up to this boss fight and its actually pretty easy.

Boss fights (especially end boss fights) are outdated and need to be gotten rid of.

They're hardly ever done well, and often reverse everything you've learnt in the game. Looking at your example of Arkham Asylum:

You have amazing combat abilities, a system that - with a few tweaks in the end game (I know I'm breaking the rule I've just pointed out) - could lead to amazing and brutal balls-to-the-walls fist fight with Joker. Instead you dodge him then pull him down then hit him. Repeat 3 times, job done.

ME2's wasn't bad, it just gave you waves - it was hardly inspiring, but it didn't break it's own gameplay of the last 30 hours.

EDIT: Sorry! Hope I fixed that spoiler tag in time.

End boss in Bionicle Heroes. I never expected much (I only got the game cause it was an easy 1000 gamerscore) but the end boss rides on top of a huge spider-thing so it could have been at least a little challenging. My 7-year old cousin would have gotten bored of it.

I always find it strange that he's repeatedly named one of the hardest bosses of all time. He's such a freakin' push over. His ghost form that jumps in and out of paintings in the Forest Temple was far harder than he was.

OT: The ending of Half-Life 2. Might not qualify as a boss fight, but still. Quite lame.

There are a few modern games that dont really have a end boss fight that i really enjoy (Fallout 3) Boss fights are not a necessity.

Mario, mostly:

OH NO! IT'S BOWSER!

*runs past and hits switch*

...

Someone actually thought this was challenging?!

ALTHOUGH I love the bosses in Metroid 3 so far, but haven't got to the final (I'm just about to get there) - I really hope Dark Samus isn't a disappointment.
IT FUCKING ISN'T

Assassins Creed (teh first one). Hold R1, press [], pfft, dead.
Doesnt matter what sort of weapon or armour or frowny face the enemy has R1 and [] and dead.

Counter attacks just work.

Human Reaper in ME2. I saw it, was amazed, then killed it very, very quickly.
I kept expecting the game to go on longer.

@ ucciolord1

You might want to put that in a spoiler box but I know just what you mean.

Seconded the above.

Sin in FFX. By the time I got to him I was so painfully over-leveled that I blew him away in a matter of minutes. The ONLY thing that prolonged that fight was the fact he has an unnecessarily large amount of health. Seymour Flux, Evrae, and Yunalesca were a hell of a ton harder than him.

Pretty much any handheld Zelda final boss once they got on the GBA and DS.

Xemnas in Kingdom Hearts II. Xaldin and Xigbar were so much harder and more frustrating than he was.
Marluxia and Xehanort's heartless on the GBA version of Chain of Memories, simply because Riku Replica (the third time) slaughtered me more times than I cared to count. I swear they made him easier on the PS2.. or maybe it's just the fact the screen isn't so painfully tiny.
