Threads like these are exactly why girl gamers get a fuss - as well as things like Gamer Chix and the over sexualisation of girl gamers such as the bland Jessica Chobot who landed on all fours licking a PSP.

That's why the consumers react in the manner that they do, because the whole industry provokes it. For the most part media tells people their opinions - a lot of people are too lazy to make their own informed opinions. A blanket statement I know, and hopefully one that won't apply to anyone reading this - because you are hopefully here to broaden your mind and understanding of varying topics.

So understand this - remove the segregation, remove the fuss, enable the equalisation.

But I don't think girls want to remove the fuss, they want the attention. Like those whores on Saturday nights who wear next to nothing and cry bloody murder when a sex-depraved weekend lurker stares at them. Another blanket statement I know, but you'll be gone when the attention falls away and another drone will take your place, ready to "fight the good fight".

This comes across as a little hate filled, and I apologise for that. Better to be concise then beat around the (your) bush.
I agree, except on the girls wanting attention part. See, the only attention I get is "GIRL?" or the guys pick a fight with me because hell I'm a girl and they think they can. I've even had guys team kill me for shits and giggles because I'm a girl. I've had American fellas call me "apple pie" wtf?!?! Why would I want that sort of annoying attention when all I want to be able to do is play a friendly game? I understand some might but there are those of us who genuinely don't want that sort of shit, it's just annoying and a hassle.

Well I honestly do feel bad for you but, alas I'm a guy so I'm not sure I should really say anything.

Do you ever see a facebook page or overhear a conversation where a girl is professing her love for games, but you can just feel in the pit of your stomach that it's put on for whatever reason? It just gives you a sense of painful embarrasment.

It was amusing when my ex was round one day, spilling her guys about how Mario Kart was such a big part of her gaming ways. When I cracked out the old N64 for a bash on Rainbow Road, I might as well have put a dead squid in her hands instead of a controller, the way she was looking at it.

This kind of "girl gamer" being more prevalent as far as I've experienced, combined with the fact a stupidly vast majority of people I play online with a guys, I do still get an involuntary feeling of surprise when I encounter a chick genuinely enjoying a game. I do sometimes wonder what it is about the hobby that gives it such a huge majority with regards to a male fanbase?

My classmate is even more hardcore gamer as me. And a girl. And probably better at any shooter then I will ever get.

I don't mind. I encourage this. Yet the saying "There are no girls on the internet" is there for a reason. How often has it happened someone pretends to be a girl? I mean.. Sigh, it's not even funny anymore. :p

But yay for girl gamers!

My girlfriend and I are both game nerds. Shit, for about the last year or so, SHE'S probably sunk more hours in than I have. We both hate multiplayer, so we generally just try to split screen co-op games when we want to play together. Aside from that, we have separate consoles and separate televisions in our living room to get down on all the gaming goodness.

To be honest, I don't care if other female gamers exist because I've found the only one I need.

I'm tired of every Girl gamer acting like they're the last of their kind, demanding special attention. When I meet a girl gamer on LIVE she goes 'betcha never seen a girl before, oh I pwned you, you got Pwned by a girl!" While she's wearing her obnoxious pink spartan armor and the gamertag XxCutieGirlxX.

OP: There is such a fuss surrounding gamer girls because the gamer girls aren't letting it go. They like the attention.
This nicely sums up my feelings, if you play games why even bring attention to what's between your legs?

I never got why there was such a fuss about girl gamers. I mean I understand that there are stereotypes and people abide by them, I just don't know why. =|

I'm a girl and I like gaming. These are two separate things, so I'd rather not be singled out by either male gamers being creepy or elitist, or female gamers trying to be feminists.

Because most boys who devote their life to games or regularly post on an internet forum are friendless virgins who can't wrap their minds around the idea that there are women that are equal or greater than them on the world stage, or they're just pretentious assholes (i.e. me) who want to display their knowledge of the hippocampus.

:Edit: For those who'll quote me, I don't give a shit if you don't like what I said. So save the whine.
D; But what if I agree entirely, what do I do then?

The Truth About Girl Gamers

So, Fellow Escapees, this is my first time posting a thread, but I feel it will provide a valid insight into both your minds, and the ever long issue of girl gamers. I keep reading these articles such as "Riot Grrrls Wanted" and "235. Vaginophobia" on the escapist website, and I just really do wonder about the Myth of the Elusive Girl Gamer, and what people think about it.

Personally, every guy I meet, whether whilst gaming online, or in the real world, either think the fact that I'm a girl gamer is too good to be true, or just don't take me seriously. Maybe this fact causes fewer girls to play online. Or maybe the girls just aren't playing the same games as you, so you don't realise they are out there! Also, I know one of my female friends doesn't like using a mic online because people think she is a prepubescent boy :\ Also a lot of the girl gamers out there were probably introduced to it by their boyfriends. Just Saying. I just believe that there must be more girl gamers than guys believe there are, or who get given credit for.

The truth is, we are out there, but you probably won't notice us, because our gamertags aren't like "FluffyBunnyGirl" or "GirlPwnsYou" or whatever.. And I personally don't fit the girl gamer stereotype of Cooking Momma and Barbie Ponies, with Guitar Hero being a step up! I am an expert at guitar hero and play a range of Xbox 360 games from Left 4 Dead and Gears of War to Too Human and Fable. Hell, I've even spent 30 hours straight playing my Xbox like a deranged fool.

Basically what I wanna know is: why is there SUCH a fuss surrounding the topic of girl gamers; how elusive they are and such, and, girl gamers, I want your opinions on this because I know you know exactly what I mean.

I just really want to know what you guys think!

UPDATE: i honestly believe im a gamer who just happens to be a girl. and i agree with the attention seeking. it annoys me.
Girls? Playing VIDEOGAMES?!? Sorry, but this just isn't so.

Girls are less competetive, they don't play the real games. You know RTS, Ego-Shooter etc. They might play Single Player stuff, Popcap-style-games, nintendoish games, RPG and that stuff.

Of course there are exceptions. But I am pretty sure, over 95% of the people who play Starcraft, Halo, Counterstrike are male.

/edit: And I appreciate that there are only a few girls playing "competetive" games. I really hated it in school when "we" (the boys) had sport with girls again. They totally pussified the whole atmosphere, you couldn't push anyone when for example playing football, because it might just be the whiny girl.

I don't find it that big a deal... aside from actually finding one on Live, most girls on there won't ever I.D themselves as such, probably due to the great amount of pricks I have had the "pleasure" to encounter on there.
