The Orange Box. Or more specifially, Portal. A friend told me about it and I thought it sounded awesome, so I bought the Orange Box and have been somewhat obsessed with gaming ever since. I did play video games before this, but I wouldn't really consider myself a 'gamer' before the Orange Box. It motivated me to buy other Valve games and eventually a PS3.

First game? I would say that Tales of Phantasia was THE game that got me into other games, but I did play other games casually like Gradius, SF II, Contra, Sonic, and etc. before but was never introduced to a game with story and as much background.

I didn't play games for very long, or with as much feeling, and I didn't even try to pay attention to the plot line until The Legend of Mana, which I got me into playing games on my own. Not just multiplayer games with my family and friends, but just some me-time.

Oh man i loved legend of mana the only thing that sucked about that game was that some of the missions were so secret or impossible to find without a strategy guide. We had one but it fell apart due to age and the few that you can find on ebay are too expensive.

I played the game last year and it's aged pretty good, too. I probably missed a ton of quests because I didn't use a strategy guide, but I guess that adds to the replay value.

The first copy of it that I had started to wear down, and it wouldn't let me pass the giant stone head (forgot its name), and then the game got sold. I bought my copy two years ago for $20(USD) on eBay, and it was worth it--it came with the box, box art, and instructions manual.

Pokemon yellow for handhelds.
So cute :3 (Age:6-8)

But Medal Of Honor: Rising Sun got me right into FPS's, I dont care about the ratings all I know is that I play an American who has killed a Jap and then put on his clothing and sneaked into a Japanese meeting...and no one notices that im American, total win right there. (Age:10)

RPG's...ugh, I cant remember...darn.(Age:?)

Sandbox's, GTA's Vice City, eat my minigun...bwhahaha (Age:12 yrs old here)

RTS: Age Of Empires 2 (Age:9)

Pretty good starters I think.

I could lie, or I could really say what it was and proceed to get trolled by half the forum. The game that got me into gaming was the original halo. I didn't have xbox live, I just played single player. At the time I really enjoyed the game, so much so that I could just play it over and over and over.

I also played Pokemon a hell of a lot as a kid, so that was probably another. Total I played more then 2000 hours of it over my childhood. I think I had a Pokemon sapphire save that had something like 800 hours on it...

Spyro the goddamn dragon. The first one, with the gimmicky polygonal lettering. The first game I can remember playing and beating. I almost got to 100%, and would have if it weren't for those flying sections I just couldn't 100% complete. And then we lost the memory card. But I still played the game, and I'm certain almost everyone here has heard of the story of how I speedran it in four hours over and over again.

I would mow down crowds of kittens to get to the entire trilogy, with compatible console and memory card. I would probably do the same if it were Katamari Damacy, but that's off-topic.
So how much did the PS2 games sting considering how much they sucked?

Earliest game I can remember playing is Super Mario 64, though I may have those memories confused with Legend of Zelda: OOT or even Goldeneye. I got into gaming at a glance.

EDIT: Rogue Squadron was my favourite game of that time, so i guess I'll go with that.

Well... The first game I remember to enjoy playing would be an old platformer called Pandemonium I think... But that was only as a timewaster... What really got me into gaming, and that I still replay to this day and age, was Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time... I really love that game.

The original Doom game. I remember playing it when I was five. My father put in the god mode cheat and I would run around with a chainsaw carving everything in my path while laughing hysterically. Totally did not mess me up as I got older. :p Good memories.

Geez, I never really played a lot of BAD videogames. I have about 25 games in my PS2 library, and I enjoyed all but one of them. If you've seen some of my recent posts, you will know which game I am talking about.

I played some games on the N64 which weren't too great (I only had, like, three), but the first real game I got into was probably Animal Crossing on the Gamecube when I was... seven? I don't even know. I remember me and my sister constantly renting it from Blockbuster, then leaving the console on all the time when we had it because we didn't have a memory card big enough to support the game, so we couldn't time travel. It took us two months of doing this just to finally get the game, which we were overjoyed to see came with a memory card. I bought a DS just to get Wild World, and dropped that thing down more flights of stairs than I've walked, if that's possible. Was psyched for City Folk, that sucked. And now I plan to get a 3DS around Christmas when the price goes down, just for the new one. I don't know why, I was just so enthralled with the series. Looking back I don't even think they were that good. I nostalgia'd harder then I EVER have when I watched the E3 video for the new one. Kinda sad I lost Wild World. I think that one was the best simply, not because of what it added, but that you could take it on the go, and that's where that kind of game belongs, I remember that chewing up a lot of hours, walking around the mall or in car rides. I walked into a lot of people at the mall. After that, once I decided that I really liked video games, I got the GBA and another of my favorite games to this day, Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga. It was like an RPG but with Mario, but I gave Luigi all the nice clothes and badges because I liked him better, and always had him walk in front. *sigh* They just don't make games like that anymore.
After reading all that, I feel old. Thx, thx a lot. (/sarcasm)
Well, doesn't that mean you're a little too old to be saying "Thx" instead of "Thanks"?
I come here and open up, and you just are rude to me because you're bitter. That wasn't very nice.

I played Jazz Jackrabbit 2 as a kid on my old PC. Great game, like a combo of Sonic the Hedgehog and Mega Man.

Sonic The Hedgehog. I had play plenty of games before it but that one is what cemented me as a gamer and turned it into a major hobby.
