Mitsurugi is a dangerous choice though. Against people that know what they're doing he is weak against fast quick character & long rangers. Personally I find he is the best at mid-range but you have to totally control the pace of the game with him otherwise you're fragged. But then I've been playing SC games for almost a decade!
Well the problem with 4 is how easy they've made it to grab, as stated I play with Volvo and Mitsurugi is a pain because hes fast, has easy combos and powerful moves. Sometimes I can barely get near him...and don't even get me started on Kilik...I've now played Soul Calibur's 1 - 4 but still cannot deal with move spammers =(

I had this problem in Soul Calibur 4. Everyone online plays as Kilik because its easy to string combos by just jamming buttons. Funny thing is, when they actually come up against a competent Kilik player (i.e. Me) they have no idea what is going on. Learn the more difficult combos, and any masher will have a tough time touching you.
Me and my brother have been playing Soul Calibur for 9 years in various formats. His best is Kilik and mine is Mitsurugi. You have to know your shit to stop a good Kilik player from slaughtering you. I definitely agree with you though, watching him play Kilik vs. Kilik online is frankly hilarious against the poor button mashing fools on the other end.
True. I consider myself an expert Setsuka player, but I still can barely hold my own against a really good Kilik. She just doesn't have the range (well, she has a few dive/lunge attacks that are useful, but still not quite enough). Kilik's more advanced are quick, powerful, and they have so many variations that it's difficult to be prepared.
Too bad there aren't many beginner Setsukas online, those are fun to slaughter.
It's probably worth pointing out at this point that the reason I started playing with Mitsurugi is that he's a Samurai and I've thought they're awesome since the age of 12. I'd pick Sigfried (because I love knights) if it wasn't for the boyish good looks thing he's saddled with. I stayed with him because I got good. Also loved Hwang from 2.

I know what you mean about Street Fighter 4. Ken/Ryu is all you ever see-- I've been playing Cammy despite my friends' insistence that she's "one of the shittiest characters."
Who cares if she's shitty when she looks like that :D

One of my friends does this. He's a competent player but doesn't take the time to learn the more intricate combos. So when he goes to do the tower of lost souls it's funny to watch... or against me playing as Talim or Tira.

In any case, when people ask "what's the best?" like that it just shows one of 2 things. Either laziness, in the way that they cannot be bothered to go and test out the various options open to them(part of what makes a game fun, I might add) or just a lack of initiative where they figure if the most popular option works for so many people it must work for them. Then they complain when they can't get to grips.

The best character is the one that a player has taken the time to get to grips with, decided they liked it and so worked to learn every move they can pull off with them to be the best.

I think it just shows that a lot of people are intensely competitive and will use cheap tactics to avoid losing at any cost.

I don't really care if I lose a game as long as I had fun :)

I think with SFIV there's probably a case of familiarity. Every gamer knows how to sling a fireball.
I don't... :(

I also don't like the stigma against people who use things considered "n00by" or "cheap", people shouldn't take gaming seriously, gaming is not a sport, never will be.

The ironic part is that there usually is no best.

There may be a fastest, or a strongest, or a powerful-at-long-range, or a best close-range brawler...

etc...

Also, looking for a "best" strategy or character or weapon simply removes the entertainment of the game. I guess I enjoy making due with what I have more than just getting something that makes the whole game easy and noncompetitive.

It doesn't just ruin online fun, it ruins offline fun too, depending on the people you know and what they look for in a game. :/

The "what's the best" people actually give more online fun in MMOs, as they tend to miss the point and lose horribly to everyone else. It is always somewhat amusing to see this happen as an observer.

Well, I personally use Ken as my best character too but i rotate a lot to add fun. It's often the underdog, or character that people aren't used to fighting against that has advantage, so better for the advanced veteran who can use multiple characters.

Out of 20 matchs I have played on Street fighter 4, 17 of them were against ken, 1 against akuma and the last one was against ryu.
Don't mean to be a *****, but 17+1+1 isn't 20.

I play how I want to play all the time. Metagaming is lamer than hell and will always be lame. It's the biggest reason why RTS are boring after the first month. It's the reason why CoD4 dulls me to death. It's all snoozy stuff.

The worst experience of this kind of thing I've ever had was while I was still playing Warhammer online.

Joined a Nordenwatch scenario on my destruction char and took a quick look at the scoreboard, only to see 10 of the 12 order players were all playing the most horribly overpowered and unbalanced ( at the time ) class in the game - Bright Wizard.

Welcome to the world of competitive gaming.

If it doesn't KO something in less than average hits, it is worthless.
If it kills in one hit, it is overpowered.
If it has less than 100% accuracy, it is a luck skill and should be banned.
If it can not be blocked, it is overpowered.
If the terrain is something other than a flat surface, it is considered unbalanced.

However playing against the same character all the time is great, you only need to learn how to counter/dodge a few attacks and using a different character yourself gives you a massive advantage.

Well, I play how I want in games, whether its good or not...Looking at you Morrowind, trying to force me into taking Long Blade with that massive 15 bonus to Redguards...

But I hate people who will use cheap tactics/glitches to be the best. If you want to be use the best stuff in a game, use it fairly.

I have noticed an unusually large amount of people using the silenced P90's/MP5's and snipers in Call of Duty 4. While i myself use the M40 sniper with an acog scope I only do so because of the extra challenge it brings to the game.

in COD4 everyone seems to use the M16, Martyrdom, M16 grenade launcher or 3x frags, and stopping power.

In Halo 3, everyone uses the Hyabusa armor and/or goes for the sniper.

In Gears 1 all people do is rush with the shotgun

In Counter Strike: Scource most people use the magnum sniper, its a 1 hit kill.

There are others but its basically the same, everyone uses/goes for the same thing

I do too. Also, I think Ryu/Ken suck. They are way to "ridged." I like to play as Sakura, It makes me feel cool when I beat someone and she is way looser.
