This is a problem that is very common in MMO's, where alot of people choose to play the game after how others play it instead of how they want to play it, min-maxing its called (i think), and i think its just retarded.

Its very common in WoW where almost everyone at max level play the way everyone else does because they can get a little more dmg/healing out of it, which isnt the way you're supposed to play the game, and i've never ever fallen for it (unlike my friends), i always choose my own speccs/gear from the way i want to play, i dont care if i go from nr. 1 in dps to nr. 6 as long as i think its a fun way to play the game.
Indeed - damage metres were the worst introduction to WoW - turned everything around.

i feel that people want to start of any game iwth an edge of the best stuff so they can win, But the best people can use anyhting and still be good. first in Super smash I use luigi which is considered one of the worst characters and still do really well in games and also in COD4 what ever you use you have to experiment what fits you best

My friend Zachary is always like that, he is currently finding out how to kill enemies on,"Monster Hunter Freedom Unite". To give details, he's watching foreign videos on YouTube of people, killing the final boss, with their 'I believe this is the best weapon to use to kill him' attitude. I on the other hand, don't do that, I get what I think I will be good with and go on luck (and Luk,lol). My cousin also does this, but for games that already have come out. He will play online games like maplestory and runescape, in short, he's a perfectionist. He goes on websites just to find out the quickest way to do stuff without cheating or hacking and instead use glitches, and objects to do the stuff for him. On,"Oblivion", my cousin went online and found out a exploit, all he did was wrap a rubber band around the left stick and left it on there during school. I was worried that this may break his controller and his response was,"Eh. I don't care, as long as im getting the level ups, im sure that my dad will just replace it for me." FYI: he's a smug rich bastard that doesn't know the value of a dollar. Ive had the same backpack since third grade and look im still using it in high school.

Translation:I agree and know alot of people that do that

well damage meters do link to threat meters in a way so I could argue against that, but on the principle that they are used to max out your character then i'm with you. Threat meters have saved my back a lot, so without damage meters we might not have threat meters.

Well not entirely, its a very useful tool for progressing end game guilds that dont want to bring people who cant contribute enough damage/healing for hardcore raiding, but there is truely a back-side to it.

Well, on CoD4 (xbox) it was M16, MP5/P90 and M40A3. On CoD5 (xbox) its MP40 or STG44.

I prefer using a gun that feels right or is satisfying to use, such as a double barrelled shotgun and heavy machine guns. Nothing beats blowing peoples legs off.

In Halo 3, everyone uses the Hayabusa armor and/or goes for the sniper.
Umm...how is that armor the best? I thought they had little/no effect besides appearence.
People think they look good in it and are impressing others.
yeah, and after people found out how to get the one skull, every asshole and their mom had the armor and wore it.

really got annoying really fast

That's why I like to do weird character combos in RPGs, like in Fallout, I play a smooth talking diplomat with an affinity to gatling guns, or in Mass Effect, a female technician who uses a shotgun all the time (it's not smart, but it's something I haven't seen before).

it really sucks for guys like me who play Ken honestly; and makes me/people like me look like i'm just jumping on "the winning team" (despite all he does is match my style) when all i'm doing is playing my favored character since the second Street fighter! But ya, that bothers me as well for the same reason as you

One of the things I love about Blizzard is its willingness to nerf a class that's become generally accepted as the "best" by the sorts of people who'd rather use cheese than skill. As a general matter, I think the bitchier the 13-year-olds get about a decision, the better a decision it must inherently have been.

i have run into this crap in call of duty4 and 5, someone asks me what gun to use
i cant respond to them with a good answer, so i point them twards the crappest gun i have personaly have ever used
also this is happened in CoD WaW, someone of the players will ask you in game chat, or if they are really annoying, will mesage me asking about the best places to camp, i can understand camping in the serach and destroy thing, but whats the point in a deathmatch game, someone is going to find you after you kill them, and they will kill you and watch that spot, and the worse part is that most of the time, that same camping dumb*** will go back to that some spot and get killed.

also, i have run into the same problem in street fighter, kinda sucks when someone plays sagat, ken, or ryu, and uses the same move over and over again

i think its an asinine question, and jsut asking it is indictative of a poor player and a person that needs someone to give a yay or nay on what to do.

i think ill open a thred about the camping thing...

For example, when I played Guild Wars my main character was a Necromancer with the secondary profession of Warrior. She didn't have any minion raising skills like what damn near everyone else had, only life stealing spells and close-combat skills. Even after the game has been out for this long a build like this is just completely unheard of. People don't know what to expect of a character like that.
You weren't a barbs warrior were you? They are always so hard to keep alive.

Anyway, Guild Wars seems to be pretty bad with this. As a healing monk, I always got it from the elitists who wouldn't take anything other than a protector monk "because it prevents more damage on paper". Luckily, monks were (and still are) far and few between in PvE, so I can get away with pretty much anythnig short of nothing but res spells.

Another thing that annoyed me a few years ago in GW was when parties would never take a minion master that didn't have a special type of minion for a specific mission. The problem with this was that you can only get the minion immediatly after the mission. What is funny about it now is how everyone says that the same spell sucks.

It kills me how people will use only use stratagies because they're popular. They should think it over for themselves to find something that they like.

In Company of Heroes, people follow the meta gaming trends sooooooo much, it is incredible. Before patches are even released people on forums are already guessing at what's the "best strategy" to use, and about a week or two after a patch the pros all agree on what the most unbalanced things of this patch is, from then on just about everybody in ranked matches will use this unbalanced exploiting strategy and nothing else. Although with the latest couple of patches there are some major meta gaming strategy changes within a single patch...

It's still an excellent game, but it does take away some of the fun when you know exactly what your opponent's build order is within the first 3 mins of a game.

Yeah, I've always preferred Ken to Ryu, but honestly more just from an aesthetic perspective...he's cockier and his fucking fist lights on fire, come on!

But I like switching between characters. Whenever I play Super Smash (except in tournaments, obviously), I ALWAYS switch characters between matches. If I'm not with uber-intense people, I'll even use relatively bad characters like Bowser and Jigglypuff...sometimes with hilarious results (I recently schooled 2 other players with Jigglypuff...got 3 kills with his down+B alone, one of which was in midair, and one guy literally said "i'm ashamed of myself now").

I have little respect for people that spam characters in non-tournament settings, namely those who only use Link, Fox, and Marth, and just noob-stick their way through it. And I mean ONLY.

I know what you mean about Street Fighter 4. Ken/Ryu is all you ever see-- I've been playing Cammy despite my friends' insistence that she's "one of the shittiest characters."
Who cares if she's shitty when she looks like that :D
My point exactly.

I feel all funny when I look at that. Does that make me wierd, Mommy?

I have to admit that THQ and Relic aren't helping matters with their overwhelming sense of Space Marine worship that grows ever more apparent and sickly with each new game that comes out. Hell they couldn't even be arsed to put together a decent movie for the Imperial Guard, Emperor-bothering Sisters and Tau. But yeah... Imperial Guard for me.

....

On a side note, if only the Space Marine players realised that all Space Marines are most likely sterile and only have big guns as compensation.
Well, since game marketing takes an approach similar to movie making, they went with the army/race that people have the most familiarity with. Most people feel more attached to a human faction first, and it draws in new fans faster. So it's not exaclty Space Marine worship as it is people can get the gist of what a giant super-soldier in power armor fights for before they understand the interesting complexity of Eldar, the fun fearless suicide of Orks or the terrifying swarm of the Tyranids.

And you sort of have to know the Space Marines before you appreciate the Imperial Guard and what they have to go through. I know people who won't play Tau because they don't like the "Doing it for the Good of the Race" message in their Codex.

But yeah, I agree. People who play the same thing over and over, or MIN/MAX their RPG characters to "win" kill the fun of many games.

I think with SFIV there's probably a case of familiarity. Every gamer knows how to sling a fireball.
I don't... :(

I also don't like the stigma against people who use things considered "n00by" or "cheap", people shouldn't take gaming seriously, gaming is not a sport, never will be.
Well at the top level gaming requires manual dexterity, fast reaction times and a good fitness. People take Chess seriously, what's the difference between that and starcraft?

I admit, I use Ryu in all street fighters. He's my favorite character so I can't resist (although for a brief bought in Alpha 3 I tried mastering all characters and failed miserably at mastering Cammy.
And sure in Starcraft I like using Protoss (They look the coolest IMO).
But in games like TF2 when a majority of my team is snipers, I'm an engie or a medic trying to keep them alive even though I'm a pyro.
I just play with whatever is comfortable and branch off from there
