Nintendo are just greedy whores. If Microsoft could sell all that horsepower for cheap, why can't Nintendo?
Nintendo's ripping you off because for the same amount of money, they, too, could have the same hardware specs as the 360 and possibly the PS3. But because they don't, they're ripping you off of your money.
Cast your mind back to the last two generations, and how despite offering hardware that was at the least in line with the competition, Nintendo's marketshare continued to shrink. Do you really think, had they taken the Sony/Microsoft path of more power this gen, this would have changed?
And saying they could give you better graphics for the same price is oversimplifying things beyond belief.
About Wii being a rip off: everyone knows Wii is less powerful and doesn't offer HD graphics. We have known this since 2004. If you're fully aware of what you're buying before you part with your money, how exactly is this ripping people off? It's your own damn fault. And if you ran a business that produced a highly popular product, would you really drop the price out of the kindness of your heart, or because a competitor offers their less popular product for a cheaper price? Nintendo is an extremely smart business. Lowering the price when their console is breaking sales records doesn't make smart business sense. Neither does hurting themselves by making a needless loss on hardware sold. This is why they're still around today, and have always remained in profit even when they've been getting destroyed by the competition. Everything they do reflects that, whether you agree with it or not.
Now, it appears I'm defending Nintendo here, so I must be a stupid fanboy, right? I'm simply trying to explain the facts to anyone who apparently can't see them and who's happy to instead make assumptions and baseless claims on what they think is correct.
Anyway, I think I've said all I can say. The Wii has huge potential, but when I look at the current 2009 release schedule, the only good thing I see on the horizon is 2010. I hope things change, but I'm not holding my breath.
Really? This year brings us Mad World, The Conduit, Sin & Punishment 2, Punch Out, Wii Sports Resort, Dead Rising (it's a port, yeah, but it's not a straight port), House of The Dead: Overkill, Another Code: R, a new Sonic, Fatal Frame IV, and Deadly Creatures. Maybe even Monster Hunter Tri, though that's doubtful. There's also news of the new Mario and Zelda games we all know are being worked on. Red Steel 2 is supposed to be in development, and while the first game was lacking this one at least won't suffer from an ever-more-quickly-approaching launch deadline, so there's reason to be hopeful. Retro Studies must be up to something. Then there's No More Heroes 2 at the start of next year. It's also worth keeping in mind Nintendo no longer announces games miles ahead of release, and many other developers seem to do the same thing now (Ubisoft with the new Prince of Persia, for instance). Since E3 downsized and moved to the summer, spring has often brought us information about new games for the last two years. There's no reason why things should be different in 2009.
The "no games on Wii" mentality really gets to me, because it's obvious the people spouting it haven't bothered looking. 2008 was lacking (even though it gave us new installments in three established franchises), but 2009 is a different story. If none of those games appeal to you, then fair enough. Perhaps you should just conclude Wii isn't for you and stop complaining about things. If you've already concluded this, then please explain to me why you are here at all. To try to make others who are happy with their console agree with your opinion? I don't go complaining on Sony boards that there's literally nothing that interests me on PS3. I accept it and don't expect the console to cater specifically to my personal tastes. If I had a PS3 and realised it wasn't for me, I certainly wouldn't keep it. No one's making you keep your Wii. I hear they sell for a decent price secondhand.
I'm not saying Wii is a perfect console. It has a problem, if you look at it from a hardcore point of view, and while I can understand Nintendo's lack of interest in us traditional gamers (again, it is smart business sense) it still angers me and has me worried for the future. But Nintendo's new focus is clear for all to see and has been for some time now. If you're expecting anything else you're fooling yourself. Things aren't going to go back to how they were. The system isn't suddenly going to be flooded by PS3/360-style games. Everyone needs to accept this. Complaining and endlessly pointing out the same stuff achieves nothing.
