That something else is what I have a problem with. We put the instructions on how to find earth in there.
I don't quite understand how they do that but I sort of imagine the aliens trip going something like this:
"We're trying to get to Earth, do you know how to get there?"
"Yeah, yeah, just go 49038823908498953048590834058903 miles in that direction, look for the galaxy with the planets in it. Well...that's an awful way to narrow it down. Just look for the blue and green planet in the "milky way" galaxy with all the morons on it. you'll be right there."
"Oh thanks!"
*Drives away*
"....I f**king hate tourists."

There has never, throughout the whole of human existence, ever been an idea not worth trying. Where the concept of a "bad idea" comes into play is at the point of the game where the inclusion of the idea ends up detrementally effecting the lives/livlihoods of those who bear the weight of the consequences. Example: an ancient Chinese dynasty was overthrown by eunichs (dude, I'd be pissed too), and when Chinas premier explorer returned with information about the outside world, the now in charge eunichs dismantled his ships stating that his treks into the soon to be known were a waste of money.

Using the ships for timber to build infrastructure, saving the money to spend it on internal needs, etc, are NOT bad ideas. It was, however, remarkably short-sighted, as the Chinese would have had a major head start on colonization over the Europeans, and odds are we'd be China right now.

Point is, the dumb things that humanity does cannot be judged as a "what", but most certainly the "how", "when", "where", and "why". Nukes are not a bad idea. The effects they have over the world now are born from bad ideas on how to handle them. Religion is not a bad idea, but plenty of bad ideas have been born original concept of religion. The Wheel is a great idea, until you're one of the unfortunates who had your limbd threaded through the spokes and then systematically broken. "Peace" rocks. "Peace through superior fire power"...less so.

The glass is only interesting because it has something in it, and therefore ideas cannot be all bad as we humans live for our brains to decipher the meaning of them.

I'd have to say the worst idea ever is using hybrid cars. It's just they're dumb and only use battery power when idle.

What about religion? The deaths that have been caused by religion pale in comparison to communism. (I won't even get on the part that communism has been around for a tiny fraction of that of religion as well).

I can cite exact numbers if you wish of the deaths caused by Communist countries vs the biggest atrocities of religion. Let me know if you want to try this argument with me, you will lose, the numbers are there.

What are those numbers? I believe you I just want to write then down somewhere for next time I get in an argument about this stuff.
Here you go...

Probably been said before this point but, Religion
Yes it has. Time and again by kids who have taken up with the current fad of trying to tear down religions. Read [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/jump/18.93880.1461976].

Although it is interesting to compare the deaths caused by communism and the deaths cause by societies such as the British/French/Belgian etc Empires of the first half of the twentieth century. These societies were very much not communist but they killed many millions of people (especially the British Empire)
just for the record, I'm from Belgium and I'm pretty sure we never had an empire

2. I don't remember who said it but nuclear power isn't a clean energy source

3. communism is a good idea, it's just that people are easily corrupted and that's why communisme can't work in our society

4. religion is a very bad idea, because the majority of the wars of humanity are based on religion
You might want to ask the people of the Congo about the Belgian Empire. I'm sure they'll be happy to tell you all about it

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Belgian_Congo
you call that an empire? There was 1 colony and we never killed any people their, they killed themselves, we actually tried to help, learn your history!!

the worst idea humanity has ever spawned was a poem, which incidentally was also the worst bit of poetry in the universe. The very worst poetry in the universe was written by Paula Nancy Millstone Jennings of Sussex. Thankfully it was destroyed when the earth was.

Thing is, it's going to take hundreds of years for that thing just to get outside our Solar System. By the time the Voyager probes reach the outskirts of the Sol system, we will have developed further technologically speaking and we'll be even more capable of defending ourselves. If alien life does exist, there's not even any gurantee that they'll pick it up, or if they do, they may not be as technologically advanced as us. They may not have achieved space travel yet, whereas we have. A common misconception among theories about alien life, fuelled a lot by popular fiction, is that any aliens will be intelligent, as technologically advanced as us (or more so), bipedal and/or humanoid, and so on. None of these are likely (if alien life does exist experts agree that it is most likely to be some sort of insect style creature). Therefore the idea isn't really as stupid as one may think.

As for the stupidest thing mankind has ever done, I would have to go with US and UK politicians over the past ten years. Simple as that.
it left our solar system in the 80's... or perhaps earlier.
