The Xbone is being targeted at people who watch TV but are too lazy to use a TV remote. They might actually save some money if they cut out all of the game parts of the console and just release the Xbone as a TV surfing box with a webcam-microphone and subscription fee. And gamers won't mind because we still have the PS4 and PC.

The target audience of Call of Duty. The entitled, preppy fratboys who only own an Xbox to play Madden and Call of Duty anyway. The ones who get whatever they want out of mommy and daddy's checkbook. They don't buy used games anyway, because they buy Call of Duty and Madden as soon as they come out. They cease playing old games when the new ones are released, so backwards compatability won't matter. They don't give a single shit about Indie games. And they'd prefer a multimedia machine instead of a gaming console, because they only play two games on it anyway.
Excuse me mate, might I ask what the hell this crap is that you're dribbling onto my screen?

I'm not a fan of either of those franchises, but I feel the need to call you out on your bullshit all the same.

I mean, could you stereotype any harder if you tried?

Hmm, maybe I should give it a try:

Man, get a load of those RPG players. A pack of sad nerds that have to pretend that they're dragon-slaying badasses and insist on games with zero resemblance to the real world because anything else would just remind them that they're sexually undesirable losers with no friends, amiright? Eh? Eh?

Oh, and don't get me started on people who play indie products. They're clearly all just pretentious snobs who play games that they don't actually understand for the sole reason of being able to claim that it makes them better than the rest of us.

JRPG players? Please. They're just there to masturbate over the inevitable looks-underage-but-is-really-18-no-really, outgoing, whacky and uninhibited young girl character.

...

Man, this offensive stereotyping thing is fun. I can see why you do it.
All of those including the person you're quoting seem accurate of the majority. Sure, there are exceptions, particularly with the indie thing as it doesn't really mean anything anyways. Not made by a huge company, woopdy fucking doo. The pretentious snobs are just the ones who go throwing 'indie' around like it's a buzzword as if it somehow automatically makes things better.

Agreed that no backwards compatibility, always-internet and that bull they pulled about used games sucks, but everything else is just... average? EVERY new console gets its own controller, dude. PS3s work with PS3 controllers, not PS2 or PS ones. I know it's pointless seeing as they're all the same, but this is nothing new.
Yes... Except the Wii U, which supports Wii remotes, Wii Remote Plus, Wii Classic controller, Wii Balance board... Etc.

Now, funnily enough it has a new controller as well (Not counting the gamepad, the Wii U pro controller also exists.), but every game that supports the pro controller also supports wii classic controllers.

And... The main controller for multiplayer is... The Wii remote plus. - As in, the exact same thing as the controllers sold for the wii towards the end of it's life...

Come to think of it, the Wii itself still supported gamecube controllers. - And while they're awkward to use, and obviously don't work with motion controlled games, they basically did work with any game that supported the classic controller.

So... Yeah. Don't know why I felt the need to bring it up, but controllers not being compatible with newer systems may be common, but it's by no means the rule.

So basically this thing can be summed up as Microsoft wanting to get out of the gaming industry and into the general entertainment area. Wonderful.

Nintendo is always the exception, not the rule.

Ah... Yes. You might have a point there. XD - I'm not sure I even remember a time when there wasn't something weird about their systems...

Despite every core gamer I've ever read agreeing that whether they like the game or not, Call of Duty is absolutely what is turning mainstream gaming into this androgynous blob of shooters, Call of Duty Black Ops 2 sold 7.4 million copies in the launch month, and Modern Warfare 3 sold 8.8 million in the launch month. Source: http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/183066/Numbers_show_The_Call_of_Duty_decline_looks_real.php I can't find hard numbers for Madden from a decent source, but I guarantee that they're way higher than a "niche" game has any right to be.
So wait, how exactly is Black Ops 2 representative of this 'androgynous blob of shooters'? Did you play the game or are you just reading 'Call of Duty' and foaming at the mouth?

I don't see why Call of Duty being on the xbox means the console is going to sell well. It's not an exclusive or anything.
The only games they felt were worth showing at the freaking unveiling was yet another CoD, racing stuff and some EA sport stuff (I'm not counting Quantum Break since I don't count a cheesy live-action teaser as a "game")

It's pretty damning evidence that they don't have anything and instead were banking on the whole Kinect, Sports, TV thing going over much better(though they apparently had employees in the next room to create fake applause so clearly even they didn't put much faith in it)

Like it or not pure gamers are a minority slice of the pie now that consoles can do everything that was shown just now.
What Microsoft just revealed wasn't a console. It was an Entertainment system. It's an ingenious move and I expect Xbox One to sell a whole lot of units to people that don't even play games. Those sports/TV deals alone will bring in a far wider demographic.

Games aren't the primary be all and end all of a system now it seems. The market has evolved and Microsoft has seemingly evolved with it. I know almost everyone will see this as a negative thing but the REALITY is that pure gaming consoles are obsolete from a business perspective. Sure they could've gone that way. But by creating an Entertainment device instead of a console they have opened up the opportunity for one of these to actually be in every home, Which I think is a SPECTACULAR move on their part.

The exclusives with EA (Despite General gamer opinion their sports games make a ridiculous amount of money) NFL, NBA and COD (I think they mentioned something about a partnership) Have pretty much ensured this device's success regardless of how Pure Gamers feel.

Thanks for referring to me as an "entitled frat boy" since I like Madden and COD, his system sounds just right for me and my bros to play the hell out of.

Why is fraternity membership such a bad thing?

OT - It plays games, it has added benefits. The only reason I see to not get it is if my buddies go with the PS4 instead.

People need to shut up about this one, or at least watch the video instead o going off the headline. The XBone will have exactly the same support for indie games that the 360 has.
Which is horrendous.

I am not sure who the Xbox One is for it seems to be aimed at people who really dont mind paying to get fucked over and spied on as long as they have TV, Sports and COD in one package.

There is literally zero reason to be excited about the Xbox One over the competition at best its a so what I will get it despite its flaws.

It is definitely not for core gamers its seems to be gearing up to be the very worst system to play games on to be honest.

Because "entitled, preppy fratboys" can't possibly be gamers too, obviously. Those jock brains can't understand anything more than "Run & Shoot!" and they only ever buy roster updates to games they already owned! (Let's completely disregard the fact that Madden and NCAA Football are actually pretty damn deep games when you get into things, of course, because it doesn't support our strawman point!)

[sub][sub][sub]Sarcasm[sup]TM[/sup], of course.[/sub][/sub][/sub]

OT: You know how many shooters I could point out from the last five years that have been absolutely nothing like Call of Duty? Whinge and moan about the prevalence of shooters all you like, fine, but the market isn't some homogenous ("androgynous" means something else entirely) blob of military shooters.

Also, funny that your source for Call of Duty dominating the market is talking about how their sales slipped a bit between titles.

I'm perfectly fine with you stereotyping Call of Duty players. There are a lot better shooters out there. Actual gamers know that and those are the games that they'd rather play. Even the developers know that. Like Ken Levine. That's why we had that Bioshock: Infinite cover "controversy". There is truth in stereotypes sometimes.

Of course I don't think that EVERY COD player fits that description. But I do think that a vast majority of them do.

Yes, while this may usually be true, in actuality...

Johnny Novgorod said:

This is incorrect. You can actually buy a usb adapter to use PS2 and PS1 controllers with a PS3, so therefore you CAN use PS2 and PS1 controllers on a PS3. And it's not an uber-rare thing that's impossible to find, either. You can easily nab one on Amazon for less than $10. Plus, PS1 controllers always have worked with the PS2.

So while yes, this sort of ability is rather uncommon in the end; it's still something that would be a major plus if the XBone allowed such a thing.
And the master of backwards compatibility, Nintendo, has even made it so that you can even still use Gamecube controllers on the wii u with an adapter piece. And that was two generations ago! They still even make and sell gamecube controllers because they are still being bought.

OT: I agree with your basic point, that MS targets the so called "CoD-Crowd", but jeez you sound like "they" stole your candy and poped your baloon.

Its not that "they" are bad people just because "they" like different games then you.

The curious thing about the Xbone is that most people already have devices that can do everything the Xbox One can do.

For example a TV, you know MS, that thing that is mandatory to even make use of your Xbox. Surprisingly you can already watch TV with your TV, so why would someone buy a Xbox for that.

The thing the TV can not do on its own is play games, thats what people will buy an Xbox for, even the infamous "CoD-Crowd".
