Played the first one when I was a lot younger at my cousin's house. Played 7 a few years later on my playstation, and loved it. However, my favorite is FF9 Mainly because you weren't a complete god in damage (no spells that hit like 10 times for 9999 damage), and I don't know... it's just a lot of fun. Got FF 7, 8, and 9 on my PsP, and that pleases me.

No.
My first FF was VIII. Then I played I, then some VII.
But my favourite is IX. Also the best in the series and I will kick any nay-sayers in the nipples.

what kind of logic is this? the first I played WAS the first game, and it is inferior to almost all of the others. Please give a better reason next time.
There is no logic behind it.

I was just wondering how much does nostalgia affects one´s ability to judge a videogame. Since I prefered my first FF and so did a lot of people whom I talked to...it seemed like a valid point of view. The escapist, with its large and active community, was a perfect platform to confirm or disprove this «theory».

Does this seem like «a better reason» to you?
not at all, it almost comes off as intentionally trying to start a war that will get a lot of views, now that I know that isn't your intention, a better idea would be to ask how nostalgia affects people who play jrpg's, whether they prefer them over wersterns because they played them first, or if their first was their favorite, or if they only recently started playing, asking them their opinions on people who do like them.

Sounds plausible. My first was actually 7, although I didn't play it for long 'cos I didn't like it (and still don't). The first one I played to any worthwhile extent was 8, which is tied for favourite alongside 9.

Well, i certainly didn´t intend to «start a war» over it. And i think that the level of conversation in this thread has been pretty civil, so no harm done.
I was just pitching an idea to see if people agree or disagree. Apparantly they tend to disagree, which is fine by me.

As for your suggestion, it is a valid one. Feel free to create a «how does nostalgia affects people who play rpgs» thread if you wish to do so.

Cheers

I think his theory has some merit to it, to be honest. Although I can't really apply it to Final Fantasy per se.

I first played the original FF, and I may have been a bit too young to grasp the concept of RPG's back then. I didn't play another one until FF7, and that remains my favorite of the FF series.

Now, my first real RPG that I sat down and put effort into was Breath of Fire 3, and that game reigns as my favorite RPG, despite the fact that it in all honesty kind of mediocre. I still love it do death, though.

There's likely some truth to the claim, though it's not going to be universally true. The series changes enough between each iteration that people are likely to mostly like the one that they started with.

Personally, my first was VII, but my favorite is Tactics, 'cause, you know. Tactics.

Just checking but do you mean to say that you don't fall in love with the first luminous-orange haired female that falls into your flying taxi?

An interesting analogy.....and it would work if that female wasn't Milla Jovivich!

played 7/8/9, and 7 was my favorite.
was also my first, so with me, it holds true, though 10 etc. does look nice

There does seem to be a tendency there, but I played 1 first, yet I like 6 the best.

not true for me. FF7 is the 1st one I played and its definitely in my top 5 but not my favorite.

My favorite is FF6 even though I only recently played through it completely.

top five: 6,9,1,7,10

I disagree. FF X was my first, but Tactics is my favorite while I personally rank IV and XII above X. Still, I am more forgiving of X than the FF veterans.

I started with Final Fantasy VII. My most recent finished Final Fantasy title was VI and I plan on going back to VII to see what I enjoyed about it, but it's just boring at the moment. Not an awful game at all though.

My personal favorite is Final Fantasy Tactics though. Even the horrible translation was easily forgiven.
