What always bothered me was the similarities the anime had to "Doctor Who".
Before you label me a nutcase for saying that, please allow me to provide some justification for that remark with these little pointers.

A) a protagonist travels the land seeking adventure and righting wrongs, to do so he employes the use of a strange gadget(Pokeball / Sonic screwdriver) that is somehow able to perform the exact task that is required at that time.

B) For any task requires the help of another person, the protagonist will be followed by one or more assistant(s) that has the required skill set and come from an alternative background that provides some form of culture clash that will occur at least once during the tale.

C) When the actor/actress becomes too old or they receive a much more promising opportunity for their career, the producers will just them out for this years model in order to keep the show going.

These are just some of the similarities that i have looked for at painstaking depth.

I stopped buying the games years ago because it was pretty much the same thing with only 'better' graphics and a slew of new pokemon with designs I thought were pants. If I actually listed all the things that bothered me about the games methinks I would get an instant ban :p

As for the anime... Kinda got bored of it since every episode went like this.

Ash: I have to continue my quest to become a pokemon mastah!
Random Stranger: Oh no! Can you help me!
Ash: Yes, I shall stop my epic quest to help you Random Stranger whom I have just met : D
Brock: I love you Q_Q
*SHENANIGANS/SPEECH ABOUT POKEMON PHILOSOPHY/LIFE LESSON/SOMETHING ASH WILL HAVE FORGOTTEN NEXT EPISODE*
Team Rocket: Blah blah blah Jessie blah blah blah James blah blah blah Meowth that's right.
James: I'm not nearly as much fun now that they've changed my voice actor.
Ash: Oh my God! Team Rocket! I would never have expected that.
*Fight ensues, Team Rocket blasts off again*
Random Stranger: Well, thanks for that. Good luck with your quest thing.
Ash: Toodles *walks off into the sunset, waving back at Stranger*

Howe about how at the end of the game you hold all the legendary pokemon and what is probably the only Charizard/Blastoise/Venusaur in whole of the land and no one comments on it. No one comments on how you seem to own all the Legendary pokemon?!

Oh and how snorlax is asleep in the way. Throw pokeball much?!

Only played red and blue, annoyed that you can only hop over fences on your bike only when going downwards, why not upwards. I can't remember if you can hop left and right.

Some of the ridiculous evolving conditions, using a certain item, fine. Trading, okay. Trading while holding a specific item, Goddamnit.

*GASP* did you break into the vault and steal the secret recipe for Pokemon episodes?

Why the hell Team Rocket just accepts that they lost a pokemon battle and legs it, when they are fully grown adults and the protagonist is a 10 year old...totally not advocating child cruelty here, but come on!

The repetative gameplay, the skills that do comparitively nothing compared to the pure damage dealing, the bastardized elemental system that strains to make sense at the worst of times, the complete cash-cow nature of the series and the fact that they have yet to make an MMO.

1) Haunter being the only awesome looking ghost pokemon, and he's weak as poo
2) Ergh, the pokemon designs... *sigh* ever since the silver/gold they've just gotten silly :S so many newer ones dont even look slightly biological :S just weird boxes and lines and dots.
3) Legendary Pokemon. Mewtwo and Mew were fantastic. But look where it's gone? Space/time pokemone? a GOD pokemon for pete's sake? Sweet mango chutney, when will it stop? where could they possibly go from a GOD pokemon??
4) Some of my favourite pokemon are trade-only evolutions. What could possibly happen to a pokemon to make an owner swap convince it to change?...Why does this mechanic even need to exist? If I want to interact with other players, I damn well will, but dont force it upon me :S

Ah this thread is on a different tangent to what I was thinking of... but meh.

I cannot stand the sound that the gameboy makes when you randomly encounter a wild pokemon. It is unbearable after hearing it over 10000 times.
Which is why I always played with no sound!

Come to think of it, you've all raised excellent points here which have never really occurred to me before and I've been playing the Pokemon games for the last 12 years or so... Wow, I'm really unobservant!

Things that bugged me in the game.

The Pokémon could only learn 4 moves.
The first wild pokémon you encounter in every game after the first generation are just reskins of Pidgey and Ratata.
If you taught Ratata Thunderbolt (using a tm) it became what I called a "Super-Pikachu" and was stronger than an actual Pikachu of the same level.
There were actually 5 members of the "Elite 4"
You never got to be the "Champion of the Elite 4" I would have loved to have stayed in that final room and battled starry-eyed wannabe's until the end of time, but no I wasn't allowed to.

That's about it I think.

Actually a sweet mango chutney Pokemon would be amusing >.>... Ahem, but yes, the designs are what put me off in the past. Sometimes you can't help but wonder if they're even trying (unlike Digimon who crank out some amazing work but who's games are broken)

My issue was always that once the main game storyline had run to completion, I felt as a player as though I was running around an empty fairground. Nobody would say anything to me they hadnt already lots of times before, and the thriving world of pokemon trainers didn't want to fight me any more, and all the gyms had had enough of me. I just felt unwelcome in a hollow world.

They've gone some way to fixing that in later games with the battle finder whatsit, the thing that lets you re-challenge trainers for a rematch, and providing a few things for you to do when the game is over, which is much welcome.

I really hate the fact that some pokemon have to love you enough to evolve. I spent ages trying to get my chingling to evolve with an exp share only to find out i need to actually use it in battle or else it won't love me.

In the anime, how is Pikachu not a freaking god or something. It should own everything in its path. Ash has been training that thing for how many years now?

The fact that a giant lizard-bird the size of a small street with the power to stop the three Legendary Bird's from fighting didn't have the strength to fly around with you on it's back unless you deleted it's ability to fire lasers from it's mouth with a HM move.

Lazy god-damned Lugia...

Well lets see here.

Machoke, it's been said that its skin stretches and rips because it can't contain its muscles. Now Google a picture of one and take a look at it arms.

Latios/Latias carries around Soul Dew. Soul Dew, is made from the soul of a dead Lati@s. You only get to see one of them.

Lickilicky, is a really fat Pokemon that eats everything in sight. It can learn the move muddy water, which is like th move surf, but brown. Consider how that could work, just don't do it while your eating.

Hypno, it eats children. Drifloon, it's a cute balloon thing. It tries to drag children to hell.

Golbat, it's a vampire bat, and feeds on people. It's nearly two meters tall and weighs over 120 pounds.

Parasect, when they evolve from Paras, the fungus zombifies them. Hell bug Pokemon in general. Spiders a full yard in length, hornets three feet tall and that attack in massive swarms, Man-sized praying mantises , 4 foot tall scorpions, 6 foot long dragonflies.

In short, Pokemon is disturbing as hell.

The Trading card game.

Nearly everyone in grade school was into it, and it baffles me.

Original game that i borrowed was pretty nice though, it was even better that it actually worked on the Super Game Boy.
