Losing hope for all of humanity because of one or two publicized acts of stupidity may be the most melodramatic thing I've ever encountered.

Yup.

People grow into a confortable desperation. Losing hope is very convenient, as you don't even have to get up from the couch to lose it. Here in Rio things are pretty bad right now, worst then ever. But there are still people helping each other and living their lifes.

Losing hope for a broad generalization is too convenient in my opinion.
