When you sell your soul (4000 posts)
We're there, man. We made it.
And when you get 10k, you get it back, all shriveled up, beaten, and bloodied.

I've also noticed that most people on here behave well enough.
And when they do step out of line, the mods are quick to respond.

On the topic of Labby and Ultra becoming mods: I love the little messages they leave when they lock a thread.
They just make me cackle.

- One of the most civilised gaming-focused forums I ever visited.
- A lot of awesome people.
- Proper grammar and spelling are appreciated, therefore this forum helps me improve my skill.
- Mods have their ups and downs apperantly, sometimes throwing around the banhammer like it's a toy, sometimes letting people slip by I think should be punished.
- It's just a really cool place to be.
Fixed.

I KNOWS YOU LOVES ME FOR IT!

Grammar and spelling is hugely better than most other forums, and repeat threads are (usually) kept to a minimum.

The most annoying thing I've noticed is the people who post and say nothing other than "Report and move on". Why the hell can't they follow their own advice? All posting does is bump the thread; they tell people to just click Report and not post, so why can't they?

Hmmmm, I've noticed more mod activity since Laby and Ultra were made members of the Red Guard. Which is expected, since it brings the number of mods up from three to five. Plus the staff, of course. Generally, the place has improved too since I first joined in December last year. Not to mention the fact that the video series are getting better generally (loving Apocalypse Lane and Rebecca Mayes specifically).

P.S. I have to say I'm jealous of Labyrinth and UltraJoe for getting mod status. Still, well done to them both, they're doing a bang on job so far :)
Hasn't Baby Tea also gained mod status?
I go away for two weeks and I miss three people being made Red Guards? What else have I missed?

Don't worry, I recognise you when you post.

I've noticed that jerks are in short supply.

Three major things.

"Why all the _____ hate?" is a meme.

The general mindset of the average fanboy is frowned upon. That is to say, the Escapist forums don't seem to be a place where people go to say, "Wow, this game/system/developer is awesome!" Rather, it's a place where they go to complain about how much a game sucks and speculate on "why people like Halo so much."

Lastly, everyone in the User Reviews forum seems to be out to make a name for themselves. Rarely if ever is a review posted simply with the title of the game and it's console of origin as the thread title. It's almost always "So-and-so reviews Shooting Game 2: The Sequel", or "Awesome Review Series Volume 4: Fantasy MMO", or "Snappy Comeback Game Reviews Episode 2: Fighting Game IV".
Seems like everyone's out to be the next Internet sensation. Thanks very much, Mr. Croshaw.

Thank you! I've been doubting about that for weeks now, and now I finally know. I also learned the proper use of then/than on this forum, and the fact that I should say 'said' instead of 'sad'. *hugs the Escapist*

I notice that here, more than any other forum I've been to, there is at least a bare minimum of respect and politeness that is enforced. It reminds me of the early enlightenment rules for discussion. When people rely on insults and bigotry, nothing good will be born of it. When basic rules of civility are enforced you have a nice place to actually discuss things.

Not perfect here, obviously... but it's one of the most reliable sources for good discussion I've found for entertaining reading.

We seem to be having a lot of morality threads recently, most of them starting with "What would YOU blank blank blank?"

I've also noticed there's a lack of chairs...

Oh, and, i've noticed, that when a troll invades our beloved boards, we REALLY tell 'em off, don't we? Anyone remember that Joobnook fiasco awhile ago?

Ooo I see what you did there, with your little '1984' quote.

Wich brings me to a little thing I missed:
People on the Escapist are, generally, a lot more cultured than on other forums. Movies, books, philosophy, ethics, games, music, you name it. And I'm loving it.

Nothing at all, if the reviewer in question is good at what they do. The problem is that the vast majority of reviews like these are set up as follows;

Snappy intro

Game Title (System)
words words words words words words words words words words words words words words words words words words words words words words words words words words words words words words words words words words words words words words words words words words words words words words words words words words words words words words words words words words words words words words words words words words words words words words words words words words words.

The end.

A block of text in unappealing to the eye even if the writing is decent. If the writing isn't any good to begin with, we're really in trouble. Also, and this may be more a matter of personal taste, I don't really understand how a reviewer can hope to accurately describe the game in question without pictures of any kind. That isn't to say a review without pictures can't be written, but gaming is a visual medium. That, and it would help break up a daunting wall of text.

I've noticed that you don't have to hit thousands of posts for this place to steal your soul... it just happens. I now spend countless hours at work browsing.

Some people are nice, some people are jerks, and at the end of the day it feels just like any other forum. Only it's a bit less stupid and a bit more pretentious.

I like that there's a whole area for users here to post reviews. I really enjoy that they're encouraging the people here to actually contribute.

I've noticed the amount of idiots that require suspensions/perma-bans has gone down considerably. whatever the mods are doing, they're doing it right!

I have learned there is an odd mix between elitists, idiots who try to act like aforementioned eltists, people who want to share thier views with one another respectfully, and trolls. The last group to be mentioned is the smallest, but they often get the most attention.

All in all, I'd say that The Escapist is a good place where most of the people will try to help you and often have interesting things to say. A lot of people like to think that this place has gotten gradually worse as time has gone passed, I used to feel like that until I realized that I'd just gotten board. The people on my monitor hadn't gotten worse - weather they are old or new members. It was the face behind it.

To give you an idea of what I mean; my first post here was a fanboy, poorly spelled, and nonsensical post that lacked prooper punctuation and even capital letters - needless to say I've improved a bit. Anyway, these days those posts get on my nerves quite a lot even though I used to do the very same thing, before of course it didn't bother me because I was just like that.

It's really just a case of perspective.
