So what. You could do the same thing with any 12-bar blues from the 30s or any rock or doo-wop from the 1950s.
You and I have shockingly similar avatars...are we pop stars now?

My two cents is that pop songs use familiar progression, chording and lyrical styles because people like things that are familiar, and record companies make money by giving people what they want.

The lyrics are largely meaningless too, they're just there to carry the melody line. You'll get a good laugh if you actually listen to a lot of them, I usually do.

Yes, there is a LOT of music that doesn't sound like pop music. Look at anything indie or punk or modern orchestral and opera. But the masses are alienated by those sounds. Reminds me of the mountain dew commercial where they butchered the queen of the night aria...the most beautiful song and no one can appreciate it.

Also... Katy Perry is fuckin' much hotter than Pachelbel.
This is the best thing anyone has ever said. Ever. Thankyou for brightening my evening.

It's true as well. Ketty Perry is really fucking hot. It's what the mute button's for.

What I hate the most is that somehow Kesha feels she knows how P Diddy feels in the morning. That's just presumptuous.
Lol.

OT: I didn't know what the hell this thread was about at first. Then I realized that Katy Perry and Kesha weren't actually the same person. You could say I didn't know that because I don't listen to pop. Or you could say I don't listen to pop because I didn't know that. Equally valid statements.

I fail to see your argument when Tik Tok is played louder and essentially drowns out California Gurls. I do find it hilariously ironic I happen to be listen to California Gurls as I type this and like both singers. Of course there is little music I dislike.

Nonetheless, I could pull metal and achieve the same results you just did. I could do the same with gothic metal/rock and rap as well. The similarities are they for all genres and not exclusive to one. Some are certainly more pronounced and pop does have a tendency to adhere to a specific beat more so than other genres. That does not mean rock, metal, rap or any other is different.

You wish for an example. Youtube the following four gothic metal/rock bands. Delain, Nightwish, Within Temptation and van Canto. Now try and tell me there are not similarities to their songs.

But yeah, maybe pop music has a tendency to be all pretty similar. Even more similar than other genres of music, but if people who enjoy pop don't mind then there is nothing wrong with it. Music is meant to do something for the listener, so long as it does then its completed its goal.
Wow, those guys are amazing.

But you're totally right, it's the listeners choice what they like or not. No use making a big deal about it. Besides, if we didnt have Kesha wouldn't have The Midnight Beast:D

It happens alot. You can even take two Genre's of music that arent even close and they'll steal something from them.
I got a perfect example.

The first five seconds of this song:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KS3h-2mC23E

Now on this song go to 2:40

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R20f-TPKjzc

It's the same thing. And the second song came out in the 60's or 70's and the first song came out a few years ago.

The music industry is running out of truly talented people who can sing AND write songs, so they just either do 'cover' songs or they make up crappy songs stealing other peoples work.

Works best in stereo. On the left we have Katy Perry, on the right we have Kesha (I refuse to write her name with a dollar symbol due to basic human decency).

People laugh when I say all pop music sounds the same and is specifically designed to emulate itself in an endless loop. This, I believe, proves my point. I haven't done a 'mashup' here, I've literally just played them at the same time.

Is this a sign that music is stagnating? How long is it going to be before 'pop' music is actually good again?
I'm with you, dude. I think that if you searched hard enough you'd probably find Lady Gaga, Beyonce and Rhiannannana (I choose to misspell her name for comic effect)songs that sync up just as well.

But this isn't really a new problem. Chart music has always been the Carling to actual music's Hobgoblin (obscure beer reference because my creative writing lecturers always told me to write what I know). It's bad, but people are always going to buy it because it saturates the market. Most of the people who buy this chart music stuff are young teenagers who haven't been around long enough to know where the good music lives. Eventually they'll either grow out of it or they'll become the sort of adult that just doesn't care what they listen to. The sort of person that says they like 'everything' when someone asks them what type of music they like. If they reach that stage then there's no helping them.

Discovering good music is like getting taken out of the matrix. If you're too old then the shock can kill you. A good acid test is giving a pop listener some Tom Waits and watching them freak the fuck out.

Actually that's really funny to watch. Do that to as many people as you can, as fast as you can.

Blimey, that is actually the same song. Kinda surreal, the way it comes from each speaker :p

Oh, the similarities between these songs are not the problem... The problem is both lyrics are rubbish, the artists not very talented and the "beat" makes me want to strangle kittens. And I REALLY love kittens...

And seeing as "pop" music is "popular" music, it'll be good again once average Joe gets his ears on straight and can see crap for what it is... Crap...
Thank You!!!!

You are my hero for saying that

XD My thoughts jumped straight to this sketch ^^

OT: I was admittedly surprised with the synchonism, but to be fair, for all the songs released, there's only the tiniest percent that don't sound similar to other songs.

You could do a similar mashup with so many metal, rap, pop or hipster songs, so I'm not sure why you're picking on pop specifically.
Granted I don't have any taste for pop music, but there are people who do get off to rapping their hairy knuckles to the one beat they know, so let the apes have their beat.

I sometimes question myself: "Why are they even trying? All good music has already been done."

Oh, I don't know. I think it takes real talent to get people to autotune your voice so you don't sound like the talentless vocal-noob that you are. It probably takes skill to let other people write the music to your song as well. In the end, all the "artists" have to do is write the god-awful lyrics and hand it to someone else.
