My two cents is that pop songs use familiar progression, chording and lyrical styles because people like things that are familiar, and record companies make money by giving people what they want.
The lyrics are largely meaningless too, they're just there to carry the melody line. You'll get a good laugh if you actually listen to a lot of them, I usually do.
Yes, there is a LOT of music that doesn't sound like pop music. Look at anything indie or punk or modern orchestral and opera. But the masses are alienated by those sounds. Reminds me of the mountain dew commercial where they butchered the queen of the night aria...the most beautiful song and no one can appreciate it.
