Okay, so people who aren't geeks/gamers think they are. so what? Why does it actually matter? Why is it such an injustice to you if they aren't? You know they aren't, so you can just ignore them.
Can I join you two in complete agreement?Phasmal said:Wow, this is lovely.TheKasp said:Yeah... This again? Are you really that afraid of girls in your club or why do you specify the gender? Do you want to imply that there is no fake behaviour from the other gender or do you just imply that you hold the female gender to such irrational standards that no one could qualify as geek or nerd in your book when they have a pair of tits. If including this, do you also hold overweight males to such standards because they also have a pair of tits?
Well. Eplain this to me with your own words and not with some stupid yt link I won't even bother to look at: Why the need to specify the gender?
Also, no, I don't feel particulary enraged by fake geeks / nerds. Because they have *shock* zero impact on my life.
And finally: You imply that being a nerd or geek had some kind of entry barrier. Well, it had only one in particular. Have a non-mainstream hobby which consumes a big chunk of your time. Tadaa, you are a geek / nerd.
I heart this comment.
Stupid bullshit about fake girls is stupid bullshit and I really don't care for the frustrated tears of gamer hipsters who don't want ladies in their treehouse.
Gaming is not `your` thing. It's just a thing. And everyone can enjoy it.
Oh yeah, and, I'm a gamer girl.
Come at me bro.
Haha, yeah. Even though it's an actual name, that's where she discovered it and liked it a lot. Also, she talked me into reading that book as a teenager, a few really good episodes of the original Star Trek she liked as a kid, and we watched the entire series of the X-Files together!Owyn_Merrilin said:You're actually named after the sister of Paul Atreides? That is awesome.Chemical Alia said:Weirdly incidental and just sorta related, but my mom got my middle name from reading Dune, lol. There's pretty much nothing nerdy about her at all, but then again, I don't think picking up a good sci-fi book was considered all that out of the ordinary back when she first read it.Owyn_Merrilin said:I'm starting to think that the real nerd subculture is dead anyway. Or rather, not dead so much as buried very deeply on the internet, and less deeply in real life. Time was, you popped onto a dedicated server in an online game, and it had the same kind of friendly, helpful atmosphere as a tabletop game store. That time is long, long gone. Modern gamer culture is nothing like the nerd culture of old at all -- when was the last time you saw someone giving a reference to, say, Dune that went beyond "hey Dune, I heard that was supposed to be a classic, don't I look smart for referencing it?"
Edit: That came out kind of sexist. The point was, the Alia from Dune, not just from some baby book or something.
More likely cause your handsome.FitScotGaymer said:I don't know about fake gamer girls, but I have been accused of being a fake gamer guy. Not sure if its cos i'm gay and gays aren't allowed to be gamers; or if it is because I am half way attractive (don't mean to sound arrogant but im decent looking lol) and geeks are all supposed to be ugly shut in's.
It's frustrating.
You want to know the irony... (Is it irony?)... of this guy's video?ThisGuyLikesNoTacos said:I can't believe how angry that video made me (Part at 1:14 specifically)...
Okay, a couple of questions:
Isn't being accepted in the society what nerds and geeks should be aiming for? Does it really matter if others don't understand what it really feels like as long as we're accepted? How are we going to make them understand? Does it matter if a culture is being sold out?
I also dislike how some nerds go from "Oh woe is me!" to "Fuck you, I'm smarter then you!" as if that helps. Hell, even the guy in the video tries to make us feel about how awful being a nerd is, only to blatantly say that nerds are smarter then average people (Which is a lie if you didn't already know).
If you are honestly furious about this "Selling out the culture." and "Stupid people thinking they know something about the culture but really don't." you are simply a bad person. So what, if you have gotten injustice towards yourself for stupid reasons? It doesn't give you the right to deny other people (which have not suffered) from labeling themselves the same as you, or demanding that they do suffer from it.
Yes, attention seekers are annoying, but they appear on every single culture. And the only way to fight them is to ignore them, not yell at them and their existence.
Just stop with this elitism and let others join in the fun.
It's bad enough that you're posting someone else's thoughts. These aren't even particularly good thoughts, though.Toilet said:
Except for the professional part.It would be like if I played 10 minutes of basketball and called myself a professional athlete and tried to fit in with other 6'4" basketball players.
Speaking of my music nerd cred, Punk was a term coined in the late sixties (or early seventies at the latest) for bands like the Velvet Underground. So-called "78 punk" was a so-opting of an existing term, in no small part for the purpose of commercial marketing. The Sex Pistols were as marketed and prefab as any Boy Band you might complain about in the 90s.The best example is the punk rock which was anti establishment but now you can buy punk rock on iTunes and buy spiky belts in Hot Topic.
Mostly self-diagnosed.Rawne1980 said:Now not all of us were stereotypical "geeks". Some of us had active social lives with no personality disorders that seems to be the "in thing" with self proclaimed "geeks" at the moment.
GET OFF MY LAWN!The fact that most of the people saying gaming is "their" thing and non-geeks be damned weren't even sperm when it was getting started.
Hipsters don't do treehouses. They're not underground.Phasmal said:Stupid bullshit about fake girls is stupid bullshit and I really don't care for the frustrated tears of gamer hipsters who don't want ladies in their treehouse.
I'M NOT YOUR BRO, BRO!Oh yeah, and, I'm a gamer girl.
Come at me bro.
I've always enjoyed sharing my hobbies with people. Which, yes, probably means I'm the wrong type of person for the BS in that Youtube video, but like, I find more pleasure in sharing with people than in hoarding it. Maybe they just need a visit from Cindy-Lou Who or the Ghost of Christmas Present or something. I can't imagine going "people sharing interest in what I do? THE HORROR!"Gaming is not `your` thing. It's just a thing. And everyone can enjoy it.

There's not some arbitrary line that gets drawn that is a firm decrier of what is and isn't gamer/nerd. But there are obvious signs. Such as the ones in the video.Rastelin said:Please explain what you mean by fake gamer. I hear people use the term, but no one can point at what juncture you stop being a "fake gamer" and turns in to a real one. Where is the red line here? Since you use the word hate, you obviously feels strongly about this and have a satisfactory argument for feeling that way.Eri said:I hate fake gamer girls as well, but there are many fake gamer guys too. Isn't it weird the things we have to be taught?Chemical Alia said:I never even know this was supposedly a "weird" thing until after high school.
Wondering if those were serious, though. A lot of people do that exact same thing tongue-in-cheek.Eri said:
