This [http://www.rollingstone.com/politics/news/one-towns-war-on-gay-teens-20120202] Disgusts me.

I am at an absolute loss for words.

Edit: To all those who say that the principal is to blame, please remember. None of these teachers want these kids to be bullied, they're not the perpetrators of hate here, its the conservative backdrop of which the school is set.

Now of course you could say they could have done more, but to do more could cost them their job. Is that acceptable? No, but to say that you or anyone else would do differently, and I mean actually being those teachers who may have nowhere to go and have no other choice; is ridiculous.

I'm not saying that they are right in what they do, I wish the teachers, especially the LGBT teachers could stand up for the kids, and for themselves. But fear is powerful, and in a climate where jobs are so few, it becomes a powerful leverage against these teachers. But in the end that's what the community hopes on.

I'm sorry for the rant, but all of this has gotten me so flustered that I feel I have to see both sides of this story, even if that means delving into the mind of an evil conservative old lady whose all for seeing kids kill themselves.

You might want to take some quotes from that article and put them in your OP to a low content wrathing but whoa...

That's... that is some serious shit. I'm glad I didn't grow up in an environment that treated homosexuality like that but man. Highschool is hard enough without everyone trying to convert you or denouncing you as an abomination. That loss of life is unacceptable.

That is beyond unacceptable and sickening. It pains me down to my very soul.
Its despicable that despite all the great things we're all capable of, we treat eachother in such a beastlike careless manner. Its a sad day for all of us.

Senseless. Unsurprising, but senseless.

I might be getting into R&P territory here, but are not Tolerance, Compassion, and Sympathy 'Traditional Christian values'?

It's ironic that the people who tend to frustrate me most in this world are other 'Christians'.

These people aren't Christians. These people are monsters. I know a lot of good people who are Christians, and these people? They are not.

Wow...if you need a reason to be an atheist*, look no further. Absolutely repugnant. I thought we lived in a country where the church was SEPARATE FROM the state.

*Actually, the Roman religion had no stance on homosexuality, and in fact to the Ancient Romans it was simply viewed as another sort of preference, the same way a straight man might prefer tall women, blondes, etc. The only reason they could not marry was due to the legal intricacies involving home ownership (ie the man of the family owned everything) Unfortunately, they're not around anymore. Another sad story you can thank idiots like this (Fundamentalist Christians) for.

Unfortunately, as with most major religions, those only apply to the people who agree with the practitioner =/

No, you're right, and I know it's a topic that I have to argue with my parents about whenever the topic of homosexuality comes up.

One of my favorite teachings is "love your enemy" just because it's so counter-intuitive but yields amazing results. Maybe I'm just old-school though I guess. Also I don't view homosexuals as enemies but I hope you see the point anyways.

I think I lost a few brain cells after reading this:

"They argued that any form of gay tolerance in school is actually an insidious means of promoting homosexuality ? that openly discussing the matter would encourage kids to try it, turning straight kids gay."

I went to private Christian Middle & High schools. I saw a lot of ignorance tossed around and as the old saying goes 'you fear what you don't understand'. I still twitch every time I hear someone suggest that 'the gay' is something you can catch, like a disease or something. I will say, honestly, the nicest thing about the Christian schools is that they armed me with the very book that dispensed with their irrational fears.

Christ hung out with whore, drunks, and tax collectors. He had nothing but disdain for the 'religious'.

Not exactly. Homosexuality is a surprisingly modern concept. What we'd call homosexual activities certainly existed, but the way our society views them only originated a few hundred years ago.

...

OT: Also not surprised, such things are almost routine. It's somewhat unfortunate that it's not particularly shocking or frightening, it's forgettable and easy to dismiss, and so there's little reason to put the effort into trying to change things.

Bloody...

They should be eradicated. Storm up the office and defenestrate the principal, for a start.

EDIT: Just to get it all out of my system. Like an angry confession.

The bullies are the absolute scum of humanity. Utter filth haphazardly disguised as humanity, making our species all the more disgusting for the resemblance. But even worse are the teachers and administrators resonsible. They abandon their duties as empathic and caring human beings, out of petty cowardice, or by mandate of their perverted, abhorrent cult. And they are both murderers. Neither are worthy to live in a world with smiles and sunshine.

I confess that I have a slight urge to see them reap what they sow, their nightmares about the gay menace made real. The bullies cornered in secluded alleyways or behind empty buildings by their once-victims, batons and truncheons at the ready. Reap what you sow. Cause and effect.

This behaviour would perhaps be acceptable in the miserable, violent bronze-age certain perversions of Christianity seems to hanker so for. But it got not place today. It is unacceptable and unforgivable.
As for Machmann and her fellow secterites who have perpetuated this, who have had their hands knowingly and gladly involved in each and every tragedy... Nackskott.

No doubt will they act like secterites tend to do, by attempting to minimize their own responsibility in this crime as soon as the teat of their scheme begins to run dry.

ENDRANT.

Just had to do that. There is a limit to how much you can carry.

With it all out, I can just hope that the wounds will heal, and that things will change.

Wait what, people have the right to like or not like whatever they choose . In principle . If you don't like cake , i can't force you to like cake, it's your right to not like cake . Same principle applies here , if someone doesn't like homosexuals , you can't force the person to like them , that is their right ( keep reading don't quote just that). Now here , we have discrimination , discrimination is bad , no ome should ever be discriminated against no matter what the situation is , not liking a person for whatever reason is a mans right but to dkscriminate is taking things way too far .

..........

There is only one punishment proper enough for these people. They should be made to feel the pains, and emotions of every damn kid being fucked over by their shitty ass legislation that they use to feel morally superior. Granted, most of them would go insane from the revelation, but that's no big deal in this case, IMO.

Honestly, this is just unacceptable. Them and their hate filled self-serving bigotry have essentially MURDERED these kids, and are hurting far more. Gays are not monsters! They are just like every other fucking human being on this planet, only they happen to be attracted to their own sex. ...And really, if you boil it down to exactly that...HOW can you see it as "evil", without using a several thousand year old book (written by humans with their own damn flaws and agendas) as a shield?

People can be as squicked out about homosexuality as they want...But the second they allow someone to come to harm because they took action that led to someone's harm because of it...Then that's unacceptable, and needs to be rectified. And in this case, that needs to be done HARD.

This. This needs to be rubbed int eh race of every bigoted, self-righteous, "holier than thou" asshole that hides behind religion to justify their bullshit.

IF I knew any fundamentalist asshole Christians like the ones referred to in that state, I would tell them that, straight up.

On the other hand, if another Jesus rose up tomorrow, the fundamentalist Christian community would deny it, and claim he was an agent of evil. Because that's how warped some of these people are.
