I thought the tutorial in Futurama was quite funny.

'So Fry, whats it like being dead?'

'Theres a dark tunnel, and then you see this blinding light and it says...Game Over'

Also, when you go back to the body and you just see his head completely flattened by the Anvil.
lol i loved that :D

The first one that came to mind was in Silent Hill 3 when Heather dies and Valtiel drags her away.

NINJA'D!

Oh well, then how about the "game over" screen in Uplink? It just says that you have been caught, and your computer and password have been revoked. We don't know you.

The only problem? It's permadeath. If you try to log in again, you get another game over screen. So you have to start ALL over again.

Probably the coolest I've seen is the ending in Resistance 2

He fucking dies [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yQ5-Py8xvvc], not MGS4 stye where he chickens out. But Hale gets shot square in the head. "Forgive me sir. It was an honor" BAM, shoots hale in the head.

did anyone put this yet?: the game over screen for Sega Rally Championship 2

here's a link for those who don't know what it is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M6aRwky0W5Y

it's like saying: "even though you lost, at least you get a satisfying ballad for all your troubles".

until it got annoying

How's about the "blob" endings in "I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream"? If you think about them they are easily the worst possible ways to (never) die, and the artwork onscreen is awesome.

I don't know the best, but one of the worst game overs is in the stupid Fellowship of the Ring game. You kill 3 chickens and the game ends.

I know that I've been beaten to it, but I like the improved Friday the 13th [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vl-4cBmkLCs] game over screen much better.

This isn't the player, but when you shut down turrets in portal.

I don't hate you.

In fact all their quotes are sweet.

That game still creeps the shit out of me. I wish my computer could still run it....

I think there's one in Final Fantasy 10 when you have to beat Sin quickly, before he throws an instant game-over at you. Failure gives you a cut scene showing Sin not only wiping you out, but completely obliterating the city you were flying over.
Awesome.

You aren't alone. If your stomach didn't turn during the Nazi War Camp surgery bits, YOU HAVE NO SOUL.

I remember in Chrono Trigger, when you died at a certain point in the game, there was a HUGE long cutscene showing the games main boss guy destroying the world in the future and stuff. It was like, five minutes long, and then, when it was all over, it showed a still image of the earth going dark, and then a pendulum slowly swung to a stop, and the words "And time ceased to change" came up all epic on the screen.

Obviously spoilers.....

but I guess my favorite is the ending of Shadow of the Colossus. You finally finish killing the final Colossi, and it ends up that you were helping the bad guy, who subsquently takes over you body and attempts to kill all of the warriors who raided the temple. Sure the bad guy is sealed before the credits, but leaving the main character as a baby......yeah....

Man... I wasn'r expecting anyone to know about Total Distortion. Let alone the OP.

But yeah, that one gets my vote. Honorable mentions to the deaths in Clock Tower for the SNES where you run into an elevator, hear screams and then blood leaks out from under the elevator door....creepy shit.
I preferred the one where she is driving away and sees the giant scissors rising slowly from the back seat.
I say the one I just said because you both succeeded and yet failed at the same time.

Clock Tower on the SNES has already been mentioned, but I prefer the H ending [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ymh5G8ivf4g] (it starts at about 6:00 on that video, but go here [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=smu9Pwb0C_w&feature=related] if you want to cut to the chase). I love the genre homages in the game ("it's only a cat", running and tripping at the worst possible time during chases), and this ending is just a perfect little knife.

The old King's Quest II also gave you an encounter with a priest, whom you could order you character to kill. Doing so, however, prompted a message from the programmers to the effect that no one who would kill a man of the cloth was fit to play the game, so they would therefore end your game (and kill your character) for you. Man, times were different.

ETA: ::looks at above post:: Dang, that was not planned.
