Sounds like another likely victim of consolidation.
Assuming this is true: The remaining publishers will grow stronger and attain more market control with THQ's demise. Others may follow in their wake if they cannot find some way to compete with the Golden Geese of Gaming.

(and this is why I find mega-profitable game franchises like Call of Duty 4 to be ultimately dangerous to the gaming industry as a whole; they promote stagnation instead of competition and when their competitors' clones fail to stand up to the original, the competition just dies. Without competition, stagnation sets in even further, fueled by stronger and stronger monopolistic tendencies. This ultimately will cause a creative industry like gaming to collapse when everyone gets tired of the same old shit).

Just imagine a gaming industry ruled mostly by EA and Activision. Scary.

.I would hope we don't lose any more publishers without someone else filling the void, but I don't see that as being likely. Besides the two worst publishers in EA and Activision, we also have the "B-Lister" publishers (in terms of size, not quality): 2k Games, Ubisoft, Zenimax, and most of the old Japanese publishers, who have largely shriveled up in recent years.

I really don't want to lose a big publisher and have the market grow closer and closer to just EA vs Activision. Most THQ published games are actually very good (take a look at their catalogue on Steam), so it's always seemed weird to me that they don't seem to be making money.

Everyone needs to buy Metro: Last Light to make things better. It'll be worth it. Also, if someone could convince Volition to make Freespace 3 (I only just realised that they made Freespace 1+2, and they're a Subsidiary of THQ) I'll gladly throw my money at them.

Good. Space Marine was a f*cking terrible game. Give the license to someone who can make a decent shooter.
I find it super odd on how much hate that Space Marine actualy got. I really enjoyed it on PC since it was well polished contrary to what people have said, not a shitty port to PC since yknow Runic pretty much ONLY makes PC games and not a bad attempt at 3rd person shooter for a studio that makes RTS game.

Also I have been spending rather alot of money on Games Workshop's Black Library website buying their eBooks, since Space Marine got me hooked.

I'm about half done with the current Horus Heresy novels and loving them.
Also any suggestions on what 40k series to read next since I will run out of HH books to read eventually.

Things I care about:
* Relic (!!!) - if they go down, what happens to Homeworld?

* Metro: Last Light

* Darksiders 2

Things I don't care about:
* Warhammer
* Sports games
* Everything else

But seriously, this is a sad thing if it comes to pass. The herd keeps thinning - soon enough there will be no second-tier publishers left at all, and then all we'll have are the two disparate camps of EActivision/MS/Sony and the indie crowd.

EA picking up Relic? HERESY!*BLAM

If this is true, the chance of Homeworld 3, Dawn of War 3 and Company of Heroes 2 has just gone lower. I do hope it's not true, THQ doesn't deserve this and neither does its devs.

as a huge WH40k book nerd you might want to try the ciaphas cain series by Sandy Mitchell it is somewhat less serious then the HH books but still very good with just the right mix of dark humor and good story. Also you might want to try then Night Lords series by Aaron Dembski-Bowden if you want something from the perspective of the other side. If you are looking for Space marine stories then I would recommend the space wolves series by William King, although I know some people didn't like it that much so your mileage may vary. And in general anything by Dan Abnett or graham mcneill is going to be good, hope this helps.

OT: if this turns out to be true it will be a sad day considering that THQ is a fairly old and well known studio, and double a shame because that 40K MMO had the potential to be awesome.

Who's going to make my yearly wrestling games now? >.>
Hopefully someone good.

Ironically, I said SR3 might be the last game I ever bought from them. Now it may not have to be a matter of integrity, but inevitability.

Note, folks, I did say MAY.

As long as this doesn't affect Dawn of War 3, Metro: Last Light and Darksiders 2, they can die and rot in a dumpster for what I care.
Oh, and it'll be a shame too.

I've realized through these comments how little we actually care for developers. I feel it's kind of a dick move to say, "I'll pay for this awesome game but I don't care if everyone who made it loses their jobs."

And this is a colossal blow to Warhammer 40,000. The were going to go for more digital stuff like games, and Relic is their way in right now. (For those of who are wondering how I know this, I was with my dad at Gamesday, the GW convention, and one of the GW employees there said that to him) So if THQ goes, who'll publish 40k games? And if Relic goes some place else, whose to say they won't ruin 40k for video games and try to call-of-dutyify it?
