"I see." Ellie decided that 'Leels' wasn't her favorite person in the immediate vicinity, but she didn't have any quarrel with her. For now. Part of her wished Leels would complete her thought on the Commander, if only to see if her pretty face on the rocks, but that part of her wasn't too distracting at the moment.

"Have fun then." She excused herself and sped up a little, walking to off to the left to keep her smoke out of the line, and to keep the most of her vision on the side of the path. In theory, she had more to worry about from being blindsided by wild pokemon or trainers than from the Rockets beside her.

Scott walked silently, he was still very sore. While walking he noticed Leela and Ellie talking. Their body language told him that they weren't getting along. Figures, everyone in this goddamn team were either a smart ass or an outright asshole. Aside from Mayu and Dylan, their youth kept them tolerable... for now.

Scott continued to stay silent and watch.

*SMACK*

"AUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGH!"

The strike of the bat cracked loudly from the front of the column. Max ran ahead to investigate. Alex stood over a man, bat swinging again. It connected squarely with the man's chest. He was wearing a suit similar to the ones Charles wore although it was quite a bit more shabby. His large mask had been ripped off, revealing dark blue eyes. His Pokeball had been wrenched away by Boris.

"Max, we found this guy crouching on the edge of that cliff there." pointed Alex. "Can you think why he would be following us?"

"He's one of those Family creeps. Psychic users." murmured a passing grunt. The column kept moving, they couldn't afford to stop but it certainly slowed near the fallen trainer.

Max noticed that a knife was buried just over his knee.

Alex is pretty fucking good with knives...

The man had tumbled down the small cliff face, twisting his leg and gashing his neck. Alex was merely adding to his misery.

"The Family are lousy friends." was the only thing Max said. He knew nothing about them and if the Executives knew anything they didn't share.

"I don't like circus clowns following us. Unless they can do a trick." said Alex, looking at the fallen gang member impatiently.

"Tell us why you're following us." said Max, glaring down at the psychic.

"Do a dance or sing a song." growled Alex, swinging his bat.

"My brothers would... would erase me if I told you anything."

"Erase you?"

"I'm not one of them, not really. Only the inner Family have powers. I just do what I'm told!"

"Tell us what you're told to do."

"I can't!"

A desperate strength none of them saw coming caught Alex by surprise. Twisting his good leg, the Clement gangster kicked Alex's leg out from under him. Pulling out the knife from his leg, he tossed it at Boris who dropped the Pokeball he was holding in alarm. The knife missed but the ball was opened instantly and an Abra appeared. In a flash he was gone.

"FUCK!" shouted Max, withdrawing the Zubat he had just released. Alex just quivered with rage.

"Why... why are they following me Maxxie?"

"I don't know, what happened between your family and the Clements?"

Alex moved faster than Max could follow and before he knew it he was on his back with a knife pressed to his neck.

"Never ask me about them again." whispered Alex, his eyes darting along Max's face. Max gulped and nodded. The grunts had stopped for this turn of events. They were staring at their officers.

"WHO TOLD YOU TO STOP?" screamed Alex, sending Rockets scurrying along. He reluctantly rose, spitting on Max's chest.

"Come on, we have a mission." he said quietly. He walked away with his grunts, his bat spinning but he wasn't whistling as was his custom. The cheery insanity of him had been chased away by something far more darker.

Something has him on the edge of his wits, something that has hurt him.

Max got to his feet hastily and retrieved his fallen hat. The place where the knife had pressed against his neck still hurt and his heart was racing. Quietly he resumed the march, walking beside Caid in silence.

"Oh and Max, do take care in Lavander Town. The tower is rather tall there."

They want us there thought Max, thinking about this Circus gang. Why hadn't he heard of this Family before?

Another incident made them slow down again. This time though, between two more interesting figures. The Lieutenant was on his back, and the Commander had the upper hand. She slowed down a little, still behind. Ironic. He wanted to displace the current Commander, but there he was, on his back.

One thing she was slightly sad about was that she didn't see what left the smudges of blood in the dirt. The Lieutenant wasn't badly hurt, and neither was the Commander. What then, she wondered, had been so wonderfully wounded?

"I wonder what happened..." she mused softly, exhaling.

Scott walked with the group. But unlike some of the other grunts he didn't stop to watch the fight. Scott had seen enough excitement for a while and quite frankly didn't care what feuds the commandeers had with each other. Once at the back of the group he was now closer to the front and out of no where he noticed that Alex had caught up again.

"I guess they sorted out their differences." Scot thought to himself.

Scott turned back around facing forward not to stare at the Commander. Alex seemed off put, not angry, but distracted. Just as before though Scott didn't care. His role now was one of self preservation. Just surviving this poisonous team would be a miracle... Some new pokemon wouldn't hurt either.

The pain of losing Red hit him again, less of a sting and more of an ache.

Mayu pouted a little bit when she heard that there was more fighting out in the front. She didn't know who was involved but she did hope that they would be able to get to their destination without losing any more people, or having any more infighting.

The march continued on without in the moonlight without incident. Max plodded along, thinking about how to get rid of Alex and on who he could rely on when he finally moved up Rocket ladder. Most of the other grunts were just complaining about the lack of beer and the tough rocky terrain. At least they had their canteens filled at the barn.

The Pokemon on the cliff face seemed to be out. Actively hunting other animals rather than defending their territory against the human column. That suited the Rockets just fine. Eventually a song broke out in the ranks. It was a bawdy song about Erika and what was going to happen when they beat her. The lyrics were absolute filth but it put the minds of the men off of the hike. Max briefly thought about Mayu then laughed. The singing went along, more than two dozen men shouting out loud into the night.

I got a hundred miles of hard on for ya baby
I got a hundred miles of hard on for ya gal
I got a hundred miles of hard on for ya baby

The songs changed topics but usually involved some of the whores of Celadon in one way or another. Max didn't join in and wondered if the singing would get them in trouble but he decided to let it go. As long as they were marching, he didn't care too much. Some of the female grunts were making disgusted faces, notably Leels.

Face it girl, you're in an all boys club. The only way up for you is in someone's lap.

A song about Jesse and James broke out, the singing reaching a crescendo. The crude lyrics and the awful sound of their voices went together perfectly. Before the fourth verse started however Alex called a halt. When they continued irregardless, he stopped it by hitting a singer in front with his bat. The scream ended the song before they could get to the bit about the long Ekans in James' pants.

"We camp here." said Alex. Normally the singing put him in a better mood, which may have been the hopes of whoever decided to start it, but his face was not jovial.

"We have no tents!" whined one grunt.

"Then maybe you'll fight harder next time some fools break into my camp!" screamed Alex.

"You've got your sleeping bags in your capsules at least. Use those." said Max, more calmly.

They all spread out ontop of the rocky soil. Max had no idea where they were but he knew they weren't nearly close enough to Lavender town. The day was upon them, the light increasing by the minute and they needed to rest. It was easier under a canvass roof but it wasn't impossible.

Max had the sentry duty volunteers spread out. There were some bushes around as well as a few large oak trees the spot Alex had picked but much of the camp was out in the open on a rise a few minutes north of route 8. A faint wind blew. And the scattered clouds did obscure the sunrise.

At least it isn't raining.

Max made for one of the bushes and sat beside it, eying the grassy fields before him. Taking out a capsule, he opened his bottle of vodka and started to drink. Around the camp Rockets ate R-bars, a shitty replacement for a warm meal. Each grunt carried enough of them to live a week without food but they tasted like chalk. Max preferred to go hungry.

Tomorrow Lavander. Another night, another battle.

As he sat drinking alone he vaguely noticed the camp spreading out further and further apart. It seemed like everyone wanted to be a little more alone. He watched in amusement as Tambi, one of the female grunts, walked from grunt to grunt, sliding into their sleeping bags.

That's one way to make your paycheck bigger.

Max let out his Spearmint pokemon. The bird chirped happily and he waved it off his shoulder.

"Keep an eye out or I'll strangle you, blasted bird..."

Scott was never one to sing but he mumbled along with the words, It brought a smile to his face.

When it was finally time to camp for the day he wandered off by himself, a girl grunt asked if he wanted any company and despite the urge to say yes, Scott turned her down. "Next time, when your not so sore." He said quietly to himself.

Finally he found a patch of ground that seemed to be softer than the rest. It probably wasn't but Scott didn't really think much into it. He released his sleeping bag and laid on top of it. It was chilly out for now, but once the sun broke past the treeline it would get plenty warm. Scott laid on his back with his hands behind his head and closed his eyes. Thinking he may want some company he also released his Meowth. The feline purred with happiness rubbing itself against Scott's ribs.

"Keep a look out" Scott ordered softly.

The Meowth jumped up on Scott's stomach and snuggled into his uniform.

"Close enough..."

Ellie would have absentmindedly hummed along if she knew any of the songs. Either way, she didn't, and so her walk was mostly filled with the mismatched tenors and bad singing.

The next camp looked a lot more... safer than the last one. She recognized a ruined building in the distance. They were still kinda far from Lavender, from what she remembered. Maybe halfway there? She had only been in the area once before, so she wasn't sure.

She decided to go for one of the oak trees, trying to figure out where the sun would end up casting its shadow. I'll have to get up at noon to change places... She took out her sleeping bag, one of the newer things she owned, and spread it out. She laid out on top of it, staring up at the leaves. "I hope it doesn't get hot today..." she mused to herself, twirling another smoke between her fingers.

Mayu had been surprised when a few of the Rockets broke out into song after song. Not understanding the lyrics, she happily sang along as much as she could once she got a feel for the lyrics. She messed up a few times, but she was having fun no less. That came to an end though, when they heard a scream from up front. She quickly stopped singing and listened close.

It seemed like they would be camping here for now, and they would only be in their sleeping bags. Perfectly fine with that, she tossed her pokecapsule to the ground and watched as her sleeping bag appeared. Sliding in, she took out a R-Bar and munched on it. Unlike the others, she enjoyed the taste.

The 'free' girls of Yellow team made their way to their own sleeping bags, done for the day. Drug addicts, gamblers, sex addicts.... Yellow team was a nice mixed bag of everything. With Alex as the cherry on top.

Max got up and promptly fell over, cursing. The sun was up high in the sky and he needed to relieve himself. Forcing himself up, he walked until he found a tiny cluster of poplar trees.

Fuck... Why am I here?

Max found himself remembering how he fought in Orange team as a little punk of a trainer after they sprung him from jail. The long nights of prowling through Celadon, fighting Giovanni's enemies in the streets. He was thrown into Yellow team with Alex. How he used to trust him...

A quick swig of vodka banished the thoughts about how things were. It was stupid and pointless thinking about his days as a street rat, running from cops and other gang members, the beatings...

I'm an officer now... An officer. I matter.

He heard footsteps behind him.

"What doyaer wan-"

The punch landed him square in the jaw.

Mayu had unconsciously set up her sleeping bag within a pretty close proximity of Max, so she was the first to notice someone in a white Rocket uniform walking towards Max. He looked like trouble, so her hand slipped to her Vulpix's Pokeball just in case. After seeing the grunt punch Max, it was all the reason she needed to release her Vulpix. "Vulpix, ember!"

She wasn't trying to gain Max's favor this time. This white grunt had attacked her superior, which made him her enemy as well. Vulpix appeared in a flash of light and let loose a stream of fire right at the grunt.

The grunt danced back, avoiding the flames and a large bird Pokemon picked up the Vulpix right off the ground.

"What the fuck?" he said in a raspy voice. He was a bald Silver team grunt with a badly burned face. He glared at Mayu for a second before his Fearow deposited the fainted Vulpix on the ground a distance away from the little girl. Max was back up on his feet and swung. Missed.

"You idiot, you think Giovanni wouldn't send for me?" said Ridner, kneeing Max in the stomach. Max was on the ground again and the flurry of punches broke the fight out of him. He lay bleeding on the rocky soil as his chest and stomach was battered.

"Vulpix, Ember!"

A shrill and annoying voice made Ellie sit up quick. One, she recognized the child. Second, you generally wanted to know what a trainer was attacking, and make sure that it wasn't you. She instinctively released her Nidorina. The poisonous pokemon trilled, looking in the direction of the Vulpix and Fearow anxiously.

Ellie scrambled up, leaving her things unattended as she jogged up to see what was happening. No way... a Silver grunt. She knew better than to get in the way of one, but obviously, the little girl was a bit stupider. Her Vulpix was plucked out of the grass and easily defeated. "Nidorina!" she stopped her pokemon's advance. She wasn't looking to waste another revive so soon.

Instead, she walked up close enough to watch them, retreating her pokemon in case the large bird that hovered around decided it was still hungry.

"Vulpix!" Mayu cried out as she hurried to get to her Pokemon's side. Returning it to her Pokeball, she glared at the scary looking, and obviously much stronger grunt and said. "Why are you doing this!? We're all supposed to be on the same side aren't we!?" She didn't yet understand the rank structure of the colors, nor did she realize who she was speaking with.

Max was numb by the time Ridner got off of him. A trickle of sweat ran down the cheek of the Silver team grunt.

"Get up." said Ridner, staring down at Max.

Get up Max... Be a man, get up. You earned this, you didn't stop Alex.. GOD MY BACK!

Max struggled to rise, flipping over onto his stomach.

"Get up."

I can't... I can't find up...

"Get up." said Ridner, pulling another Pokeball from his belt. A Butterfree came out.

The motion of getting to his feet caused Max more pain than it seemed he could bear but he got up without screaming.

"See, you're not hurt." said Ridner, walking up to Max and kicking him in the stomach. Max folded and lay on the ground, moans of pain finally escaping his lips.

"Stun."

The Butterfree flew across the entire camp, spreading spores. Every grunt in Yellow team fell to the ground, writhing and unable to control their muscles. Alex shouted, falling to his face. He had been trying to sneak up on the grunt with his bat but lay paralyzed like the rest of his team.

"If it isn't Proton's favorite little boy." said Ridner, grinning. "Wait until I get to you."

The Rocket enforcer then proceeded to move to every single Yellow grunt, kicking and punching them while they were unable to react other than with screams of pain and protest. Mayu was given special treatment.

"Next... time... you'll... know... your... place!" he said, kicking the girl.

When the Silver team grunt came to Alex, he laughed.

"How many times does your beloved team want me to hit you with your own bat?"

Voices in the chorus of grunts moaning in pain shouted.

"Kill the bastard!"

"Thirty, for every one of us!

"A million!"

The sadistic enforcer grinned.

"Sadly, we need you to complete your mission. Remember to follow your orders more closely next time Alex. The boss sends his regards."

The beat up metal bat glinted in the sunlight as he raised it above his head. Alex's screams of agony would have made Max smile if he wasn't already lying flat on his back bruised and bleeding.

The bat fell to the ground after thirty brutal hits. The white uniformed grunt smiled.

"I can do this anytime you fuckwits decide you know more than the Boss. Remember that and you'll spare me the bother!"

The Fearow flew to him and he hopped on, rising and vanishing into the sky. The moans of pain filled the entire campsite.

The boss.... We can't fail him again.

The spores wore off after a few minutes but the crying didn't die down for much longer.

Leela woke up under the same tree she'd gone to sleep in by a cacophony of voices, ranging from the pitch of the kid's to someone she didn't quite recognize. Her first priority was, of course, to make sure she was somewhat presentable, second was to find out what all the fuss was about.

Her beating was pretty short, her spasming muscles not giving her a chance to react as her head was slammed against the tree, a fist to her healing gut, and a throw into another tree. But she did feel she got some kind of victory over him by a well-timed spasm in her leg, her boot glancing his jaw as she was lifted and thrown. She was able to move again just as he was finishing up with Alex and threw his bat away. Leela clicked on a pokeball and Machoke came out in the regular way, helping the headstrong, ambitious grunt to her feet. Standing and able to move again, she put the pokemon back into the ball, after a bit of argument between the two of them.

She shuffled back to the camp and leaned against a tree nearby Max, one arm held over her gut, as the pain that had finally died down from the Gym attack had, again, flared up. Stupid Silver bastard, once she got in some position of power, she'd be sure to make his life a living hell. Guy wouldn't even fight somewhat fair, had to subdue everyone before beating them, Alex was a mad-dog idiot, but at least he wasn't afraid to beat the hell out of everyone withing batting range. Granted, it was probably because he was zubat-shit crazy, but still, that wasn't the point here...

"So boss,"She said, a bit of a pant going as she spoke, voice low enough to not be heard by anyone but Max,"What'd Silver-boy want with us? Something about screwing up? Who screwed up, and anything we can do about it? Say the word and I can probably do it."

Mayu didn't think that she had ever experienced a pain greater than what she was going through right now. She laid limp on the ground, coughing and spitting out blood brought up from the numerous kicks to her stomach. The pain in her rear was now a vanished memory in comparison to the burning sensation in her stomach, and the headache throbbing from being kicked in the head once. Her vision was blurred and her ears were ringing. All she could do was lay on the ground and try to recover at least half of her senses. Even her mouth could taste nothing but the iron in her blood. During her punishment, she had faded in and out of consciousness but now she was fully conscious and aware of her pain.

Ellie's eyes narrowed when the man released the Butterfree. She didn't stand a chance, being so close to it as it started to release yellow spores. The ground hit her face as she fell flat, unable to see what was happening. Her arms and legs wouldn't move properly. She tried not to panic, it had to wear off eventually right?

Unfortunately, eventually wasn't fast enough. After a few yelps and shouts from Mayu, the heavy footsteps stopped in front of her. A boot edged under her stomach and flipped her up. She thought he was grinning. He kicked her in the face, her vision now restricted to the grass. Unable to protect herself, the foot to her stomach hurt like hell. Still, they weren't his main target, and he moved on. She heard him move around the camp, each grunt voicing their protests loudly.

Her fingers moved. She opened and closed her hand slowly, trying get enough sensation back to move her head. It was hard for her to stay in a position in which she was virtually blind. Finally as she heard the wings of the bird pokemon fade away, she got up, turning to the side to spit out some blood. I think my tooth is loose...

She got up slowly and walked over to Mayu, who looked like she got a lot more punishment than the others. She smiled and kicked her again for good measure before walking over to the Lieutenant. Memories of having to experiment with first aid from her various childhood sufferings came in handy as she picked up the now half empty bottle of alcohol that he had dropped. She wet her hat with the liquid, trying to use as little as she could, before walking over to Leels. "Move please." She knelt on the other side of them and started to clean the cuts around Max's face. She tried not to use it all up, he would probably be wanting a drink...

Max blinked and there was Leels, groaning in pain next to him.

"What'd Silver-boy want with us? Something about screwing up? Who screwed up, and anything we can do about it? Say the word and I can probably do it."

He tried to speak but the pain in his throat from where Ridner had choked him briefly made him gag. Waiting until that pain died down, he turned to her.

"Don't fail the next mission. Lavander town must... We take it. Can't... let the boss down..." he wheezed.

Alex did this.

"...bastard." he said with a grimace. Leels could go to hell. Team Yellow could go to hell. Alex, he deserved worse than hell.

His head was pounding, a headache throbbing along in harmony with all the rest of his body. Then there was fresh pain. He grunted, suffering as he felt hands rubbing something fiery across his face and where his skin lay broken. The brass knuckles Ridner used left gashes across his face. He lay still for a bit before forcing himself up into a sitting position.

"No need to... nurse me... damn..."

The hands were surprisingly gentle and he looked up to see Ellie's battered face staring down at him. He felt disgusted with himself about how much he was enjoying being touched, even if it was an agonizing experience. Without telling it to his body folded back down onto the ground and the fire in his back flared up again.

It's the vodka. There's nothing. I'm still just the punk I was. I need power...

Laying broken on the ground wasn't gaining him any respect. He may have taken a worse pounding than the rest of them but he wasn't going to be shown up by Alex's squeeze. Pushing away Ellie, he forced himself to his feet. He stood unsteadily, his legs burning with pain and he grit his teeth.

"Well, get to sleep! We take Lavander tomorrow or the boss will send someone worse than Ridner. Someone look after the Commander!"

It was a brave front but everyone knew how battered he was. How weak he was.

You fucking drunk, you worthless piece of shit. How are you ever going to move up?

Max could hear voices in his head, the lieutenants of his past praising him and berating him.

"I'm going to lie down." said Max, walking over to where he had set up his sleeping bag. A fierce wind had begun to blow, blowing his hat away from the top of his bag. Max was in no condition to chase it. He collapsed onto the bag and rested, too hurt to sleep, too tired to think and too humiliated to drink.

If there is a god, let him give me a break.
