Finally, it seemed like the crowd of Growlithes were thinning. Ellie sighed in release: her pokemon were beat. Her Ponyta had several bite marks up her legs, and her Nidorina was battered as well. The Zubat had gotten off easy, with just a few smudges of soot around its wings, since it stayed in the air using Confuse Ray. "AWOOOOOOO!" Ellie barely had time to turn as a bright bundle of fur and fire tackled her Ponyta to the ground.

"Ponyta!?" Ellie shrieked in surprise and terror. She would have tried to throw the Arcanine off her Ponyta herself if she weren't completely terrified of it. The full grown Arcanine had its teeth locked around the pokemon's neck, countering hard, flailing hooves with its large paws. She had no choice. She retreat the Ponyta, calling the Nidorina to her side. Ironically, Ellie didn't like dogs. More precisely, she was scared of dogs. It's roar didn't help, nor the fact that it was her height. Order Nidorina to attack. Order it to attack! But she had frozen. She couldn't give the order. Before it could get to her Nidorina, the Zubat appeared out of nowhere, screeching and flying it the Arcanine's face. The pokemon roared, enough to scare the Zubat away, but enough time for the Nidorina to scamper into the crowd of pokemon and trainers.

The Arcanine then turned and plowed into the other rocket's pokemon, taking out rows of the unsuspecting Ratata, Zubat, and Ekans.

Caid gleefully pounded on one poor officer, while her Ekans and Koffing have quite the tough fight with this new wave of Growlithes. They shot flames out at pretty much every bark, nicking the buzzing Beedrill, as well as the Koffing. Caid had to lean back and pant a bit, having worn herself down a bit with all the fighting that occurred. During that, unbeknownst to her, one officer came up behind her with a billy club, and was gonna bash her in the head! Luckily, Sandy was there, and clocked the man in the head with a brick, helping Caid up.

"Heh, ya saved my ass, Sandy..." She says, giving him a quick hug. He nods, and calls back his Beedrill, which now has one wing on fire, and Caid calls back her Koffing, which seemed like it wanted to explode. She let our her Magnemite, and Sandy let out a Geodude. Those two, teaming with Caid's still-going-strong Ekans ended up finally beating the three cops that attacked them before. They officers called back their unconscious Growlithes and limped away as Caid gave her boy a slap on the back of congratulations.

Two shadowy people emerged from around the corner, walking down the alley past the fleeing officers.

The Arcanine burnt its way through all of the grunt Pokemon next to the Primeape. The fighting Pokemon kept swinging and missing the nimble dog Pokemon. A successful punch did manage to make the Pokemon yelp but a final jet of flame started fires along the thick matted fur of the Primeape. Screaming with rage, the fighting Pokemon jumped forward but only accomplished hitting the wall instead of the police officer's Pokemon.

"Yes... Do it!" shouted the eldest officer. The remaining Growlithes surrounded and bit at the Primeape whilst the Arcanine made its way over to Ellie. The Nidorina kicked at its legs but the snarling beast turned and bit deep into its side causing it to yell out in pain. It jumped up and took the Zubat hovering before Ellie in its mouth, shaking it until it dropped unconscious. It glared at Ellie and the Rattata from another grunt that was hiding behind her leg.

He's losing.

Come Will, we'll save him.

Where's father?

Behind.

WHY IS IT COMING BACK Rage and fear alternated in Ellie's head. Her Nidorina had circled back around after losing the Arcanine, still trying to protect her. Unfortunately, the Arcanine hadn't forgotten about it, coming back. She would have been proud of the small pokemon, except it still lost, and now this dog was walking back up to her. It was low to the ground, as if it were going to pounce. If she wasn't paralyzed, she would have noticed the Ratata, and thrown it in the Arcanine's face and booked it out of there.

But in her state of mind, this Arcanine was about to EAT HER.

It was going to viciously tear into her and drink her blood.

With her already violent thoughts, it wasn't hard to imagine she was about to come to a gruesome and messy end.

The Arcanine jumped, sailing in the air towards Ellie. The Rattata behind her scampered away. A form rushed in and hit the Pokemon in the side. It was Max's Nidorino crashing into the dog's side. It growled in pain, getting up before the Nidorino could stomp down on it and let out a torrent of flame. Flinching back at the ferocity of the fire, the Nidorino circled around and prepared for another charge.

"MAXIE!" shouted Alex waving, smiling.

"Alex." replied Max curtly, looking at the situation. Growlithes had left the unconscious form of Alex's Primeape and were shooting balls of flame at the Golbat above them. The right wing of the Golbat was engulfed in fire and it was screeching terribly.

The grunts who came with Max filed in, hands on their balls but they froze when they saw Max's Nidorino vanish in a jet of massive flames. The Pokemon took four unsteady steps towards its foe and keeled over. The Arcanine jumped up towards the trainers and the officers rushed up towards the new grunts.

"So glad you could join us, you can go to jail like the res-" began the Constable in charge before he ducked, wide eyed.

The Arcanine sailed over the heads of cop and grunt alike, smashing into a wall with tremendous force and collapsing in a heap. A whiskered Pokemon holding two spoons stared at the cops. The remaining Growlithes yelped in fear and ran towards the officers. Shifting its gaze to the dogs, the Pokemon closed its eyes and the Growlithes fell one by one.

"Its late officer. Shouldn't you take your men home? I'm sure they wouldn't mind getting some sleep." said a voice. A tall, masked man wearing a pink suit walked slowly towards the Alakazam. He wore a tall, golden top hat and walked with a silver cane.

"Who..."

"It would be better if you just went home."

Sandy was hunched over by the nearest wall, hacking out a lung from all the exertion he was doing. Caid was patting his back a little when she sees the two figures start to get closer. One was a woman in a suit the shade of a Magikarp's scales, and the other was a shorter boy dressed in a suit the same color as a the night sky. Caid growled and backed up, not knowing what to make of these two. They didn't look like cops, but that didn't mean anything.

Feeling nauseous and faint, Ellie leaned against the fence. The air felt like daggers in her lungs. All her pokemon were gone now. It felt oddly lonely. But they were saved it seemed, by a group of allies and strangers. The police were slinking away with their tails between their legs. Ellie, for her part, didn't move from her spot. She closed her eyes, fighting back the bile in her throat. Get it together. We need to go. We need to leave. Despite her attempts to get it together, all she could think about was that mutt, and how her heart stopped when it lunged at her.

When the police fled, the masked strangers coming from Caid's side of the alley met up with the man in the pink suit.

"You weren't supposed to be here." the pink man addressed to Alex.

"You're supposed to be out of this fucking country." snarled Alex. He had been tending to his Primeape with a potion and only now seemed to notice the trio of trainers.

"You haven't changed Alex. Even though you're an older boy, you're still just in the shadow of your brother." mused the woman in red. She had a cruel little smile on her face and there was a hint of menace in all her words.

"I'm sorry, I've been impolite." said the man, turning to all of the Rockets as Alex glared at the woman.

"My name is Charles." bowed the tall man.

"I'm Kat." said the woman, smiling that little smile.

"...I'm Will." said the teenager with a soft voice.

The masks hid their eyes but the rest of their face could be seen clearly. The woman was beautiful and the man was on the cusp of aging. The boy, Will, stood a head shorter than Kat. His face was impossible to read.

"We're the Clement family. We're circus performers, underground gangsters and presently partners with your boss Giovanni."

A pokeball floated from Charles' belt, landing in his hand as he recalled the Alakazam.

"We know his plans and will co-operate. As a token of our alliance, we've taken the time to clear the way out of the city for you."

"Our family is small but more than a match for the scarce number of police running around the outskirts."

Alex just continued to glare, Max answered.

"Thank you. I'm sure the boss will appreciate it."

"You should get on your way. Saffron is not yet safe for Rockets. Especially weak little girls." said Kat, not sparing as so much as a glance for the female grunts in the alley.

"Oh and Max, do take care in Lavander Town. The tower is rather tall there." said Charles quietly.

That statement threw Max for a loop. What were these circus clowns up to? It didn't matter though, he knew he couldn't take on that Alakazam. He didn't even know what the woman had or the boy. The boy, Will, kept staring at him. It made him uneasy.

"I'll... keep that in mind."

"Where's Daniel?" demanded Alex suddenly, bat at the ready. Max had never seen Alex like this before. He had seen Alex batshit insane, quiet and composed, furious but never... afraid?

"Put that thing away boy." said Charles dismissively, waving his hand. The bat was yanked out of Alex's hands as if an invisible Machamp had picked it up. It floated down slowly to his feet.

"I don't know where Daniel went and frankly I don't care." said the woman, laughing. "He was ever such a fool. He thought he could master my sister and-"

"Kat, stop. We're not here to prattle on about old matters. Get out of this city now Alex, we won't save you the next time the cops come out with the big guns."

Without a word Charles and Kat vanished into thin air. Will however lingered.

"..."

"Will was it?"

The boy looked towards him and Max could feel the eyes through the mask, glaring into his own. He stared back at the mask, wondering when the freak would leave. Suddenly there was a feeling of dread within him and a flash of the memory was in his mind for an instant. Max felt sick.

He knows! HE KNOWS! How.. what? I'll kill him!

Max struggled to keep his emotions to himself, clenching a fist but forcing himself to be still. The boy smiled and laughed. He pulled out a few Pokecapsules from behind his back and dropped them in front of the Grunts.

"Take them. We'll meet again Max." he said sweetly and vanished like the other two. Max composed himself quickly.

"Fucking creeps. Rockets, lets move."

The grunts opened the capsules, revealing potions, revives and even a little bit of money.

"Later, move now!" said Alex, remembering that he was in charge. He picked up the bat and shouted at his tools. The grunts all ran behind Alex, back the way Max had taken them but Ellie stood still. Grabbing her hand, Max forced her to run with him.

"Come on, we don't have all night. We've got to get back on track or the boss will do worse than toss us in jail."

Weak. I was weak. I am weak. They only reason her feet were moving was so that the Lieutenant wouldn't be dragging her by her arm out of Saffron. Her hand ached: he was holding onto her wounded wrist. It would probably be bloody by the time they stopped.

What kind of tool became scared? Had to be rescued? The three people that appeared earlier were strong. Stronger than the Yellow team combined. Stronger than the Commander. She had lost the battle, and she deserved to be punished for her failure.

Ellie stayed silent until they had passed the Saffron walls, and had started running out into the fields. "I... I'm sorry, Lieutenant. I'm not a good tool."

"Alex calls grunts tools, I call grunts grunts." muttered Max. He was still shaken by the thought that Will had read his mind. He didn't know for sure but that feeling...

"That beast was beyond us. The cops do have strong trainers scattered about."

Nidorino went down so fast... I'm sure we'll see that one again.

"Why are you afraid of dogs?"

He had seen the look on her face when the flaming dog was leaping towards her.

She flinched. The question caught her off guard. "S-sir?" She wanted to pretend she didn't hear him. "It was something... a long time ago. Years ago. It's not an excuse for what happened." She twisted her hand a little, a sharp pain briefly replacing the dull one. "When I was smaller. One attacked me. But no one saved me then." She finally sighed.

She was dying for a smoke, adrenaline still pumping, but decided against it. The drug was a reward, and she didn't deserve it right now.

Dylan was relieved to finally see a person that he knows.
"Scott? Is that really you? Thank God, I finally found a rocket member..."
He sat at the ground, resting for a while. He hasn't had a good rest for quite a while, and it was nice to finally be able to take a breather.
"So, where are the others?"

"It was after the runt of a rat behind you, not you. I can't afford to lose another grunt."

The boss will already be angry.

"Can you walk on your own?"

During the dash out of Saffron he had been holding onto her arm, running. It was as if she had lost her wits.

Its just a stupid Pokemon... Women...

Ellie was about to reply when Alex slowed down to talk to them.

"Well well Maxie, I see you've taken a liking to my wildcat. Look out, she bites."

Max ignored that.

"The boss will learn about the two grunts you lost. You know one of the grunts here is an informer as much as I do."

Zubats were always in the air with messages tied to them, flying back to Celadon with daily reports. Giovanni was not one to leave his missions to chance and was updated on all his teams every day.

"And I still haven't been able to find that one tool. Oh well, I'm sure the boss won't mind me causing a riot in our wake." said Alex, swinging casually at Max's head. Max ducked.

"As fast as ever Maxie. Just remember I haven't forgotten about this morning..."

The girl. Hopefully that biker will look out for her.

"When you decided to camp stupidly close to Saffron?"

Alex grinned and swung again. Another duck. It was obvious Alex had been drinking and there was a long way to go. Max had no idea what he had been doing in Saffron but it was obvious it wasn't rioting. Alex gave Ellie's back a slap and ran off ahead.

The night sky over Viridian City was picturesque. The new balloon floated silently toward the town as James sat back and smiled. Jesse was still asleep, their newest Pokemon cuddling against her lap. He remembered the boss's words well. 'You are the ones keeping the police running around the country. You are the ones the public wants taken. You are the ones who will give me my victory.'

The hit was going to be the Pewter city museum but the boss wanted smaller robberies along the way. Make noise and inspire awe. That was their method. The Meowth was a gift from the boss and Jesse both loved it and hated it. It was peculiar as it was capable of saying a few words. Most of them swears.

James nudged Jessie's foot with his own, his lover's eyes opening slowly.

"I was having the greatest dream..."

"Oh yeah?"

"We were stealing Pokemon from Koga and he couldn't stop us."

She smiled and James laughed. He turned down the burner and the balloon started to descend. He looked over the edge and into the city. There was little activity but the shape of a boy came out of the Pokecenter and struck north for the forest. Some young punk trainer no doubt.

"Bitches!" said Meowth quietly, yawning. James laughed and Jesse scowled.

"Why can't you say something useful for a change?" she said, slapping the cat Pokemon. They landed in a backyard with a dull thunk. James adjusted his new, shining white uniform.

"They're going to love our new uniforms. I hope they take plenty of pictures!" said Jesse, adjusting her ridiculous hairstyle. It was true that James sometimes was annoyed by the long red hair, held together by spray and willpower alone. It often slapped him in the face. Still, it was her.

"We'll show them our Rocket spirit!"

"Prepare for trouble James!" she said, winking naughtily as they rolled out of the balloon. The two of them snaked their way over to the local bank. Nothing ever went wrong for them!

She kept her mouth shut while they talked about the mess they had gotten into. The Commander had a point in that they did cause a riot, among other things. But the Lieutenant had a point too. They had lost a lot of supplies (although the capsules did have enough for her to heal her pokemon when they had a chance).

When the Commander ran off, she realized she hadn't replied to the Lieutenant yet. "Yes, Lieutenant. Sorry." She jerked her arm back. "...Thank you. Sir." Honestly, she had expected a little more than a slightly unkind word about not being able to run by herself, since Yellow seemed to be more strict than Blue.

"Um... I'm sorry about your Nidorino." She didn't really know what else to say. Even though she knew that he wouldn't care tremendously about it, it was his main pokemon. But would he be angry about having to waste it on her? Her eyes darted instinctively to his waist, where she noticed something strange. "Lieutenant? ...Did you lose your whip?" As far as she could remember, all the Lieutenants had one. A painful punishment that left more marks than a beating.

"I wasn't strong enough." said Max, the words sticking in his throat like tar. It burned him knowing that the cops still could kick his ass. Even after all these years he felt just as helpless as that kid with a Nidoran... "Good thing those masks showed up. They're strong but no match for the Rocket elite."

When I get my suit, I'm going to train everyday. No punkass Pokemon with a spoon is going to scare me.

He was glad he didn't have to pull her along anymore. He tried hard not to show any one grunt differently than the others.

They're all the same. I'm better than them. I'm smarter than them.

"Lieutenant? ...Did you lose your whip?"

The question was not a new one.

"Alex prefers to do his own discipline. Myself? Fuck up and I'll punch the shit out of you. Don't freeze up on us again or I will pound you into the dirt and let the cops take care of you. Its bad enough I have to babysit a child for this team. Carry your fucking weight and don't be weak. We need grunts who are fearless, we've got too many cowards."

I wonder if that Damian and the other grunt that's missing were taken or just left...

Two grunts were unaccounted for, the rest Max was bringing back with Alex. Max didn't like losing grunts. Less Pokemon around.

They walked on, Max taking off his hat to wipe the sweat off his shaved head. He would need to shave again soon.

"Yes, Lieutenant." she saluted. She kept turning her head to look at him once in a while, studying him. Was it too much of a hassle to punish her now? Probably, seeing as they were still bolting out of Saffron. Of all the things to run into when they were trying to escape though...

It was actually a Growlithe that had bit her when she was younger, but it was almost her size, just like the Arcanine. When it opened its mouth, she was sure it could have bit her head off.

But those were just excuses. She was too weak. She couldn't even guarantee that it would be different next time. The only thing she could do was train her pokemon to protect her better, so next time she would be the one doing the killing.

"We need grunts who are fearless, we've got too many cowards."

"Sounds like you hit a sore spot, Whitey." Leels said as she threw her elbow over Max's shoulder, a smirk plastered on her face.

"So, boss, what's the story there, hmmmmm? You freeze up before we came along or something?"

"Freeze up, I have no idea what you're talking about." said Max, shrugging the arm off his shoulder.

"It's just Ellie here has a fear of police dogs it seems."

Max didn't like how familiar Leels tried to act with him. He was irritated by it.

I'm your officer.

Ellie jumped when she heard Leels, whirling to face her and Max. She was jumpy when it came to her large blind spot, especially since she didn't hear Leels until she was right next to them. She wondered why someone like her would join the Rockets.

"It's just Ellie here has a fear of police dogs it seems."
Arcanines

She only corrected the Lieutenant in her head, however. She would prove next time that she wasn't afraid of Growlithes. Wasn't too afraid.

Ellie also remembered that she owed him as well. She made a mental note to repay her debt when she had the chance.

In the Barn, Mayu had buried herself near completely under a pile of hay. It was nice and cool, which was good for her right now. When she heard someone coming in, she poked her head out just a bit, seeing that Dylan was talking to Scott. Hearing him ask about the others, she said. "I'm here too, and Max told me to come here while he did something fun. I know he doesn't like me, but I'm a rocket too. It's not fair that he left me out of the fun." She didn't know what 'fun' Max was having but she wanted to cause mischief too!
