I use my own name because I'm boring.
As do I. Unless there's a canon name (ie Link, Issac). DAO was the only one I got creative. And by "creative" I mean naming my PC after LOTR or Forgotten Realms characters.

If I don't use my own name, unless their name really suits them I'm likely to change it. My favourite thus far has been Madiken the Black Mage, from FF9. His original name was Vivi, and I still think mine was better. Daro the Hero of Time was alright too.

I used to use my own name all the time, because I really like my name, but after a while I noticed that I kept using it for characters that ended up doing silly things that I would never do, so I had to stop. It was a good call, though I still use it for Pokemon!

I used to invent my own when I was a kid, and give them Awesome McCool names. Then I grew out of it. There didn't seem to be much point when I was only changing like one name in the whole game. Now, I only come up with my own if I'm required to, or if the default name sucks.

I think the only time I gave everyone stupid names was in FF7. I played that so many times that I inevitably had to do one where I gave people puns for names.

Oh wait... come to think of it, a frankly obscene number of old N64 games had the main character named "Penis" too... yeah I was that mature...

Kalem. Every damn time.

Reading the replies here, though, has made me think that I should start giving them funny names, too. It's been a while since I've laughed this hard.

I have no naming conventions when it comes to RPG characters, although most of the names I choose are ridiculous. My Fallout 3 characters were named Luung, Pruntlehorn, and Asscrothu. My New Vegas characters are named Luung (same build, same appearance, and same morality as the first one), Phonebook, and Ragnar. You get the picture.

In most games I use GBlair88, GBlair or a_softcushion and in Mass Effect I used Blair Shepherd.

Yes I'm unimaginative.

Although I did go with the highly mature and original Pissflaps and Fagballs as two of my three Mount and Blade characters.

I named my evil character in Fallout 3 "Willie 'Double-Barrels' McGee"
He was not a nice person.

I was thinking of naming my Legion-following New Vegas character something like "John Caesar's-Legion Smith" and go around telling everybody that it was a coincidence..

For male characters: Gareth or Adrian. For Female characters: Amy or Audrey. Unless the default name is better. Which is usually isn't.

I rarely take the default name. Nothing against the developers for creating it, but it just seems lazy to choose it. I try my best to come up with a nice sounding name from another game or anime. Recently, I named my Phantasy Star Portable character Kannagi, after being introduced to the anime.

I've taken to using Auldous lately, not entirely sure why. Normally it's either my name or a random generated name, if the game has a name generator.

I guess this only really happens in RPGs, but if this isn't the case let me know.

So in most RPGs, especially older ones, you're given the option to name your character because their are no voice files for others or you're given a predetermined title.

So do you often keep the character's name the given one, or do you always come up with your own? DO you have any names you often use, and if so, why?

I often use Revan, Rand, or G-man. Awsome Sith lord, Dragon Reborn, and my old nickname. Depending on the game, and the level of immersion I want with the character, I'll just leave the given name in.
I think dragon reborn is copyrighted by wheel of time. I'm not certain though.

I always play my RPGs as Lord Tiberius Wolffenhoussen III Esquire. It usually needs to be shortened to fit.
