Actually it was three, Johnny didn't make any appearences in Metal Gear, Metal Gear 2, Portible Ops or MGS2.
Johnny appears in MGS2, just hold up your Direction Mic at the second silo-thing when Emma is behind it while walking across the pontoon bridge and you'll trigger a scene with him.

On topic: I teared up perpetually during MGS4, all of it made me break down. The return to Shadow Moses and "The Best Is Yet To Come", the final fight had me on the edge of my chair for the unequaled epicness and the real endings just had me sulking my shirt wet. And just like Snake in his present condition this game made me feel old because Light knows how long I've been a follower in the Console War.
I never saw that scene with Johnny in MGS2.

and I'm with you on the feeling old part. Been here since MGS1, think i was 14. being 20 now I actually felt my age at that moment.

Yes, you can hear Johnny and more crap humor with the D-Mic while covering Emma as she crosses between struts.

I never even played the first 3 games, and I still fell in love with all the characters and now compare all games on this guideline:
Out of 20:
10 for being a good game.
10 for being a Metal Gear game.

Spoilerage here:

The instant you get to play the Metal Gear Solid in snakes little dream sequence, I was gobsmacked. Absolutely awesome. And then the combination of nostalgia, beautiful music and imagery of Shadow Moses sealed the deal. The falling camera was synchronised with a slight judder.

Through the microwave room I was mashing triangle and consistently yelling "Don't die on me man, we've come way to far!"

The battle at the end was all about the music and epic feeling.

Overall a masterpiece ... don't listen to the haters

(Sorry just joined the forum so not quite fluent with the ins and outs of presentation of spoilers)

Damn, same thing here, that triangle smashing hurt the hell out of my fingers, and my throat, my parents thought I was crazy.

Even better, when you're at Shadow Moses in MGS4, if you put the camera above Snake's head after a while he starts saying "Yeah, overhead view. Now you're talkin'! Overhead view! Just awesome! Overhead view!"

That made my day.

I got MGS2 used and put up with the horrible, HORRIBLE game mechanics and asinine story up until the point I was expected to wait for the wind to move a flag so I could shoot some C4 sensor. Then I said "fuck this" and returned it.

The sad thing is I had bought MGS3 months before that (and have yet to open it), and wished dearly that I had known how terrible MGS2 was so I wouldn't have bothered.

Well, have you played MGS1? That was amazing, I recommend buying Twin Snakes for GC and then looking up major points in the story for MGS2(since you cant handle it) THEN play MGS3 and MGS4.

In a way, yes. Allow me to say this, the games have a lot of unnecessary dialog. The first one in the Solid series was a very different game for its time, I enjoyed it a whole lot because it was cinematic(as much as it could be for its time) and was just a lot of fun in its inventive boss fights and what not. MGS 2 was a bit batshit when I played it and I never really fully understood it until I just recently played number 4. MGS3 needs no prior understanding to the series since it dates back before the others in the series. So perhaps you'd be best off playing number 3 then 1, 2, and 4.

Once you learn what you should listen to and what you can doze off during a cutscene/codec conversation, you'll enjoy the series a lot more. I know I did =P

Personally, if a game can deliver nothing but a story, I don't feel it's a good game. I think Kojima would have been better suited to a movie. He could be a more nonsensical David Lynch.

I on the other hand, love story-driven games. I believe he is making a film about the Solid series though...so you're right in thinking that is more of his forte. The gameplay in all the games i've felt were pretty solid and Metal Gear Online is also loads of fun except for the fact that I get headshot'd every time I spawn from a guy who just turned the corner, raised his gun, and got said headshot.

Edit:Sorry if it seems like i'm trying to sell you the game, I just really fell in love with the series with number 4.

The hold trigger, hold square, release square to shoot pistol in first person is inexcusable, and the "leave the room and there's no alarm" and infinite enemies in MGS2 are absurd.

Its been a while since I've played 2, so your gripes are valid. Which is why you dont have to bother with number 2, everyone treats it as the red headed step child of the series anyways(well, for the most part). You can just read up on it if you want, however, don't play the games if you aren't in it for a lot of story.

Well, it's not like I can return three, and I refuse to sell it to GameStop, so maybe I'll try that.

EDIT: although i could really really do without the Meryl/Johnny discussing the marraige shooting FROGS cutscene. I swear that was done in a movie somewhere and it didn't look good there either.
Thank you! Finally, someone who agrees with me on this part.

Interesting how people bring up the microwave scene. When the triangle disappeared, but I was still a couple meters from the door, I thought "This is either a brilliantly plateau of scenes of climactic glory surrounding the final stand, or the worlds most depressing game over."
It was fantastic in terms of creating tension. My fingers were numb and bleeding by that time and I was literally willing Snake to make it to the end.
