...You are wrong. Granted, you get the wailing and the gnashing of teeth and the cries of OMG WTF VALV TF2 SUXX NOW ILL NEVER PLAY AGAIN after every major update, but due to the nature of this one, the cries will be louder and more persistent, given that you can now buy in-game items for real money. Allow me to explain why this update does not mean TF2 as we know it is gone:

1. People cannot 'buy their way to the top'.
None of the unlockables (with a few exceptions) are outright 'replacements' and indisputably better than the original; it's all a matter of personal taste and the situation at hand. Also, what good is a new Direct Hit or Huntsman if you don't know how to use it well, or can't play an FPS to save your life?

2. No one is forcing you to buy things.
Everything that affects gameplay can be earned the old-fashioned way, so quit your whining. Also, in my opinion, most of the hats that you (presumably) can only get through purchasing are pretty lame.

2a. Valve is not screwing you over.
They've given you three years of maps, weapons and more content for free, and it looks like it'll stay that way. They're not taking the Activision route of charging extra for things that they should've had in the first place, and thank Christ for that.

3. Don't pretend you aren't going to use the system.
Now, for just a few bucks, you can get that Hotrod or Fro that has eluded you for years!

And hey, you may not like the ability to buy things, but now you can rename and recolor your stuff! W00t!

That's all for now; I'm going to go play and hope I get a Sydney Sleeper...

EDIT: In one evening, I managed to craft the Sleeper and find the Darwin's Danger Shield! Yay! I must say, the Sleeper is totally awesome, and it's great that I don't need to worry about getting headshots now, because I've never been that great a sniper.

I like the new system, I bought the Scout's gun from there and got a new hat (which looks great on the Heavy). I know one person that is a Primevil Warrior and got barely any hats, so he spent the £30 on the full Polycount Pack. I'm gonna save up and buy the Soldier's pack or the Spy's pack.

I also fucking love the spy's new knife, and the Scout's gun, and the sniper rifle is pretty good. All I need is the crocodile hat and I've completed the set for the Sniper.

TF2 was ruined forever when they made the first class-specific update. The balance was gone, and you had to grind.
The pay system just takes out a lot of the grind for those who are too busy to bother with that shit.

I'd get behind it if the items were 1 or 2 bucks and the items were all craftable. But twenty bucks for a single pack? That's insane. Buying the items would come up to far more than the game itself, which is just unacceptable.

The sniper rifle is overpowered, or I'm just that damn good ;)
I don't see a way to sell items like they promised. But I do like all the new shiny items. I have no money and never plan to buy anything because I can't, but I am looking forward to getting the danger darwins shield.

I agree with you. The new system is not bad or game-breaking. In fact, it's great for community modders as a way to get their content out to the general public and get a slice of the profits for themselves. It's just surprising that Valve would put microtransactions into their game, as they've never been one to suck the money out of their customers.

2. Nobody is forcing you to buy anything--yet.

I'm not saying they will, but one of the reasons people are concerned is because this sets a dangerous precedent. And permissiveness here likely translates to more fees down the line.

I don't care, honestly. I'm not complaining the end of the world is coming. Just saying, there's a valid argument here.

I dont mind the new system. It's just added the rest another way for valve to make money. They've given us A LOT of content over the years. So we shouldn't be complaning.

I would've been concerned about microtransaction, but the extra items don't really give you an advantage and neither do the hats.

I think they made everything so expensive to keep people from just buying up everything. This may seem weird, but I think VALVe put the system in there, just to show that they could, but don't actually WANT people to use it much. Seriously, who would pay $18 for a hat? I certainly wouldn't, but now VALVe has shown that the option is available.

All the iems give an advantage depending on how they are used. It just comes down to how they are used and the situation they are used in.

For example, a sniper with all the new weapons cannot be killed by headshots and has +25 health, but he can no longer score headshots or have a sidearm apart from the knife. Because of this, he becomes more suited for support sniping, as quick jarate shots will deliver a de-buff at ong range, while the new knife will provide some defense against a harrassing scout if he can land one rifle shot.

However, I will say that the new spy stuff is OP in the hands of an expert with a dead ringer. If you can get inside the lines, then you can do a LOT of damage.

You know "Valve ruined TF2 forever" every time an update was released.

And you're right, if this was Activision, every single update would have cost $15 each and we would need a subscription to play it.

That sniper set, do headshots just get you down to 1hp, or what? Or just count as a bodyshot
Either way, when I get it, I shall be a GOD.

Oh no.
How terrible.

OT: I say good on Valve; they've found a way to make a bit of extra money and improve the experience for people put off by the prospect of grinding.

I stockpiled weapons for the update.

I managed to craft 5 new weapons! And got a free hat from someone so it's all good at the moment.

I doubt that I'll buy any hats, because I like the feeling when you get one.

Yeah, headshots reduce your health to 1, but they don't kill you.

Sorry, I'm not too informed on all the new items for spy, so I can't make a proper judgement. I can say though, spy was never a class that was easy to learn or one to have a low skill ceiling. You can get a decent amount of kills but still be a liability to your team for doing almost-useless things.
