Even if it isnt as good as "the good old days" (just 11 years ago, though), it is at least more in the spirit of Fallout than Fallout Tactics and Fallout BoS, that at least i think most of us can agree on. And that it is better that Oblivion on many points...

PS: I am not saying that Fallout Tactics was a bad game. It was Great! But with very little roleplaying opportunities. But the best tactical combat gameplay out there. :)

PS: PS: Ive would rather have had Fallout 3 - Van Buren than Fallout 3 - Oblivion, though... Seriously, the Van Buren engine looked SWEET! Google it on youtube if you havent seen the engine before...
If the original developers made fallout 3 we would have named them god by now.

am I the only one who liked Fallout BoS?

I don't know what peoples problems with it were. Was it because it didn't have the horrendous realism? I don't know what it did that WASN'T fallout.. except for maybe the BAWLS product placement and the lack of drugs.. It was to Fallout what Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance was to Baldur's Gate.

and people LOVED Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance, it spawned a whole new subgenre of hack and slash. BoS had ghouls, radiation, a post apocalyptic world, silly cults worshipping silly things, hookers, lots of guns, super mutants, vaults and power armor, and also one of the niftiest "Fallout" songs as an title piece.

There are certainly worse games, even in that genre. I played through it with a buddy, and we had a blast.

Oh

My

God.

I need this game!

Does anybody say "I've fought crab people more fearsome than you!" at any point?
The 'crabs' are Mirelurks. Completely armored except for their heads. The most annoying enemy in the game ('sides Raiders, in my opinion, anyway).

I've been pleasantly surprised. The quests are enjoyable, the characters quirky if somewhat lacking in different voices, and the combat is fun.
Although Oblivion's caves have been replaced with underground metro. Which you seemingly need to take to get anywhere in the city proper. It's starting to get really fucking annoying.

Put I've got my plasma rifle and a desire to massacre Rivet city, so I'm happy as a clam :)
And I think that's why it's such a great game. It's just an enjoyable experience to dick around.

I'm about 12 or so hours into the game, I've completed a ton of the side missions and half-way through the main quest line.

My opinion? I love it. I've always been a fan of the Elder Scrolls games (Morrowind being my favorite.) so I wasn't particularly bothered when I heard Bethesda was using the Oblivion engine for the sequel to one of my favorite RPG series. I was a bit confused by some of the lore they added (as well as sticking Apple 2 computers everywhere...) I quickly adapted and rather enjoyed some of the changes.

If we're looking at this from an Oblivion standpoint, I will say it works well, Bethesda chucked out the oh-so-annoying Persuasion Mini-game and vastly simplified the Lock Picking Game, making those situations a lot more bearable. However, there are flaws that I wish Bethesda has considered on addressing when it was making FO3. For starters, given that range combat is incredibly important, I wish you had the option of taking cover, hugging a wall, for example, or using sandbags or other debris for cover (You can duck behind stuff in game, but its very awkward.). Given the plethora of grenades and enemies wielding rocket launchers, its down right criminal that you don't have a feature to roll out of the way. Third, your character doesn't seem to strafe very fast, so you'll still be hit by incoming fire. Finally, aiming my weapons was a pain in the ass (Tiny, tiny reticule, not very helpful.) and was heavily reliant on VATS (though, perhaps thats was Bethesda's intention.)

Fallout 3 is the game that Bethesda should have made instead of Oblivion for one reason and one reason only, the combat system while not on par with FPS' actually works for the most part. What irks me is that there is no real reason to even bother using VATS which uses AP while treating the game as a standard FPS' gives you complete freedom to do what you need to do without having to worry about AP. If I were not playing on a console I would never bother with VATS. Furthermore actually travelling around the world is as mind numbingly boring as Oblivion. Seeing the world is fine and all, but when I want to work on a quest I really do not feel like walking all over the place when the developers saw fit to mark the area I need to go to on the map.

"Oblivion with guns" is a much-quoted comment which I wholeheartedly support.
I completely disagree. It's not Oblivion with guns at all. The only actual similarity between Oblivion and Fallout 3 is the engine. Other than that, pretty much nothing. The setting is different, the atmosphere is different, of course the weapons are different, the leveling and skill system are different.

People who like first person role playing games but who thought Oblivion was too easy need to play Fallout 3. It's harder than Oblivion. Even on the easy setting, the monsters or bad guys will kick your butt if you go to the wrong area before you are leveled up enough. There also aren't as many power-ups lying around as there were in Oblivion. The weapons and armor degrade faster. You also don't seem to get the upper hand on trades as easily either. It's more of a challenge than Oblivion is.

If you have played the earlier Fallout games, you'll notice lots of nods to the style, dark humor, basic storyline etc. It is not the same gameplay experience however as the previous Fallout games played more like Diablo II or Neverwinter Nights. Fallout 3 reminds me of a cross between Halflife 2, Oblivion, Deus Ex and Mad Max.

while I too think that Oblivion sort of sucked

I'm glad they made it first

if they didn't

this game would be oblivion, because they thought oblivion was SUPER SUPER SUPER AWESOME when they released it.

lots of people agreed

quite a few didn't.

I'm glad they cut their teeth on Elder Scrolls before tackling Fallout, so they could do it right.

I played Oblivion for a few hours and didn't care much about it.

Because a lot of my friends were talking about Fallout 1+2 as *the shizzle*, as a warmup for Fallout 3 I bought Fallout 1 and 2 and tried playing them. I played for a few hours and didn't really care much about it.

I bought Fallout 3 and fell instantly in love.
It hasn't got the annoying skilllevel through use system as Oblivion, it's much more atmospheric than Oblivion and it hasn't got the old-school isometric perspective of the older Fallouts.

And yes, it is indeed Liam Neeson who voiceacts your daddy

...can you please tell me if the experience in Fallout 3 comes closer to the original Fallout games or to Oblivion?
I a weirdly restrospective way, after 10 hours' solid play it feels like the Oblivion engine was made for a Fallout game. It's a perfect fit. The similarities with Oblivion are largely superficial, though. This is totally the world of Fallout, and it's more gripping than ever.

Has anyone played mass effect yet? It's unreal 3 with psychic powers.
It's totally lame, the originals were better. It feels too much like the other game that used the same engine.

I don't think they could get away with a lot of Fallout 1+2's humour these days. Despite being monumental releases the original two, due to the political climate at the time and the pc platform, were 'cult' games.

Sure they couldn't get away with it probably. But what if they did? Now. Now that would be something I support. Games that arn't shackled by people/political bodies. Left roam free to do whatever it please.(Most likely a bunch of sex/rape games would be everywhere.(Unlike now in which sex and rape is so much worse then some guy killing over 100 people.)

Well the game is a stark contrast to the elder scrolls in many many ways, but the core adventuring feels much the same. I've never played the original fallouts, but this game was way different from oblivion. This game takes some work to enjoy in the beginning, but once you get rolling it really picks it up. it is not oblivion with guns, and it is by no means a crappy game, but I would recommend it...
