I thought this was quite hilarious:

Just goes to show that people have been accusing Dante of being a gay vampire long before his new look.
Along with the fact that the games did have their difficult moments even in normal mode. Not many, but if you are shitty at hack-and-slashing, then yes, you will be stuck at Easy mode.

this is a big reboot, and don't get me wrong, I find the major change a bit much, but it IS a completely new character, named Dante, with a new story and life built-in. Had it been a sequel, like an actual DMC5, then I would join the other hater fans about this. Or if they slapped a new look, called him Dante, called it a reboot, but kept all the ties to the old games, then that, too, would bug the hell out of me.
I think the idea of a prequel video game is itself rather faulty. Video games are all about progress and expansion - better graphics, new play mechanics, etc. When you take DMC, radically improve the visuals, expand the gameplay, and tell everyone "this better-looking, better-playing game takes place before the games you've already played", it doesn't really register.

Besides, I wanted to see a DMC 5 that either takes places after 2 or 4. Seriously. Either clip off that cliffhanger or continue on with the bit where Dante, Trish and Lady blast throught the door ready to kick ass.
I am with you on that one. I've been wondering who the hell was riding the motorcycle in DMC2. It COULD have been Dante, since the games were pretty corny... but then again, it was said the portal closed and he couldn't get out, ever. I mean, Vergil only got out with the help of Mundus.
I see an easy way to fix that too. Something really bad happens. Trish contacts Nero to help get Dante and save the world. You spend the first four or five missions as Nero going to X place to use Yamato to open a gate to hell. During this time you get all the little tutorial stuff out of the way and maybe learn something about his past. Then, for the next five to ten missions, you are Dante in hell. You have to make your way to the gateway Nero opened. Then, the last five to ten mission could be Dante beating the hell out of whatever big bad happens to be threatening the world.
I spent no more than five minutes coming up with this, and honestly I like it.
You know, I do too. But I more expected for the ending of Devil May Cry series to be epic. Main characters dying off in a big war against some of the biggest baddies Dante has fought, like Mundus returning, along with Mundus' father, since Mundus was known as the PRINCE of Darkness, or so I heard in the first game. And all of the Demons pissed off at Sparda return at once to wreak havoc. I expect Nero to have been sneak attacked, thinking he and Kyrie finally found peace, and then Lady would be overwhelmed and killed, of course. Lucia and Trish would die off in some other ways, maybe being taken prisoner, and Dante actually gets HURT for once, instead of God moding everything. I mean, how many times has he been stabbed in the chest? -.-

EDIT: And in the end he gives his life to seal the Demons away once more, just like his father had done, except the seal is more powerful, since he has surpassed his father.
Well... Dante has stupid fast healing powers. The fight between him and Deadpool may be the best example I can give of a fight that would never end.
I'm not sure how much I like everyone dying. I mean Kyrie and Lucia can push up as many daisies as they want to, but the rest had better stay.
Wow that sounds really bad seeing as how that was half of the females in the game.
I think the ending would be better with all the heroes together and Dante getting closure, finally accepting his demon-half. Maybe after fighting Vergil one last time in hell.
I think Vergil accepted his weakness after losing to Dante, and would join a three-way co op with Dante and Nero. Except, Nero wouldn't be able to use DT without Yamato, and I doubt Vergil will accept giving it up to Nero (who may or may not be his son. Remember: half-demons age differently then humans. No one knows Vergil's or Dante's true age.)
I heard somewhere that Dante was supposed to be eighty or something as of DMC 4. I'm sure Vergil had plenty of time to have a kid and send him off to an orphanage before his big plans.
Maybe an illegitimate child? Had sex with one of the random people in that town before leaving? I doubt he would have cared enough to drop his kid off at the door of a church of Sparda. Vergil so doesn't seem the type. To be honest, he seems too into his rivalry with Dante and his hatred of his father to even have sex, y'know?
I looked it up. One of the creators is quoted as saying Dante was 19 in DMC 3 and 28 in DMC (29 in DMC 4 (that guy that told me otherwise was way off)).
Maybe Nero is the reincarnation of Sparda or something. He may have been born the exact moment Sparda died or something and thus blah blah blah. I don't know. Speaking of people dying, in the same quote, its stated that Dante was eight when his mo died.
Hmmm... I swear I saw one of the creators being quoted as saying that Nero was Vergil's son... I may have seen something differently. I don't know, Nero is the most mysterious character out of the entire series, mostly because they gave him no friggin' background and made his arm and his past an entire secret. Especially the part where he tells Kyrie to run, except the fact being that THAT was the day he got his arm changed. I doubt it was the day his hair changed to white and he gained new blood too...
According to the DMC wiki, Nero was hinted at being Vergil's son in the DMC 4 novel and confirmed by a Capcom employee at an event in 2009. So yes, he's Vergil's kid.
Whooo. And wait... DMC4 novel? Crap... I need to get that one... But now we come to the question... Vergil must've been... 10 when he had Nero... which makes no sense. Soooo... I think they screwed up their own story again.

Just like they said Vergil AND Dante's mother were killed by demons, yet Vergil was never killed.

Speaking of, I would like to know what happened between Vergil and Dante in the first place, to make Vergil go off on his own, and when, and what his true intents were. I know most were mentioned as him just wanting more power, but there could be more, since he was partly human, no matter how much he despised it.

EDIT: And yeah, I made that reference to many forums about this: His blood, the only one other than Dante to be able to wield and control/fix Yamato, the Devil Trigger, the name Nero (Nero Angelo). And funny because everything in DMC4 ended with Angelo. Well... the bosses did. Credo was considered Credo Angelo after transforming, I think, same with Sanctus.
Actually... Sanctus became Sanctus Diabolus.
As far as Vergil's quest for power goes, I think it was something about blaming his mother's death on her weakness. Her weakness being her humanity. Thus he seeks to become stronger to the point where he would deny his own humanity.
Dante on the other hand blamed the demons that attacked her. He then goes out of his way to kill as many demons as he can. Going as far as trying to deny his own demonic heritage.
It makes for a great yin-yang kinda thing.
It does, but even Vergil wouldn't kill Dante, and not just because Dante was the superior. He did still have a human side, and I think, just as Dante felt love for his more-demon brother (sort of), Vergil must have felt a little love for his more-human brother, since they WERE still related. Vergil wasn't completely heartless.

And when I say "more-Demon/more-Human" I mean the blood they choose to accept most, ya know? I mean, he clung to his mother's amulet tightly, showing he at least held something from his mother close to his heart. I doubt it was just because of his want of Sparda's sword.

Though this may all be because I'm a big "Good side in all" kind of person, albeit quite pessimistic.

I would love to have more BOOKS that give detailed backgrounds to both Vergil and Nero, but I wouldn't want them to have their own crappy spin-off games. Those never work. Look at Shadow the Hedgehog's game... I loved him in Sonic Adventure 2, but hated his game.
I don't think Vergil would outright kill Dante unless he stood to gain a great deal from it. Just like how Vergil was able to stop his attack while under Mundus' control in DMC 1 when he saw the other half of the perfect amulet.

Actually, as an amendment to my previous idea for DMC 5, I have this to alter. On his way out of hell, Dante encounters Vergil. The two fight (because Vergil is a perfect boss character) and Dante convinces Vergil to help him at least this one time. The two escape from hell thanks to Nero having opened a portal for them. Nero returns Yamato to Vergil, his inner demon having been fully awakened when he opened the gateway to hell. Dante, Vergil, Nero, Trish and Lady all go up against the big bad, let's say Mundus' father. Hell, let's say it the devil himself. So a giant fallen angel being brought down by all the heroes of the DMC universe. That would be a fitting end to the DMC series, if they were to end it.
You know, I was reading the DMC3 manga, and it gave that big Sparda spiel, and I think a DMC5 should include Sparda returning. It never said he was dead, only that he disappeared for 2000 years, and impregnated Dante and Vergil's mum. There is something to be picked at there. Maybe he turned human after using all of his power to seal the Gate? Or maybe comes back as the Demon King (or Demon King comes back, for it said Sparda even defeated him.) And just something along those lines.

EDIT: I stand corrected: The book then says, soon on, that he gave up his powers to live as a mortal and he settled down with a woman and died as a normal man. I now feel quite dumb lol.

I've said before that if they can make a good "coming of age" story of how Dante goes from the "emo-ish" look in the tralier to into more of the bad-ass we already know and love then I would probably enjoy it quite a bit.

This new "Dante" and "Dmc" is a totally different game and in fact a Devil May Cry rip off by a team of morons who brought us Heavenly Fail. I mean Sword. I won't accept of this.

But there not this is a reboot it has NOTHING to do with the series. All this game represents is capcom screwing the fans in favor of more western sales thats it. Thats why it was made.

The thing that puzzle me is that he has dark hair. If his Demon power doesn't change his hair to white it either means both Dante and Virgil changed to matching colors. Something that's just wrong. Seeing as they kinda like to try to kill each other.

Also Virgil actually should be a friend in this game because he did say at the end of DMC3 that they did things together. Like their Double Jackpot skill with the guns.

Why is he smoking? I doubt he'd quit because it's unhealthy, as he's a Demon.

Ninja Theory better do things good. I also don't want to see this turn into a God of War knock off.

At the moment I don't like the look of him and if the gameplay doesn't look like DMC standards I'll be disappointed. I really hope it will come for PC as well. Or are they just gonna be lazy about it? :/

According to Capcom, this game is canon with the rest of the series.

Next thing I know, they'll give Mario a make over, cause... the franchise so needs a reboot.
Dante became iconic and to redesign him so drastically is plain wrong in even market and advertisment logic. Not to mention missing a nice opportunity with cross-game promotion with Marvel vs. Capcom 3 (which celebrates DMC's classic look)

I actually wrote an open letter to Ninja Theory and Capcom to voice my consumer opinion.
Link, if you're interested. [http://shirokurou.blogspot.com/2010/09/open-letter-to-ninja-theory-and-capcom.html]

I'll buy this reboot only if it'll get 9/10 or 10/10s. Otherwise, I'll save my money.

I do admit, I loathe the new look.

But that's simply because it's unfamiliar, yet is still a character I know well.

I hate the look of it, but I'll be damned if I'm not gonna play it when it comes out. xD

I can predict the future. NO really I can. I think in my dream, Vergil was a guy that is secretly in love with Dante, and he wants to make out with him. So in order to confirm Dante is gay he sent a legion of sexy-shaped live sex toys to rape and suck this "Dante" off. Disgusted by huge amount of nice tits, he summons a DICKWAD! a legendairy swo..or spear...or prototype whip ripoff..or hammer i don't know? Dickwad is his mother's legacy. She used to battle giant rats when "Dante" was striving to become a silver haired, pun joke maker, kickass. But his mom died to AIDS, 'cus it is new and cool to die from AIDS. And so "Dante" said fck it! Imma wear English flag and get shit on my shitty outfit. Doubling the same amount of one stuff is more cool then having one thing only!So he ended up in this robotic infested, factory city that looks like the base of Nod army from C&C. Anyway. Opening sequence we see "Dante" whoring for some crack money, when his daily rounds get stopped by demonic doll girls screaming "Nevarrrr!" They tell him they want to suck his penis. Appalled by this information, even tho he is younger, he stabs himself with DICKWAD, and unleaches superawesome Degeneric Trigger that make his eyes red or yellow! So in order to defend his gayness he obliterates sex-craving demonesses.Vergil, a local pimp leader, is thrilled by this,'cus his dark plans got to reveal he, in fact, can has sex with "Dante"
So, in order to satisfy his BDSM side, Vergil unleashes hoards of sex-depraved toys, and watches "Dante" kill them all, while the latter one jacks off. He then reaches Virgil. Virgil lets "Dante" stab him in the chest and Virgil gets DT too. Then they kiss all over the place, animated saliva leaking everywhere,reach-arounds, and then they both reach CUlMination, and there is rainbow, and behind them unicorns and pink rabbits jump.Mission is over. End credits "Everybody dance now!"
Game will be praised by masses ~13y.o boys and girls that fap to twilight.Even more so the Ninja theory will make a sequel of this reboot,As Vergil takes his love a step further by minimizing himself, to enter "Dante's" intestines trough anus,so he can lick him all over <3
[the whole game will be homage to levels that took place inside some living thing, while still retaining the edge of modern pop culture and everything that is cool and should set example for new generations].
PS. I have savored all my sarcasm. It is unleashed.

Maybe they'll reveal that this is actually a prequel to the original DMC Saga, hence the young, black-haired Dante.

Glad to see somone saying how terrible this is withreal answers but... oh wait first off very intelligent letter was a good read hope somone reads it and raelly thinks about it. but if your on my side about the no need of the reboot. Why are you going to buy it? even if its a good game if you buy it your supporting the reboot you are adding to the sales figures capcom wants from this game. Am hving the same issue to. This is my favorite series i keep thinking buy the collectors edition but never open it (collectors reasons) but if i buy anything am giving them there (western sales figures) wich is the main reason they added the changes. So am thinking i will not buy this. i hope it crashes and burns. I wanted to see nero and dante hang.

Theres one thign this reboot did for me. It made me relize i didnt apperciate nero enough i always complained saying the new one will suck it will only ne nero but now.... Neros great i guess you only really know how amazing somthing is until its gone.... I'll miss you dante and nero. I'll miss you devil may cry. heres hoping Capcom makes another devil may cry internally.

Lol saw a guy on a forum post this and this is the one thing that could save this god forsaken game.

What if. . . . this ?Dante? thinks he?s Dante?
Like hes heard the legend or something as a child and developed some mental issues where he starts believing that he?s Dante? So, maybe he?s been causing some sort of havoc, which is distressing the cops, and theyve chained him up and everything and then ask him what his name is. Then the shocking part ?Im Dante?

I always leave the possibility that by some miracle the game will be good. And by some hellish power the reboot works... In that case I'll have to at least rent it to see for myself.

But that's really unlikely. So boycott all the way so far.
