oh and as to the original post, see the muscles kid? see the rippling back on my avatar? thats me. I used to be a fat kid. now I'm the big muscley guy that gets checked out all the time. and I can bench press 410. FTW. I encourage you, solidley, start working out.
I don't need the gym as such, being a skinny fuck, but I would like a bit more bulk. However, I lack the motivation that many people here seem to have.
I prefer to get my exercise from walking, cycling, manual work etc. rather than going to the gym specifically to exercise. That seems like a thing I can never do. I went to the gym for a while but quit when I realised it was boring and I was never going to end up as a muscle bound hunk.
I'll be able to get a bit more bulky perhaps, but I'll have to do it whilst actively doing something else, like a sport or martial art or something, rather than just working out.
The answer is simple: Do something you think is fun. Fun brings motivation, motivation brings routine, routine brings results.
F.ex. I started kickboxing. Because it's fun, and sometimes therapeutic.
I also started dancing, because I friggin' love it. I'm not particularly good at it, but that's not the main goal.
Keep an eye out for things you like doing. Any kind of hobby that involves moving around. And if you'd rather "work out" instead of practise a sport, remember that you don't need to taste blood in your throat every time you work out in order to have a good physique. It's perfectly alright to take 2-3 half-an-hour walks a week with your iPod, in fact it's much better for you and your body if you start slow.
Keep the routine up and you'll find that you sleep better/deeper, your appetite is bigger, and you're able to concentrate better. Magic.
My motivation used to be getting into shape to improve my self esteem and to finally get into shape. Now, my motivation is to get into better shape and to work out simply for the sake of working out. If you exercise for long enough, it takes more work to get yourself to not work out than it takes to get up and do it.
After you fall into a rhythm, it really doesn't bother you anymore. Just force yourself to go for a week straight, and after a while, it will just become part of your average everyday schedule.
This is correct. I think it varies how long it takes for most people to fall into a routine, but 1-3 weeks is probably about right. You also kind of have to ease into it, if you try and start a workout plan that's too hard then you won't bother to keep doing it.
If only it did xD
But on topic : I just hate how fat looks. I don't want to be the hulk or anything, I keep myself in the not buff, but not fat category. And I usually don't have to do too much to achieve that.

yes in highschool, sport is first grade was a must so i chose GYM
dude benching your own weight is awesome, keep pressing forward if it is your goal, and bask in the glory if it is'nt.

This is also correct, but don't be too easily fooled by what is "too hard". If you lift weights for the first time, you're going to be sore as hell the next morning. Keep at it though, and eventually you will stop getting sore.
Please note: Not correcting you, just adding a bit more advice to whoever wants it.
Once you're there and start your workout you seem to build up your motivation much easier and quicker. I know that I would sometimes not want to go to wrestling practice after school, but once I was there I was feeling great and motivated.
Another thing you can and maybe should do is convince a friend to come with you. That'll keep you from being bored all alone and will also provide someone to spot you on those really hard sets. Your friend can also be a source of motivation if he/she is motivated already, since you'll be getting someone else to ride your ass about going to the gym.
So how do you do it? Do you motivate yourself with crap you cannot have? Like a smokin hot chick or something? Inner peace? World Peace?
Before it is suggested - Working out on my own, as in at my house, or running around the neighborhood is just plain old NOT an option. i just won't do it.
WHAT do you do!!!? I NEED to know!!! Please help. Save me from heart disease and awkward sex with fellow Fatty McFatFats.
If you're looking at things you won't do all the time then of course you're going to fail.
Look for a proper sport you can do or would like to do. I can't go to the gym just for the sake of it, I have to do something fun.
I ride mountain bikes and swim, they keep me fit and out of the gym most of the time. On the bike I meet people and make friends as well as pounding around and in the pool I beat the crap out of myself but enjoy it.
There's more than one way to fight off beer bellies.
At the beginning, the pain. It just feels good to know I've done something. (It's not so good after a month or two of pain, cause it's usually a sign that you overdo it)
Later it's the endorphine my body kicks out in buckets while I work out.
I think it feels good, it's good to go work out. Gives me a feeling of satisfaction. Also when I go running I zone out so I just plan what I'm going to do that day while I'm running, good way to keep a clear head.
Oh and I'm training for the Parachute regiment. I should probably have mentioned that first...
Crippling self-hatred, mostly.
I don't do it often, though. I keep overdoing it and injuring myself.
Irritatingly enough, I never seem to get slimmer. My muscles triple in size, but all the fat stays right where it is.
Daily sit-ups end up making me look fatter. It's really fucking annoying.
just find something you love to do. Like me, I can't run like at all. I hate it and all my energy is drained within minutes. So for cardio, I bike instead, where those minutes I last becomes hours. For strength training, I rock climb. It works just about every muscle in your body and is loads of fun. Plus being high up gets the adrenaline pumping better then any game could
I'm personally just a competitive person, hence the reason why I play online AND work out. I wanna look better than my friends, even though I work out with most of them. What you should do is be competitive, try and use the motivation that drives you to play UFC, and win I presume, to make you work out (if that makes any sense haha, sounded so much clearer in my head). Another option is to try and encourage friends to work out with you, that way you can't be lazy. Lets face it though: to be playing a game such as UFC, you have to have a certain level of determination. Just try and use it else where. And, like other people have said, once you start you kind of get into a routine which is hard to break. Good luck man!
My motivation is seeing some of the results. Trust me, stick with it and in two/three weeks' time, you'd start sleeping better and generally just feel better about yourself. I know it did for me. Granted, you're going to hit a plateau somewhere along the line, but hey, at least you feel better than before you started.
Oh, and at home, I just use my one 14-lb dumbbell and do some curls or some exercises for the shoulders, and/or push ups, and some crunches. I actually did 100 reps of push ups everyday in my senior year in highschool. Then I kind of did not do it once I got in college, what with the all nighters, the projects and exams in between.
EDIT:
Shameless plug 2 (this will play out like a shady ad that would otherwise be blocked by ABP):
