This one is hard for me, I have a favorite five but not in any particular order:

1.) Merrill from DA2 - the semi-Irish accent matched with a bit of light hearted childishness all wrapped up in a decent mage makes for a fun character. I'm still working through DA2 but I already like her a bit more than Isabela (although Isabela's outfit... grrrrrlllll)

2.) Korgan from Baldur's Gate 2 and ToB - Ok, I have to say that violence is funny, violent people are funny and dwarves are funny; put it all together and you get Korgan. He's my insurance that I don't romance that little crybaby Aerie, in addition he's a decent fighter and he puts everyone in the party on edge. There's even a dialogue where he gets into a rage and attacks you and your party, how crazy is that! Yes, he's chaotic evil, but I'd have him no other way.

3.) Sarovok from Baldur's Gate 1, 2, and ToB - I have to admit that I actually liked Sarovok better than Irenicus, don't get me wrong, both villains were awesome. However to me Sarovok was less emotional and even more calculating than Irenicus, think about it: he kills your foster father, sabotages one mine to take over another (filled with slaves), has all of the inhabitants of your childhood home killed and replaced by shapeshifters, killed his own father, business leaders, and political rivals, all in the goal of starting a war just to get an initial slaughter to become a god. Plus, in ToB he makes for an awesome ally!

4.) Liliana from DA:O - A redhead French spy (ok, Orlesian bard, shut up), what's not to like. Sure, she's pious and sometimes gets holy, however she does a good job of not getting preachy. She is the equivalent of the Christian girl who doesn't judge because she's done more naughty stuff than you have (and she's French!).

5.) Canderous Ordo/Mandalore from KOTOR 1 and 2 - I've always had an admiration of the Mandalorians, they seem like the Spartan culture in the Star Wars universe. Ordo shows that even after the big wars are over, in fantasy it just means that you have to jump into the little wars. Plus the Mandalore armor looks awesome and who can deny a guy with a huge gun.

1: Sand from Neverwinter Nights 2
(Fantastic sarcastic comic relief)

2: Khelgar Ironfist from Neverwinter Nights 2
(Funny as hell if you consider what his side quest is)

3: Mordin Solus from Mass Effect 2
(One of the best sources of fun in ME2)

4: Talitha from Mass Effect 1
(Great portrayal of someone barely holding on to their marbles after slaver horrors)

5: Urdnot Wrex from Mass Effect 1 + 2
(Ultimate badass, more so than your own Shepard)

I haven't played any of the Baldur's Gate games or Jade Empire, so I am probably missing out on some characters, but here is my list:

1. HK-47, a character that is in my opinion the most memorable party member of Kotor and has hilarious dialogue.
2. Garrus, my favorite character in the Mass Effect Universe. I try to put Garrus in my party as much as possible, plus he has the "reach."
3. Alistair, best King ever. More seriously now, Alistair is a great party member and has some great lines whenever he talks to Morrigan. I also loved the "swooping" reference in DA2 when I talked to Alistair in my playthrough when he was the king.
4. Urdnot Wrex, very interesting krogan who is trying to restore order to the krogan. Wrex is also a very badass party member to have with you.
5. Jolee Bindo, my favorite of the jedi party members in Kotor, because I find gray jedi to be really interesting. Not only that but the crazy old hermit is pretty funny.

Honorable mention to Varric and Isabella, especially when they are in your party together, because hilarity will ensue. Varric is the best party member of DA2 in my opinion.

5. Sten - Brilliantly written and a killer tank, I just wish he could stop hating everything I decide to do.

4. The Black Whirlwind - Comedy gold and a great guy to have at your side in a rumble.

3. Thane Krios - Not much in the banter department but a compelling character in his personal plot line and pretty handy in battle

2. Anders - In Awakening not DA2, an absolute legend and not to mention a magical powerhouse

1. Urdnot Wrex - Hands down best companion: hilarious, a monster in a fight and even memorable when he wasn't a companion, it took having Grunt along to realise just how awesome Wrex is.

Honorable Mention: Garrus, Bun Master Ho, Legion, Ohgren, Alistair, Morrigan, Kang, Mordin Solus, Tali, Zevrahn, The Guardian

Dishonorable Mention: Liara, Dawn Star, Sky, Grunt, Jenkins from ME (an interwebs joke, really?)

1. Jack. What can I say? She just seems like a really well designed character with a really strong storyline. Also, she calls Commander Shepard a pussy and gets away with it. No another character can claim that.

2. Shale. By far the best DLC character Bioware has ever done, both in gameplay and as a character.

3. Urdnot Wrex. Both sensible and badass. What more could you want?

4. Varric, Thedas' second greatest lover, finest swordsman, soldier of fortune and outrageous liar.

5. I can't decide between Isabella, Merill and Avaline in DA2. All good characters, really.

Honourable mention to Sandal. If I was being more objective I'd probably give all five slots to character from Dragon Age: Origins.

It's not semi-Irish, it's Welsh.

.... I haven't played any other Bioware games besides the Mass Effect games. So I might not be the best authority on these things.
Same here, but I still love the studio for making them. And from what I hear, their other games are just as good. I really need to get into Dragon Age...

But yeah, here's my list
1. Garrus "Impressive" Vakarian, otherwise known as "the Punisher in space".
2. Urdnot Wrex, the dinosaur-man who just doesn't give a crap.
3. Dr. Mordin Solus. Good for a laugh, unusual manner of speech, brilliant old guy... *inhale* ...total badass.
4. Liara T'Soni, my lady. I had a hard time deciding between her and Tali, but she's just. so. cool. And sexy. Sexy is important.
5. Don't know if it really counts, but Commander Shepard, the way I play him. He's ultimately a Paragon (usually winds up doing "the right thing"), but his main characteristic is that, like Wrex, he doesn't give a flying fornication about anything. He accomplishes his noble goals by getting right up in people's faces, and daring them to mess with him.

As such, my Renegade meter is a lot higher than my Paragon one, despite the fact that I saved the Rachni and the Council, blew up the Collector base, etc.

4. Xan - Baldur's Gate. Because who doesn't need a depressed pessimist mage in their party? "We're all doomed."
I thought I was the only one who could even stand Xan, glad to see I'm not alone ^^ Massive shame that he wasn't in Baldur's Gate 2, not even a cameo :-/

My favorite one is probably Viconia. I've always felt that her personality and personal dilemmas are much less clear cut and more interesting than most others'. She's cast out of the Underdark and unable to fit into the surface world, but it's an outsidership that runs much deeper than "the prejudiced humans won't accept her because of what she is". It's a case of returning spite with spite, fueling the fires and confirming people's prejudices. She's so caught up in hating the surface world for rejecting her she doesn't realize that she herself is part of the problem. You want to feel sorry for her because deep down she's got good intentions, but she's acting so bitchy that it's nearly impossible. Few characters make you feel so equal parts sympathy and hate.

I also really liked what they did with Oghren in Awakening. To me, he was one of the few characters where you could really see and understand the way he views the world, without it being stated out loud. Just by knowing what he had gone through in Origins and seeing how he acted you could understand who he was and how he got there. It really impressed me how they managed to take the whole "drunken dwarf" archetype and add some actual depth to it. Not only is there an actual reason as to why he's drunk, but everything he does makes you believe that he's the kind of person who deals with his sorrows by drowning them.

As for characters I like just for being awesome, I'd say Minsc, HK-47, Mordin Solus and Merrill are probably at the top of my list ^^

No particular order

-Legion: I love how much effort was put into his writting in order to make him truly feel alien in his perspective, yet somehow feel sympathic.

-Lelianna: the agnostic/atheist in me was somewhat moved by how true and benevolent she felt about her faith and yet was a passionate and seductive woman.

-HK-47: really need an explanation

-Mordin Solus: Issac Newton has nothing on him

-Commander Shepard (especially in ME2) a lot of lines of his lines are golden and in a way under appreciate

Honorable mention to Merril (haven't finish dragon age 2) managed to make someone so adorable so quietly creepy.

Garrus but only in ME2
