As long as you played them sometime this year, anything goes, here's mine:
1. Bioshock
2. Painkiller
3. Resident Evil 4
4. Time Splitters: Future Perfect
5. Devil May Cry 4
Wait, so you mean played for the first time this year, right? I guess for me it would be:

5. Prince of Persia: Sands of Time
4. Timesplitters 2 (I've played 3 and loved it but I want to finish 2 first)
3. Operation Flashpoint (1)
2. Deus Ex
1. Minecraft! How can you not love it!

4. FarCry 2 - Another surprise after hearing all the negative comments about it. It's now my favourite FPS and I've played it through several times, with different styles of play each time.
Good for you. I love it too, it's better than FC1 and much better than most make it out to be.

After several years of mostly MMO gaming I've been doing a fair bit of catching up.

1. Portal. Aproached with trepidation because surely no game is that good. well it isn't. it's better, and probably the most perfectly crafted game I've ever played.

2. Saints Row 2. GTA the way it used to be, or more precisely GTA the way you remember it even though it probably wasn't. Great fun, shame the PC port is horrible and I needed to buy an xbox controller and wait until I got a severely over-specced pc to play it on.

3. Doom. Other shooters come and go, but Doom will always be king.

4. Return to Castle Wolfenstein. Something like 3 years ago I got stuck on the only stealth level in the damn game and left it gathering dust until, spurred on by having a quick rant about it here, I went back, miraculously cleared it, and went back to gunning down Nazis in best Where Eagles Dare fashion.

5. KOTOR. I think I'll really like this game if I ever get off of bloody Taris...

I'm a glutton for new releases but I'd say Dragon Age: Origins was my favorite that's not from this year. I'm so glad that I got to play it before I buy Dragon Age 2 next year.

I don't know about a top 5; I don't have a great deal of time in which to play games or money with which to buy them, so I tend not to play that many videogames. I'm normally very apathetic towards new game releases, mostly because I like RPGs and there aren't that many that interest me. Most of my gaming time is spent playing D&D, usually.

That being said, I did buy Dragon Age: Origins this year and it's fantastic. I thought I would like it, having previously enjoyed several of BioWare's other games, and I wasn't disappointed. It's one of the best roleplaying games I've played, in that you actually have to roleplay; the moral choices aren't the clear-cut good/evil of most games, and it's not uncommon that something bad will happen whichever choice you make. It's a rare and special game which has you worrying about the ramifications of your decisions even after you stop playing.
