Dear lord these lists are just rage-bate for real metalheads.
SHO IS
Meshuggah
Opeth
Cynic
4. Anything labeled as "prog" (i.e. Dream Theater, Cynic, Opeth, Meshuggah): the lack of nuance and the loss of any real song structure does not make the best band evar.
Prog Metal isnt Br00tal enough for you?
And Prog metal has song structures, so i dont know where your coming from.

Fine fine, ill change my list.

Black Sabbath.
Gorguts.
Metallica.
Death.
Suffocation.

Does that satisfy?

4. Pantera
5. Rage Against the Machine
Was on your list, so you really cant bash me when you put those terribad bands on your list, which dont really experiment unlike the prog metal bands. And it just seems overall your one of those metalheads that cant appreciate alot of expermentation in metal, which Meshuggah and Cynic do.
I guess I should have said "Prog metal lacks coherent song structure, or is simple song structure fucked up by a bunch of wankers and drum fills." You can have tempo changes, amazing drums and great solo work, but when you push beyond gain and go to distortion, you're just trying too hard. I forgot to mention the terribad lyrics. also you can't have over-the-top tempos(22/8) just to CHUGGA yourself out of them. That's cheating. At least when Jazz left song structure in the dust they kept a fucking BEAT.

also at least Pantera kicks ass and Rage is political. I'd take Dimebag and Morello over any prog guitarist because they at least have some taste instead of just doing scale exercises all over the place.
This guy knows what the fuck is up. Respect.

Arrgh, asking me to codify my favorite metal bands but giving me only five slots to work with? Fine, I'll play by the rules (mostly).

  • 1. Nightwish - the only album of theirs I didn't fully enjoy was Angels Fall First (their very first album that most people forget existed), and that was only because Tuomas should never ever try to sing, something he wisely concluded himself.

    2. Stream Of Passion - I have more albums from other symphonic metal groups, but after running into them barely a day goes by where I don't listen to at least 3 tracks from a Stream Of Passion album.

    3. Blind Guardian - They devoted an entire album to songs inspired by the Silmarillion. And Hansi is freaking awesome.

    4. Ayreon - I am a colossal music nerd, and thus progressive metal concept album rock operas are pretty much marketed at people like me and no one else. Rock on Arjen, rock on.

    5. Anything that has Jorn Lande singing - okay so this last one is cheating, as Lande has been in a ton of bands: Ark, Masterplan, Beyond Twilight, Mundanus Imperium, his own Jorn solo albums (all 9 of them!), plus he's contributed to the Tobias Sammet's Avantasia project and the latest Ayreon album.

I really hate that I'm limited to 5(ish), as it feels like I'm doing a disservice to great bands like Amberian Dawn, After Forever, Angtoria, Apocalyptica, Artrosis, Axel Rudi Pell, Cloudscape, Communic, Coronatus, Dark Moor, Demons & Wizards, Delain, Edenbridge, Eden's Curse, Elis, Eyes Of Eden, Freedom Call, Hydrogyn, Kamelot, Katra, Krypteria, Lacrimas Profundere, Lacuna Coil, Lunatica, Midnattsol, Nocturnal Rites, Octavia Sperati, Pain, Passionworks, Rhapsody Of Fire, Ride The Sky, Satyrian, Savatage, Serenity, Silent Force, Sirenia, Sonata Arctica, Symphony X, Tarot, Threshold, Thunderstone, Todesbonden, Tristania, Unsun, Within Temptation, Xandria, etc by not mentioning them (so I did anyways, ha!).

Ok, i understand you dont like prog metal, doesnt mean its simple or crap.

also at least Pantera kicks ass
Lol! Thats a good joke.

Ok thats nice, youd have to also know that Rage isnt metal, and its a pretty meh band.
It's nice to see people who ignore my points and continue their ignorant lives. Makes me glad I'm not one of them.

Almost everything I listen to is metal, so this is easy for me:
1. In Flames (I'll agree that their new stuff isn't their best (although it's still good), but their overall stuff is top notch material)

2. Dark Tranquillity (very close to first place, they haven't changed too much and they haven't changed too little, and with their latest album released recently, I'm in love with them)

3. Children of Bodom (Some of the best guitar/keyboard melodies ever. This band isn't about the vocals, they're about making crunchy riffs and scary melodies)

4. Trivium (standard metal, but their quality win over most bands)

5. Rob Zombie (includes John 5, my favorite guitarist, and I love me some weird-ass metal)

Honorary mentions go to Metallica, Marilyn Manson, Slipknot, Engel, Dragonforce, and Adversary. They deserve acknowledgement too.

(Also, many Lamb of God fans here. Anyone that can recommend an album to a newcomer?)

Also in no particular order:

HammerFall
Blind Guardian
Nightwish
Leaves Eyes
Alice Cooper

Honorable mention to Manowar, even though some of their stuff sucks hardcore, they also have some freaking sweet stuff(Hands of Doom!), and to Sabaton and Dragonforce.

Not really a big metal fan, but the ones I do like are:

Iron Maiden
Black Sabbath
Motorhead
Disturbed
Avenged Sevenfold

in no particular order. It's actually quite convenient that it's a top 5 list and I can only think of 5 metal band that I really like off of the top of my head without entering subgenres, and I've seen enough arguments on this thread to know that that's a no-no.

Iron Maiden
Agalloch
Ensiferum
Eluveitie
Alcest

2-5 could change at a moment's notice but Iron Maiden is forever.

Teh first is easy.

1. Opeth

Teh rest is pretty hard. Teh hard part is to narrow teh list down to five.

2. Anaal Nathrakh
3. Darkest Hour
4. Bring Me teh Horizon
5. Dillinger Escape Plan

Teh Honorable Mentions: Summoning, Blind Guardian, Imperium Dekadenz, Septic Flesh, Shining, Teh Monolith Death Cult, Amon Amarth, Týr, Turmion Kätilöt, Vortech... God, this could go a while.

If you're into metal and you haven't heard of some of these guys, check them out. Plus, I've got a lot of other recommendations if you're into any of teh sub-genres here represented, but perhaps that might best be relayed via PM.

I don't really know what we are classifying metal as, so i'm just going to say Black Sabbath and leave it at that. I would love to mention RATM, Machine Head or Tool but i suspect they are not exactly what we are looking for.
