No particular order...

Blind Guardian
Nightwish
Dragonforce
Rhapsody of Fire
Disturbed

If the list were slightly longer, I'd find room for Hammerfall, Sonata Arctica, and Lordi.

No, Metallica is not that great, only reason everyone knows em for is for the albums made in the 80's, begin of the 90's :/
Just because a band's newer material doesn't measure up to their old stuff doesn't mean that old stuff is retroactively bad.
Everyone to the lifeboats, HERE COMES TEH FLAMES!
...what?

Why are half the bands listed in this thread Nu Metal?
That's not metal. :)
Well, as long as we're being lenient, I'll include a couple of -core bands.

Once again, in no order:
Nasum
Marc A. Pullen
August Burns Red
Crimson Moonlight
Miseration

Ah. My post only included Metallica, and then only in a quote. I've only ever listened to one song by Megadeth ("Sweating Bullets"...which, granted, I like). I thought you were talking about me getting flamed for being the only person on the Escapist willing to admit to liking Dragonforce. Now that would be a flamewar...one that I wouldn't participate in, granted.

Mine aren't exactly your description of metal, more like hardcore-metal/rock.
1. As I Lay Dying
2. All That Remains
3. Alexisonfire
4. Cancer Bats
5. Bring Me The Horizon

What the hell? Everyone is naming these hardcore/deathcore/metalcore/EpicFail, and Cliche bands (Anthrax, Megadeth, Metallica, etc.) that you would expect them to name!
Where's the diverse bands?
OK anyway, my favorite METAL (not emo, screamo, deathcore, hardcore, hard rock) bands are (in no order)

1. Gorod (Gorgasm FRA)
2. Hieronymus Bosch (RUS)
3. Artillery (DEN)
4. Annihilator (CAN)
5. Vintersorg (SWE)

Now THOSE are non-cliche, real metal bands.

Shining
Neurosis
Strapping Young Lad
Electric Wizard (not sure if they count as metal, but I'm struggling for a 5th)
Did you see the Strapping Young Lad easter egg in Fallout 3? Presidential Metro on a computer terminal!

Real men listen to Strapping, it doesn't come much heavier than that.

1) Darkthrone. Fantastic black metal, fantastic death metal (especially their Frostland Tapes). Their earliest demo Land Of Frost is really fucking raw. Fuck Off And Die was an entertaining heavy \ black attack, but Dark Thrones and Black Flags surpassed it.

2) Morbid Angel. Classic death metal. From the almost-thrash approach of Altars of Madness to the guttural Blessed are the Sick (these are the only albums I've heard), they're fantastic. I've heard that Heretic is not as good.

3) Bathory. Some people might say that Under the Sign of the Black Mark was the first proper black metal album. Whether that's true, their journey from thrash \ black, through black and viking, through a rather lacking thrash re-visit, and back to viking, lots of fantastic albums resulted.

4) Venom. Dead from Mayhem said that there would be no Mayhem without Venom. Indeed, Venom were raw as fuck whilst still being metal. Their album Black Metal started with a chainsaw through their studio door, and it all gets better from there. They've continued for so long, and I haven't listened to their recent stuff, but their old stuff is fantastic.

5) Xasthur. Xasthur get a lot of shit for being one of the darlings of the suicidal \ depressive black metal stuff from America, and also for using drum machines on most of the albums. That said, once I picked up Telepathic with the Deceased, and Defective Epiphet, I knew that I was in this depressive cycle for the long haul.

Metallica (Lightning/Master albums still pulse through my head involuntarily)
Judas Priest (Painkiller album. 'nuff said.)
Children of Bodom (Melodic Death/black metal/techno mix is pure awesome)
Dethklok (even though it's a parody, still brutal. Where the hell is that second album?)
Trivium

I noticed a lot of lamb of gods on this list. Did they come out with a new album that totally kicked ass or something? I like listening to them, but i thought the general metal community's view of them was "ooh they're all power chords and dont have any real talent"

Xasthur and Summoning are some of my favorite BM bands. Burzum is up there too. Now that Varg is out, he's said that he's working on a new project.
